On July 1, 1941 the Brooklyn Dodgers played the Philadelphia Phillies. This game was televised, but before it began, something was shown that had never been seen before – a televised advertisment for a consumer product. And for what was the world’s first televised advertisement? A watch, of course.
The ad that begat all other ads was for Bulova wristwatches, one of the great American timepiece companies.
The ad is pretty simple by today’s standards, but that’s ok – it only cost Bulova $ 9. Priceless.
If you’re the sort of person who owns a 33.19-carat diamond, do you ever really need to know what time it is? In short, no. But the legendarily late-for-everything Elizabeth Taylor still managed to amass a fine collection of jewelry watches that are a part of the year’s most anticipated auction. The exhibit fills two floors of Christie’s Rockefeller Center headquarters in New York with Taylor’s clothing, accessories, and jewels, including the aforementioned Elizabeth Taylor Diamond, the 50.56 carat La Peregrina Pearl set into a massive pearl, diamond, and ruby necklace by Cartier, and a few hundred carats worth of an emerald-and-diamond Bulgari suite. But if you can tear yourself away from the Taj Mahal heart-shaped diamond, there are 14 fine examples of Taylor’s watches to peruse. The highlights include pieces from both Vacheron Constantin and Patek Philippe, and many more. Though, there were suspiciously no Elgins included in the lot in spite of Taylor’s time as a brand spokeswoman.

The X-Files was awesome. So was Fox Mulder. Wristwatches are also awesome. So what could not be awesome about some guys sitting around for six months, watching every single episode of the X-Files, taking screen captures of anytime Fox Mulder’s watch made an appearance, and throwing it up on the interwebs?
Yup, FoxMuldersWristwatch.com is real, and the video you see above is a compilation of 1,264 screen grabs of Mr. Mulder’s timepieces throughout the series. The gang identified twelve different watches ranging from Casios and Ironmans to an Omega or two and broke down the spots by episode.
Check out what is indubitably the “most comprehensive examination of the watches worn by Fox Mulder on TV’s ‘The X-Files’” we have ever seen by clicking here.
Today marked the selection of three winners of the book Patek Philippe in America Reference Guide: Volume I Men’s Wristwatches by John Reardon. Our winners are Jason, Jimmy Margulies, and Brandon. Congratulations! All were shocked and surprised by their good fortune!
A big thank you to all who entered. For those of you that didn’t win, you should seriously consider purchasing a copy of both of John Reardon’s books, available here. Oh, and a final word of wisdom for our three winners: you never actually own one of John Reardon’s books on Patek Philippe watches. You merely look after it for the next generation.
When it comes to the history of Patek Philippe in the written word, nothing compares to Patek Philippe in America: Marketing the World’s Foremost Watch by John Reardon, a contributor to HODINKEE and Senior Vice President of Sotheby’s New York. Ben Clymer reviewed it here (and we hear that nearly all 1500 copies are sold). In the process of writing the history of Patek Philippe’s marketing efforts in the US, John realized that there was a tangible need for a pictorial reference guide to Patek Philippe watches.
John created the Patek Philippe in America Reference Guide: Volume I Men’s Wristwatches, which covers the men’s wristwatch references made between the 1930s and 1990s. The book also includes a significant selection of pocket watches made by Patek during the 20th century. Remarkably, all 1000+ depictions in the book are from original ads, archive images, or promotional material with no pictures from any auction houses or other outside sellers. The book has already settled disputes over the originality of some characteristics on certain Patek Philippe references and is unique in the world of horological literature as several of the most cited reference books are littered with fakes and redials.
Needless to say, this is an important contribution to the scholarship of Patek Philippe wristwatches. It deserves a place on the shelf of every serious Patek collector. It is the comprehensive guide nonpareil to men’s 20th century Patek Philippe watches.
If you are interested in purchasing a copy of this reference guide, it is $ 295 and available here. John Reardon is currently working on Volume 2, which will be a reference guide for women’s Patek Philippe watches.

Patek Philippe Question&Answer: Question by miyuki & kyojin: Which mechanical wristwatches run longest?
My Cartier “Tank LC” runs 45 hours, if I fully wind it. That’s fairly typical, but there has been one upsmanship to see who can make the longest-running model. Patek Philippe’s “5100′ took the lead in 2000 by running 240 hours=10 days. In 2003, Patek added the $ 240,000 “5101″ tourbillon to its line. It also runs 10 days. Do these two models still hold the record for power reserve? Serious answers only, please!
