This year at Basel World, Rolex updated the purest of their sport watches, the no-date Sub, with a new reference (114060).  This new no-date Sub very much the same as the earlier no-dates, but there are some difference, which we covered at length in  this detailed look at the new Sub here.

But, to really understand what the 114060 Sub is, we thought it would be best to compare it to a no-date Submariner from forty years earlier, a Reference 5512 from 1972 – and that is exacly what you see above.  These watches are exactly the same, except not at all, don’t you think?

Twenty years ago, Richard Habring created the world’s first affordable split-seconds chronograph in the IWC Doppelchronograph.  He did it with a bit of genius engineering that turned the ubiquitons Valjoux 7750 into a very special watch.  But, in the past twenty years, a lot has changed – like for example, Richard Habring left IWC to start Habring² with his wife Maria, and just last month, the 20 year patent on the doppelchronograph that Habring designed for IWC expired.  What does that mean? It means that Richard Habring can make an updated watch of the doppelchronograph under his own name, and that is exactly what you see above.  Click through for a detailed look at the Doppelchronograph and the new Doppel 2.0 – with technical thoughts from Richard Habring himself.

One of our favorite things to do with new watches that are, in theory, connected with the watches of previous generations is put the old and new side-by-side.  You saw it here with the Rolex Explorer II Orange-Hand and here with the Royal Oak Jumbo, and at Basel World, we decided to do it with the excellent new Jack Heuer 80th Birthday Carrera, a watch we showed you in detail here.

You see, Jack Heuer designed his 80th birthday watch himself, and he is also responsible for the conception of the classic Heuer chronos for 40+ years ago, so, we brought along an early 1960s Heuer Carrera (reference 2447N) to see how they look side by side.  Obviously, the biggest difference between the two Carreras is the diameter – roughly a 5mm variance.  But, you can see the hands, hour markers, and shield are very much the same, not to mention the case design.

What is also interesting is just how nice the 1/5 second scale is on both of these watches – placed expertly on the rehaut (the Carrera was the first watch with this trait – traditionally they were placed on the dial itself).  Withh the 60s 2447N you have a nice white contrast against a black dial, and with the 80th birthday watch, a clean grey again a bright silver.

So, comparing a Jack Heuer design of 2012 against a Jack Heuer design of the early 1960s, you see that the man still knows how to make a good chronograph, half a century later.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of its popular Saratoga watch collection, Concord has recently reintroduced the line. The twenty new models from Concord were premiered in the capital city of Doha, Qatar. The Swiss company describes the new Saratoga line as a fusion of past and present, incorporating their traditional designs and elegance with modern fashions.

The new timepieces all include a stainless case, a Swiss quartz movement, and the faces are made of sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment. The main models come in at 9.15 millimeters tall with 40 millimeter diameter cases. The designs are offered in the style of silver or black mosaic grains d’orge guilloche patterned dial. There is also the choice of dark blue or white mother of pearl dial sets. The deployment clasp is also stainless steel to match the case, and each Saratoga is water-resistance to 50 meters (3ATM). The Concord Saratoga traps are generally platinum.

The women’s Saratoga model is similar, but is offered in a white or pink mother of pearl dial setting. Slightly smaller than the men’s model, the women’s models all range in the 31 millimeter diameter range for the watch face, and include the offer of six diamonds set on alternating hour markers, which have a total weight of 0.9 kt.

The Concord Saratoga collection also offers models with an 18k white or rose gold chain and diamond inlay. The reference price for these models is around $ 933,000 for the platinum models and $ 1,023,000 for the white/rose gold models. The Saratoga series includes with each purchase a patented crown protection device, and every timepiece is delivered in handmade wooden boxes with full certificates.

From its introduction in 1986, the Concord Saratoga has been designed to be sporty and trendy. The series is named after the thoroughbred horse racing track in New York called Saratoga Springs, where the elite gather to place bets, often sporting Concord watches. This particular track was selected for its history, as it is the oldest official organized sporting venue in America. Concord is also heavily allied with horse racing in the Middle East, hence the Qatar opening. Through both of these associations, the Concord Saratoga has made a name for itself in horse racing circles as a high-class luxury sports watch. Internationally recognized, the Concord Saratoga series blows away competition due to the high-quality work and traditional design work put into each individual timepiece. The high profile clientele in the Middle East have been very loyal to the Concord brand, as horse racing is a passion among many there.

James Bond with Omega Watch

Daniel Craig as James Bond with an Omega watch

The James Bond film series will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year. To honor the British spy and his escapades, Swiss luxury watch brand Omega is releasing a special edition of its prized Seamaster Diver 300m, a timepiece Agent 007 has worn in the films since GoldenEye.

The newest addition to the Seamaster series will be available in two sizes, 41 mm for men and 36.25 mm for women. There will be a repetitive 007 monogram on the lacquered black dial, and the ceramic outer bezel rings feature the number 50 filled in with red. The rest of the grey outer ring displays the minutes in a 10-minute interval pattern with white enamel. White dots on the inner ring point out hours, and the geometric hands flit across hours and minutes. By contrast, the red seconds arm is thin and quite the opposite of all the shapes on the dial.

Each version of the watch screw-and-pin bracelets and their cases are made of stainless steel, and both watches are also certified chronometers. While the 41 mm watch has 11 applied indexes, the 36.25 mm women’s watch has 10 with a diamond marker at the 7 o’clock position. This special marking signifies the creation of the watch honor Agent 007, and also adds a touch of femininity.

Stamped with a gun-barrel design, the back of the watch continues to reflect the aesthetics of James Bond. The winding rotor is in the shape of a bullet and can be viewed through a sapphire crystal. The watch is water resistant up to 300 meters and showcases Omega’s revolutionary caliber 2507 self-winding, co-axial movement. Released in 1999, this component of Omega’s watches has since driven a revolution in mechanical watchmaking. A particularly advanced feature of the watch, the helium escape valve, should appeal to professional divers, as this is necessary for divers working with diving bells.

Although James Bond is a fictional character, he still represents quite the ambassador to the Omega brand. The James Bond 007 50th Anniversary Collector’s Piece, created in his honor, duly parallels the spy’s timeless sophistication. Take note that only 11,007 of the 41 mm version and 3,007 of the 36.25 mm version will be produced, as these watches are truly a limited edition. Look out for these classic timepieces as well as 23rd film in the James Bond franchise, Skyfall, coming out later this year.
