I've been looking at watches (my favorite are Citizen and Skagen) and I see the cheapest Rolex out there is $6,000!

I agree with your implied sentiment – they are way over priced. There are two elements to this phenomenon though.

First, a Rolex is made to last far more than a life time. They use "jewels" in their construction. i.e. A 16 jewel watch. The moving parts are too small to have bearings. So they use tiny pieces of concave diamond, ruby, or some other very hard material for the point of a moving axis part to rest in to supplement a bearing. None of the parts are stamped. They're all made by hand. And the materials for the parts are of a much higher quality.

Second, Rolex has created a symbol as excellence associated with their name, and has also developed a following because of that. But obviously their $6,000 watch doesn't cost them $5,000 to make. They do have a great price mark up. They have created for themselves a niche in the watch market – and who knows how long it will last. I'd rather spend $40 on a watch every year over buying a Rolex once.

Rolex watches are expensive, well made, and even the non watch enthusiasts will know what a Rolex is.

It is mostly a status symbol because as we all know you can get a watch for as cheap as a dollar or you can get a fake watch for like 50 dollars, but you don't get the same feeling wearing a fake as you do with a real one even though they look the same and only you know.

they are just so well made n accurate.the second hand on a genuine rolex is a continuous motion n on all other watches is a jerky second by second motion.

It is purely the name they have. Now days even the cheapest watch can keep as good a time as the best Rolex

Marketing, plain and simple. My $30 Casio keeps time just as well.
