I was thinking it was about time that I reviewed a Wolf Designs winder. I think the Wolf Designs winders are some of the best bang for buck winders out there and I know several people that have them. They are affordable, well-made, look great, and have good response and customer service from what I’ve heard. Their pricepoint makes them easily affordable and much better than the plastic stuff that is out there.

The Module 2.5 Single is a basic model with no cover to protect from dust. This is important to some people, and less important to others. The outside of the winder is a leatherette, with the inside portions made from “silk fabric”. While it doesn’t feel like silk to me, it is nice to the touch. The winder has a single control on the front allowing you to switch between A (Clockwise), B (Counter-Clockwise) & C (Bi-Directional). The winder is pre-set to 900 TPD, which is just the right amount for most single directional winding movements such as the Valjoux 7750.

There is also a green light on the metal front control. From Wolf Designs Website: “A green light indicates normal winder operation. A red light indicates either low battery power or that the drum is incorrectly turning.” The winder is interesting in that it runs through a cycle of charging up the mainspring, and then into a sleep cycle for 18 hours to allow the mainspring to unwind and discharge stored up energy, which is supposedly better for you watch. Operation is almost completely silent, but with the 18 hour sleep cycle, you can time it to be sleeping when you are!

The cuff locked in and can hold a watch with a strap size of up to 10″! That’s definately most people out there. The cuff compresses via a spring inside. When pushed in, the cuff clicks into place and holds the watch firmly. I have heard of some people having problems with the cuffs not staying in after a while with heavier watches, but that the Wolf Designs customer service fixed the problems quickly and easily when it happened.

There’s the butt-shot! As you can see, a compartment for D-Cell batteries as well as a jack for the AC Adapter. They recommend Lithium batteries as they last twice as long as Alkaline. The watch runs great with the AC Adapter and that’s what I use, however, with Batteries the winder can be put inside a safe as well and kept running, also a nice feature.

Overall its a good bang for buck winder with better-than-basic features and superior build quality. The interior structure of the winder is wood-framed, and the electronics do use fairly sohpisticated timing systems compared to basic winders. Wolf Designs sells these for $ 195 at regular price and occasionally a deal can be had.

Wolf Design Viceroy 6 Winder 9 Wolf Designs Viceroy 6 Piece Watch Winder Review

An interesting fact that I’ve come to learn is that many people (even quite a few watch loving people) have no idea what a watch winder is. It is one of those things that you can show people, in action, and they still don’t know what it is. I’ve actually had people come to my office and see a bunch of watches in winders on shelves and remark “oh really? You have to show them off like that?” Which I later learned (after some probing) was a misunderstanding thinking that a watch on a winder was some special way of displaying them in a fancy manner. I just can’t anticipate misunderstandings like that in advance.

It is possible that I take for granted knowing what a mechanical watch is, and that I know how it works. There isn’t a lot of sense required (in my opinion) to understand that a little weight in a watch movement winds it when you move your wrist around. Further, if you are not wearing the watch on your wrist, you can artificially create the movement necessary to keep that watch wound. I know, very simple stuff here but I have encountered plenty of people who simply aren’t familiar enough with automatic mechanical watches to know all this. The point is that the pool of people on this planet who know what an automatic mechanical watch is, is not super big. Among those people, the ones that know what a watch winder is, is even smaller. Therefore, I guess I have to keep telling people about watch winders, and why they might want one.

Reviewed today is a winder that has the capacity to keep six automatic watches running. I have reviewed winders in the past from such venerable brands such as Orbita and SwissKubik, and today I review one from Wolf Designs. Wolf Designs has a history in making watch and jewelry boxes which later included watch winders. Wolf Designs is continually improving their products and offering a range of relatively affordable and functional watch winders (among other things). Today I review their Viceroy 6 Piece Watch Winder. Plus, look below for a generous discount offer on any Wolf Designs watch winder for aBlogtoRead.com readers.

The Viceroy is part of their nicer collection of winders and comes in models that wind from one to eight watches. They are housed in padded black boxes that have a closing, clear acrylic front. According to Wolf Designs the boxes are put together by hand, and have a wooden frame. All it needs is a handle on the top and you could tote it around like a suitcase. The dimensions of the 6 Watch Winder units are 16.5”w x 6.25”d x 12.75”h.

I like that the front portion opens and closes to protect from dust, but that you can also see the watches when the cover is closed. However, you’ll need to have the cover closed most of the time or it just lays flat and sticks out rather far. The unit is weighty enough, but you’ll still need to put a hand on it to secure it while pulling out the “cuffs” that hold the watches in place.

While the door of the winder box technically does lock, it is a very simple lock and not one that I would recommend for real security purposes. It is just sort of them to prevent it from accidentally opening and the most easily deterred thieves. The lock does however use a small key that Wold Designs provides.

This unit is powered via an AC adapter – which plugs in via a removable cord in the back of the unit. There is an ongoing debate among watch winder makes as to whether long-life batteries or plug-in units are the best way to go. Some units even offer both. Space and convenience permitting I tend to feel more comfortable with the plugged-in units.

