Remember when we promised to send one of you, a HODINKEE reader, on a VIP trip to visit famed Swiss watch manufacture Piaget?. You should, because it was the biggest, baddest giveaway we’ve ever held.
The response to this project was enormous, and we had hundreds of participants take the time watch all the videos necessary to answer the ten (very difficult) questions. From the few entrants that managed to answer all 10 correctly, 1 winner was selected – Bao Nguyen of Virginia, who brought his wife along for the adventure that took place earlier this month. During his stay, Bao was taken to the manufacture’s movement production facilities in La Cote-aux-Fées, within Swiss Canton Jura, and the headquarters responsible for the remainder of production, in Geneva. Below find a detailed recounting of the trip in Boa’s own words, and a few of our pictures of his experience.
My wife and I would like to thank Piaget and HODINKEE for our trip to Switzerland to visit Piaget, and to see its manufacture in La Cote aux Fees, and its headquarters in Geneva.
Here are a few of my thoughts:

Hamilton invited us to breakfast this morning to see the highlights of their Basel 2012 collection. There were some really excellent pieces, but the one that really caught our eye was the brand new intra-matic (all lower case).
The watch is clearly vintage inspired, and just as it was in the 1950s, it will be the sister watch to the Thin-O-Matic, the tribute of which we saw last year. The intra-matic feature simple stick markers with a domed crystal and dial. It is a thin watch at around 7mm thick. The intra-matic is great looking, and will be available in both steel and gold pvd, in 38mm and 42mm on leather or a bracelet.
The best part about the new intra-matic is the price: $ 845 for the 38mm and $ 945 for the 42mm – not bad for a nicely designed watch with a rock-solid ETA 2892 under the hood. These will hit stores in March.
Click through for more live pictures of the Hamilton intra-matic.

A few weeks ago, we published an article on the history of the Rolex GMT-Master. Besides featuring an incredible collection of Rolex GMT-Master watches, a pilot and an air plane, we also included some pictures of a cool leather pilot jacket from PME and the classic Ray-Ban Aviator Large Metal (gold frame, green glasses). We’ve put the latter two up for a give away here at Fratellowatches. As promised, we are picking a winner on this Friday the 20th of January 2012, the last day of the SIHH 2012 exhibition in Geneva.
Winner of the PME leather jacket is Casper. Congrats! Winner of the Ray-Ban Aviator Large Metal is Charlie. Congrats! You will be contacted and the items will be shipped asap.

Thanks to Mark who was the lucky winner of the MARCH LA.B AM1 40 Automatic watch (giveaway post here). Here are some follow-up thoughts and images by him:
“From the very opening of the watch, this timepiece has been a joy to experience. The box came wrapped within paper, and contained a congratulatory note. While the note may have only been included due to my good fortune in winning the watch, I’d like to think one such note is included with every watch purchase; MARCH seems to be a real class act, and everyone who owns this watch deserves to be congratulated on their purchase.
Within the box, which is constructed of some wonderful patterned leather-like material (if not actually leather), is a slim pamphlet, a metal warranty card, and a leather case which houses the watch and doubles as a wallet. I enjoyed the inclusion of the wallet, which I’m certain would look wonderful being pulled from the glovebox of a vintage sports car, but which I can’t see myself squeezing into a sports coat.

Luckily, none of us are interested in the watch for the wallet. The timepiece is beautiful. Its bold face and understated styling permit it to fly under the social radar, and it’s only commented upon by the most careful observer – if you want to be noticed wearing the watch, you really need to flaunt it. Compared to many other watches in my collection, it’s shockingly light, and I often forget that I’m wearing it when switching to it from a heavier piece. Only when it peeks out from beneath my cuff am I reminded of it, and I can’t help but stare. The flash of color as the second-hand sweeps by makes me think of the green glass and liner I know are hidden beneath the band, and I grin whenever I see it. The wide face is clear and easy to read, though difficult to pull away from.
There is one sole aspect of the watch I find myself torn over, and that’s the band. Made of an exquisite lizard leather, it is certainly beautiful, but oddly narrow, in my opinion. On one hand, the narrow band serves to make the bold case pop even more strongly. On the other hand, I think I would have enjoyed seeing a wider band paired with the case in a more complimentary fashion.

I can’t speak for the movement, but it appears to be keeping time admirably when out of use, riding my watch winder. And I don’t believe that there’s any real power reserve indicator, but it did keep ticking along nicely over the holidays when it went untouched for a 24 hour period.
All in all, the MARCH LA.B AM1 is a stunning watch, which I find myself giddy over every time I spot it on my wrist.”

Please thank the winner of the Orient Excursionist watch from the August 2011 aBlogtoRead.com watch giveaway for a follow-up image and comments. Congrats again to him:
“So, and I’ve been looking forward to this, my Orient Excursionist was waiting at my doorstep today. The box was a little beat up – but that was UPS’s fault. The watch inside was in another box, which was perfectly intact, protected by copious amounts of packing nuts. Orient packaged this watch nicely, in a presentation box with a riveted faux leather finish framing a stainless steel plate. My first impression of the watch was, “Wow, it’s big!” But it really isn’t, not after you put it on your wrist. (My wrist is quite narrow – I removed three links from the bracelet, and it’s still a bit loose; still, watch is nicely proportioned and doesn’t look out of place.)
My previous watch was a Skagen, which I’ve been wearing for a while, so I’m really out of practice for such a chunky watch. But I’m catching on quick, never fear.
The watch looks great. Ariel had them send me a blue dial one; the blue is rich, midnight blue, and the luminous markers pop out at you. The hands are long, and the 24 hour hand is visible, while at the same time not being obstructive. Haven’t worn it long enough to measure accuracy – so far, so good, though.
Here’s a picture of me wearing the watch – yes, the time is accurate, and I’m up too late… Thank you Ariel Adams, aBlogtoRead.com, and thank you Orient!”
Collectively… our pleasure. Enjoy.

Not a man of many words, Swisstek Jet-Setter limited edition watch winner Tim D. is certainly enjoying the watch he won in last month’s aBlogtoRead.com watch giveaway. According to him: “The Swisstek Jet-Setter Watch is classy with a touch of Fun. The bright colors and traditional stainless steel body is a good match. The fit and finish is good and the alarm and GMT feature is nice to have.” Enjoy Tim, and thanks everyone for participating in the monthly giveaways.

Two weeks ago, we announced a drawing to win the Rapport F3 Watch Winder we reviewed here. Response was enthusiastic to say the least. There must be a lot of readers who have watches that need winding. 255 to be exaxt. Thanks to all who entered and took the time to watch the review and identify the mystery guest who made a cameo on the video – Bertie the black cat. But for every contest, there can be only one winner so, sadly, 254 of you will have to keep winding your watches by hand or wearing more than one (not that we advocate that).
Without further ado, the winner of the Rapport F3 Watch Winder is Roberto Martins. Congratulations, Roberto! You can expect your winder to arrive via FedEx within a couple of weeks.
Still want to win something? Don’t forget about our book giveaway which ends soon!
