In an annual study put out by Millward Brown Optimor, the privately held, Geneva-based watchmaker Rolex rose in brand value by over 36% to become the third most valuable brand in the world, behind only Louis Vuitton and Hermes.  Who topped Rolex isn’t as newsworthy as who Rolex topped in the list – and that includes not only other massive luxury brands like Gucci, Chanel, and Prada, but even famed jeweler and competing watchmaking Cartier.  Rolex is the only pure watchmaker in the top ten of the BrandZ list, and its strength is credited to “brand contribution,” or ways the brand differentiates itself from its competitors providing last value.

The entire BrandZ report from Millward Brow Optimor can be found here.  It’s worth a perusal.

Bremont makes some really tough, very werable, everyday pieces.  The watches are incredibly well built, and as Ben told you in the FT a few months back, all of them will soon be built in a state of the art Bremont facility not in the Vallee de Joux, but in the United Kingdom.  See how the dial above says “London” at 6 o’clock and not “Swiss Made?”

At Basel World this year, we got a chance to preview what could be a really hot seller for Bremont, the ALT1-WT World Timer.

That Budapest – one of the most beautiful cities in the world has developed where it is, is not down to some historical accident. Take a look at Gellért Hill, right next to the River Danube as it flows majestically through the centre of the modern city. It was precisely the combination of the relative ease of crossing the River here and the natural protection the hill offered against invasion that decided the earliest settlers it was the ideal place to build a town. The Eravisci, a tribe of highly cultured Celts, had already settled at Gellért Hill in the third and fourth centuries BC They worked with iron, decorated their earthenware pots and even minted their own coins. Later, the Romans built a settlement at todays Óbuda. They called it Aquincum and it was an important station along the limes which ran alongside the River Danube.

The opening for the 2000 Walt Disney movie The Emperor’s New Groove. Music: David Hartely- Perfect world. Lyrics: There are despots and dictators Political manipulators There are blue bloods with the intellects of fleas There are kings and petty tyrants Who are so lacking in refinements They’d be better suited swinging from the trees He was born and raised to rule No one has ever been this cool In a thousand years of aristocracy An enigma and a mystery In Meso American History The quintessence of perfection that is he He’s the sovereign lord of the nation He’s the hippest dude in creation He’s a hep cat in the emperor’s new clothes Years of such selective breeding Generations have been leading To this miracle of life that we all know What’s his name? Kuzco, Kuzco, Kuzco… He’s the sovereign lord of the nation He’s the hippest cat in creation He’s the alpha, the omega, a to z And this perfect world will spin Around his every little whim ‘Cause this perfect world begins and ends with him What’s his name? Kuzco, Kuzco, Kuzco…

The space is not the final frontier for Omega Watches: over fifty years ago astronaut Wally Schirra wore his Omega Speedmaster in orbit on his space mission. To commemorate the half-century anniversary of Omega’s first launch into space, the illustrious watch brand is realizing their Omega Speedmaster “FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE” Chronograph Watch.

Omega watches are one of the very few timepieces that have been worn in space. In order to pass the tests required by NASA, each watch had to be carefully inspected and put through numerous tests to certify that the watches would maintain their accuracy in orbit.

This accuracy was crucial to astronauts in early space travel because much of the calculations were figured by humans and not by their instruments (unfortunately, there were no iPhone apps for astronauts), so every second counted in the calculations.

This was particularly crucial in missions in space, such as the Apollo 13 mission where the crew had to rapidly recalculate and improvise on their protocols to land before running out oxygen.  Lucky for them, Omega watches were there to keep their calculations on track.

Omega watches, of course, were up to par and from March 1965 onward, the Omegas were officially out of this world and in NASA’s missions.  Wally Schirra was the first to test Omega’s qualities in space in 1962 on the Mercury Atlas 8 mission, but even Buzz Aldrin wore an Omega during his historic walk on the moon.

The commemorative Speedmaster today takes all the worthy qualities of the original.  With a manual-winding caliber 1861, chronometric and tachymetric functions, and a 48 hour power reserve, the watch is incredibly accurate.  Water resistant to 50 meters/167 feet and accurate hundreds of miles above the sea level, the Speedmaster is incredibly durable.  With a polished black bezel and dial, complemented by a soft brown leather band, the watch isn’t hard on the eyes, either.

A few details that the new release includes that you won’t find on the originals include detail work on the back of the watch case with Omega’s original Seahorse and “The First Omega in Space, October 3, 1962) etched into the stainless steel.  October 3 refers to the Mercury Atlas 8 mission—the very first day an Omega left the earth.

The Omega Speedmaster “FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE” Chronograph Watch is more than just a timepiece, but also a part of the mosaic of American and world history. Omega’s dedication and talent provided many astronauts the backup they required during their dangerous, yet wondrous missions.  Today, it remains just as accurate, and just as integral to man’s dream of landing among the stars.

Yesterday we showed you what could be one the most important collections of modern watches (20th century – now) in those of Henry Graves Jr and his grandson Pete Fullerton, which will be available via Sotheby’s this June.  Today we are showing you what could be one of the greatest finds in pre-modern watches.  If you think now is a good time to be building a world-class collection, you’d be right, because what Christie’s Geneva has in its May sale is from another world.

Abraham-Louis Breguet is certainly the godfather of modern watchmaking.  The lists of firsts to his name is staggering, and it was he who is credited for constructing the very first wristwatch for Caroline Murat, queen of Naples, in 1810.  But on the technical front, Breguet is likely best known for the invention of the tourbillon.  What isn’t as widely known, is that Breguet also created the very first watch with two distinct movements, creating a type of “resonance”.  Now a certain watchmaker today by the name of Francois-Paul Journe makes a watch called Resonance, which we’ve explained here, and indeed the principles are the same.  But, Breguet made these resonance pocketwatches in the early 1800s, and he did so for only two people – King George IV (1762-1830) of Great Britain and Ireland, and Louis XVIII (1755-1824), King of France.  Or so we thought.