With space to keep six watches wound, this Viceroy unit contains six different winding module mechanisms. They are the Wolf Designs module 2.7, and are their most advanced modules today. They are also easy to use and understand. I also want to add that they offer functionality you probably won’t use, but still appreciate is there.

Looking at the control panel you’ll see two knobs, two buttons, and a backlit LCD display. The left knob is for indicating the direction of the winding. You can choose, clockwise, counterclockwise, or both directions. The other knobs is to turn the module on or off (you don’t need to have all of them running at the same time) or to activate time delayed winding. The buttons around the screen are to select either the number of rotations per day, or to indicate the time delay until it starts winding.

In my experience a winder really only needs to turn in the right direction (I usually just have it turn in both to be safe), and to rotate enough times. The majority of modern automatic watches simply cannot be over-wound. Some super discriminating watch collectors like to play with this function for a variety of “enthusiast” reasons that I won’t get into, but for most people the basic settings are enough. If you don’t want to investigate and learn how many rotations per a day your watch needs to stay wound, 900 is a good amount.

I actually like the module 2.7 for its ease of use and intuitive operation. One suggestion I would make is that there is a memory function. This means that when you turn the unit off, it recalls what the last setting was. By default when turned on, it will automatically go to 600 turns per day. Not a huge issue though. Technically I believe that Wolf Designs recommends you turn off the module when placing and removing a watch cuff, but I don’t think it will hurt too much not too.

The winder drum is pretty silent (especially with the cover closed), and seems to run smoothly. I really don’t have complaints about the unit when it is operating. The large cuff unit comes out with a snap and clicks back into place with ease. With a springy back, it is meant to collapse to handle large to small watches. I found that it was able to accommodate most, but not all watches. Women especially might find it a bit tough to put their watches on this unit. For whatever reason winders tend to be mostly made for larger sized bracelets. An interesting feature that I like about the module 2.7 is that if there is a problem with the mechanism or something is stuck or not inserted properly, the little red light will blink. Otherwise the green light will blink (slowly, but it does blink all the time).

Back when I started out my collection of automatic watches I wanted them to be all wound – all the time. I didn’t have a winder, so I just sat there hand-winding them constantly. It was a pain. After getting my first watch winders I vowed to never go back to that. These days I have watches in winders, and watches just laying around. Nevertheless, I find that I almost always go to the ones in the winder first. Something about them feeling fresh and wound, and running that makes them a default choice for the day. The benefits of a watch winder are clear, but it can be a daunting purchase to a new collector. Though you won’t regret getting one. The Wolf Designs Viceroy 6 Watch Winder is a fair deal at $ 1,799. It looks attractive, is relatively affordable, and serves up to 6 watches without whining. If you are relatively new to the watch collecting world and have only recently felt the warm embrace of this specific addiction then the concept of a special jewellery box that coddles and gently rotates your watches in your absence may seem odd or even unnecessary. To the contrary, the idea of a watch winder is actually both simple and practical, much like a garage for a exotic car, a watch winder provides the best care possible for your watches and ensures they are ready for you to enjoy. Wolf Designs is one of the most respected watch winder manufactures in the business with nearly 180 years worth of experience making watch winders and designing their modules to meet the needs of hobbyists, collectors and aficionados alike. Naturally, we jumped at the chance to spend a couple of weeks using a Wolf Designs Roadster Triple with our humble (and ever changing) collection of watches. The Triple, as the name suggests, allows you to simultaneously wind three watches while still providing room for the storage of an additional six timepieces. The Roadster Triple sits roughly in the middle of Wolf Designs winder line up which ranges from single watch winders to the eight winder Viceroy or the modular 4.1 series of winders.

  • Wood frame (17.75″w x 7.75″d x 8.75″h)
  • Black pebble leather
  • Glass panelled door
  • Macassar wood veneer faceplate
  • Chrome control plate with backlit lcd panel
  • Rotating drum design (71mm deep – 77 mm wide)
  • Cuff design accommodates up to a 10+ inch wrist
  • Space for additional watches in top level
  • Available 300-1200 rotations per day
  • Clockwise, counter-clockwise, or bi-directional
  • Removable travel compartment
  • AC or battery power

The Roadster series from Wolf Designs lies somewhere on the crossroads between a fine jewellery box and a beautiful guitar amp. The subtle texture of the leather on its wooden frame is in stark contrast to the polished chrome fittings and the beautifully patterned effect of the macassar wood faceplate which adorns the winding area. The winder consists of three 77 mm wide drums that are effectively barrel shaped and about the size of a small coffee mug. The entire drum is connected to a magnetically shielded motor so whatever is secured to its edges will rotate with the edge of the drum. The cuff is essentially a fitted cushion that locks its self and your watch to the rotating outer edge of the barrel (see video). Once your watch is fitted in place you can set up a specialized winding program selecting clockwise, counter-clockwise or bidirectional rotations as well as the delay (for watches that are already fully wound) and number of rotations in a given 24 hour period. the knob on the left of the control designates the direction of the rotations while the right knob controls the power (on/off) to each winding cell or can be set to delay the start of the winding sequence. The number of rotations can be changed using the small (+) and (-) buttons next to the backlit screen. With the exception of using the start delay, I always chose bi-directional rotations and let the winder do the rest. It is really quite endearing to watch the Roadster Triple as it slowly rotates your watches behind its glass display panel, it is like having an aquarium for your watches. I imagine the effect is magnified depending on the number of watches winding at once but watching three at once is really mesmerizing.

