Few television shows have been as loudly or consistently praised for the quality and authenticity of its costumes, sets and props as AMC’s Mad Men. Now in its fifth season, the show continues to go to great efforts to source appropriate accessories to showcase a hyper real version of New York in 1966.
This obsession with historically accurate physical culture extends to the wrists of the characters, and for years watch fans have eagerly paused DVDs on partially blurred wristshots of Don Draper and his co-workers. The ability to accurately identify a watch from 50 paces (or a blurred screengrab) is a highly prized skill among watch fans. James Enloe, founder of Watches In Movies (the premier watches on screen website), attributes the desire for fans to identify watches as an extension of watchnerds’ passion, and an important way to show off their otherwise esoteric knowledge. Of Mad Men, Enloe suggests that the there’s a double appeal for fans; “It makes for good watching simply for the ‘did they get it right?‘ factor. Are the watches worn proper for the period, or did something more modern slip in that shouldn’t have been there?” Today we’d like to take a closer look at some of the lesser stars of Mad Men: Four watches used in the most recent season.

To be honest, Fratellowatches rarely takes the time to explain mechanical watches in a way that even newbies understand why they are so expensive. We discuss timepieces of watch manufacturers like Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Rolex watches like it is our primary necessity of life. It is sheer luxury of course.
Over at Tested.com they understood the need for a crash course in (mechanical) watches and did a very cool explanation about high-end timepieces and what justifies their prices (and collecting them). We are honored to get mentioned in the article, together with our colleagues of Hodinkee and aBlogtoRead.
So, if you are new to watches and want to learn more about the technology used, the most sought-after brands and the watch collecting culture, make sure to read this article over at Tested.com. They have lots of cool other topics as well! A big thanks to Wesley Fenlon for the mention.

If you’re crazy about football (soccer, to American folk), then you’ll be even crazier about Hublot’s latest watch. Hublot’s King Power UEFA Euro 2012™ Ukraine & Poland Watches which capture the spirit of the games along with Hublot’s innovative perspective.
Not only are Poland and Ukraine co-hosting the next UEFA (Union des Associations Européennes de Football) co-hosts, they will be cooperating in the launch of an entirely different enterprise: luxury watches. Hublot watches are the official timekeepers of the UEFA Euro 2012, and in celebration, they are launching two watches in honor of the hosts.
Fans can pick their sides for their favorite teams by choosing from one of two versions: you can choose to support Ukraine with their blue-accented watch or have opponents seeing red with the bright Polish version. One watch combines the colors of the Polish red with silver titanium and ceramic casing while the other uses the bright blue of Ukraine’s colors with Hublot’s iconic King Gold case.
Both versions combine the spirit of the competition with the Hublot King Power case and mechanics. The rubber wrist strap, first popularized by Hublot watches, includes accents of Ukraine and Poland’s colors for an extra touch of spirit.
With scratch-resistant window dials and the standard high-quality mechanics found in all Hublot watches, the timepiece is ready to weather all the activities that football fan would wish.
The watches feature chronograph and date functions, at 45-minute counter—a perfect device for the countdown to half time in a football match. The watches will also be stamped with the 2012 UEFA logo on the case back to commemorate the year.
Hublot is the first watch brand to get involved with football, starting in 2006, and has since then become the official watch of the FIFATM World Cup, Ajax Amsterdam, and a long list of others. The watches were revealed to the public at the Kyiv Olympic Stadium—the very location scheduled for the tournament in July.
These are limited edition watches, so you’ll have to beat the competition if you want to snag them before the season is out. There will be 500 pieces released of the Polish version (716.OM.1129.RX.EUR12), and the Ukraine version (716.OM.1129.RX.EUR12) will be slightly more exclusive with only 250 pieces.
Hublot’s King Power UEFA Euro 2012™ Ukraine & Poland Watch combines the spirit of the games with Hublot’s own commitment to tough, durable timepieces that will always inspire cheers from fans and fear from their competitors.
