“What Is Up With Yo Eye!?” – The great Eddie Griffin in the seminal 2001 comedy “Double Take”Vintage Patek chronographs are in many ways perfectly proportioned.  There is a reason that they are regularly considered the archetypes of the the modern wristwatch.  But, say the year is 1942 and you aren’t very happy with a perfect case and idealic symmetry to your wristwatch’s dial. Say, you want strange scroll lugs and an oversized minutes register that just doesn’t seem to make any sense.  Well, then you’d be the person responsible for the watch above – a completely unique and totally bizarre Patek Philippe chronograph reference 1491.

Before dive computers existed, divers relied on watches for timing their dive. Diver style watches are still popular today as daily-wear watches. There are a few features that are typical of most dive watches. Uncluttered dial that is easy to read, a unidirectional timing bezel, good water resistance (obviously), a screw down crown, and a rubber strap or stainless steel bracelet with adjustable extension. This video points out those features, including how to use the divers bezel. Watches shown are Tissot Seastar 1000, Seiko Samurai, ESQ Tournament, and Invicta Pro Divers. Other well known divers watches include the Rolex Submariner, Omega Planet Ocean, and Blancpain Fifty Fathoms.

When Steve Jobs first introduced the latest iPod Nano he made a reference to the device’s potential use as a wrist watch thanks to a built in clock interface. This idea took hold with both the technophiles and watch nerds among us and has taken on a market all its own (remember this project?), heck even Apple has indulged us with their own (interesting) take on dial designs. It makes sense then that Australian designer Edwin Conan took this a step further with his iPocketWatch concept that he is currently trying to get off the ground with your help.

Conan’s prototype is currently on display at Pozible, Australia’s version of Kick-Starter. His industrial designs put a contemporary spin on the centuries old platform. The body structure is crafted from aircraft grade aluminum and comes with either square or round openings. Tethered to the case is a linked chain ready to tackle daily wear duties. Edwin ponders the traditional pocket watch:

They are beautiful instruments without a doubt, but aren’t they just a bit too old, too vintage, too out of date, too complicated, too last century, or even, too the-century-before-last-century? Well, not anymore.

The iPocketWatch concept has a goal of raising A$ 6,000 ($ 6,385 USD) and has thus far earned about half of that, with A$ 2,782. If you’d like to see this become a reality, head over to the projects page at Pozible, where you can make a donation and read all about the inspiration or this project.