The Roadster Triple operates almost silently thanks to its nylon gears. When the lid and front panel are closed there is no audible way to tell it is running, the watches rotate silently and you would have to place your ear against the winder to hear any noise from the motors. This is a fairly crucial point, if the winder were to make any considerable or noticeable amount of noise while operating it would be too annoying to have on a desk or in a quiet study and that is generally where an item like the Roadster Triple would make the most sense. A careful inspection of the Roadster shows a considerable level of attention to detail and training was used in its design. The winding cells are large enough to accommodate modern sized watches (no trouble at all with the Halios Laguna) and the drums are even deep enough to suit a watch fitted for a large wrist (10+ inches).

The Roadster series relies on Wolf Design’s Module 2.7 which allows for a start delay so if you were just wearing your watch it can expend some of its stored energy before being wound again. The Roadster Triple can be operated via battery for up to six months if you need to house it in a location that does not have access to a power receptacle where it could be connected via the included power adapter. The Module 2.7 also features rotation programming that further prevents over-winding of the timepiece by using rotation cycles and, once these cycles are complete, the module will rest the watch for 18 hours which allows the watch to run under its own power reserve. Lastly, these Module 2.7 winders also feature lock-in cuffs that can hold overly heavy or thick watches.

So how well does it actually work? I tested eight different watches in the Roadster, and found it to work with any bracelet or strap I had and it seemed to function perfectly regardless of the size or weight of the watch (36mm vintage compared to the Halios Laguna on its steel bracelet). The convenience factor is excellent as well as I routinely kept the Halios Laguna, a Tag Heuer Aquaracer and a Seiko SKX007 on the Roadster Triple and it essentially meant I could choose from any of the three at any point in the day and not have to worry about resetting the watch. The Tag Heuer really took to the programming, running +1 second per week if kept on the winder vs. +2 seconds per day when left on my desk over night. A properly regulated watch should keep its best time on your wrist, so this accuracy is more impressive than surprising. If you like to change between a few watches depending on your outfit or activity, this is a good way to avoid the process of the watch expending its power reserve and needing to be reset and wound.

Generic watch winders are widely available online but unfortunately, just like watches, they are not all made to the same standards. The conventional $ 50 winder from eBay will certainly wind your watch but may lead to over winding and possibly magnetization of the movement causing the watch to become inaccurate. Additionally, a brief search on eBay shows that most of the bargain watch winder options are also fairly ugly and rather cheap looking, not really the kind of place you will want to keep the Rolex you saved for or the vintage Omega you inherited. Wolf Winders has taken decades to develop and perfect its craft and the Roadster Triple is a great example of their endeavour. The Roadster Triple is simple to use, features reliable and well designed technology and is a beautiful way to show off your collection while keeping your watches primed for use. The Roadster Triple is sold directly through Wolf Designs and carries a price tag of $ 1099 USD. While we admit that is quite a lot of money, Wolf Designs has many winders to choose from in a wide range of prices. To make a new Wolf Designs winder even more appealing, they have offered WatchReport.com readers a 50% off promocode for any purchase over $ 200 so if you find one that is just right be sure to use the promo code “WD50WR” at checkout any time in the next two weeks.

We would like to thank Wolf Designs for the sample winder and the generous promocode.

Question by Wolfgirl94

I’ve had a few dreams recently that involved me going to the International Wolf Center in Ely, MN. One dream I had: I was with students from gradeschool at the IWC, two wolves were in an open glass enclosure inside the building. At first, I thought they were Shadow and Maya, the dominant pair. The wolves came up to the glass and allowed me to pet them. I left with my group to see somethin else, then returned to find Aidan and Denali, the pups in the enclosure.

Dream 2: I went to the IWC with the zoo crew. Outside, there was an enclosure with one wolf. This wolf looked like Matsi and Wyakin (Living with Wolves) combined. The sign said the wolfs name was Maya. The wolf came to me and allowed my to pet it, and followed me as I went inside.

Dream 3: Went to IWC with zoo crew again. I saw the center as it is, mostly. I felt like I knew my way around, and began to look for the wolves. Suddenly it changed as my dad and I entered a room. A free-roaming wolf was there, so was a big cat. My dad was hanging on a cliff as the cat or bear (can’t remember which one) came at him. The wolf went after the cat/ bear as a keeper and I helped my dad.

What do these dreams mean?

Best answer:

Answer by Jared
wolves are your best friend. (wouldn’t that be cool) but on a serious note i think that maybe in your first dream your subconscious is telling you that if you go with the flow there will be change. in your second dream i think that maybe you are looking for something(mentally) and need supported by something(again mentally) in your third dream maybe you are having family issues and the only way to deal with them is if you have help to fight the problem and resolve the situation. [that is my input of your dreams just remember that i am no expert.]
