Girard-Perregaux is extending its charity-inspired romp through the color pallet with a new edition of its Sea Hawk II dive watch. Not long ago, we told you about the “Green Auction” version and today we learned of the “Big Blue” which is perhaps a more fitting color choice for a diver. The watch will be introduced at the World Oceans Day event at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City on June 5th, in conjunction with the screening of a Susan Rockefeller documentary called, “Mission of Mermaids.”

If you’re a regular reader of HODINKEE, you’re already familiar with the Sea Hawk II Pro, a watch we took diving, and the recent Green Auction edition. The Big Blue edition is mechanically identical to the others, with its manufacture calibre GP033R0 with power reserve complication, housed in a 1,000 meter water resistant steel case. Differences of this one are the blue dial and rubber strap and the world map in the power reserve meter. If you take this one diving, you’ll be able to admire the dial a long ways down, since blue is one color that remains highly visible at deeper depths. Just don’t go to 1,000 meters.

The MoMa World Oceans Day event takes place at MoMa on June 5, 2012 from 6-9pm.

Garmin first introduced a golf timepiece in 2010 with the Approach S1 Waterproof Golf GPS watch. S1 became the first watch to combine golf GPS with flexible, lightweight sport watch. In 2012, Garmin has once again pushed golf watch in the forefront with the introduction of Approach S3 Touchscreen GPS golf watch. Similar to Approach S1, the S3 has high-sensitivity GPS receiver with few other additional features, including a touchscreen system and detailed information of over 27000 golf courses throughout the world, including Australia and New Zealand.

In golf mode, Approach S3 uses satellites to list nearby courses using its preloaded and regularly updated information on over 27000 golf courses. The watch comes with these courses loaded so there is no need for additional download or subscription. It updates based on golfer’s actual real-time location. Once a course has been selected, it provides distances to the front, back and middle of the green and to the doglegs on high-resolution touchscreen. The 128 x 128 pixel, monochrome LCD touchscreen, which works with gloves on, allows user to adjust pin placement. The Green View feature, which is unique to the Approach S3, allows golfer to see the current green’s layout. Measure shot feature allows player to see exactly how far a shot went. Another feature of this watch is the layup distances feature, which shows the golfer the distance to doglegs and other hazards on the course. This watch also has the capability to keep scores digitally for individual players, and the results can be downloaded to be viewed or printed on a computer. Scoring options include the Stroke Play and Stableford. The watch also has a round timer that keeps track of time played and odometer to see the walking distance on and off the course.

This waterproof watch is very lightweight, weighing only 2 ounces and has a thin backlit display that allows easy legibility. It has a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that can last up to eight hours during continuous use in GPS mode or up to four weeks as a regular watch. The numbers are large and easily visible. The watch is made to withstand rigorous courses as well as everyday use. The watch comes in two different color combinations, which include the black with gray trim and the white with red trim. The Approach S3 Touchscreen GPS Golf Watchis currently available for the price of $ 350 and comes with AC adapter and USB/charging cable.

Hublot King Power Usain Bolt watch 1 737x1024 Hublot King Power Usain Bolt Watch

Hublot brand ambassador and all-around nice guy Usain Bolt just got his first limited edition watch. Usain Bolt is the fastest recorded runner, and is often affectionately referred to as the “fastest man in the world.” Actually he is not from Africa but rather Jamaica. A little while ago (before this watch was released) I got a chance to interview him. I actually asked him some questions about what a limited edition Hublot watch for him might look like. Let’s see if his answers match up to the result.

Inherently there isn’t much new here because this is your standard King Power Chronograph watch. I discuss it because I think Usain is pretty cool, and it is interesting to see many of the “reasons” for Hublot limited edition watches. What is different are the little touches that make it special for Mr. Bolt. What a damn good last name for a champion runner right? I’ve always thought that. According to Hublot the strap is made from “exactly the same leather as the shoes he wore when he broke the world record in Beiking in 2008.” To be honest I am not sure what that means. Is it leather from the exact same pair of shoes… or the same kind of shoes? The piece is a limited edition of 250 pieces – so I have a feeling that more than one pair of shoes was sacrificed in the making of this collection.

The watch case is 48mm wide in black ceramic. The gold tone is mixed with a dash of green in honor of the Jamaican flag, and are actually a product of using a 2N gold powder coating on the strap and flange ring. In the subsidiary seconds dial is a silhouette of Usain’s signature pose. The best part is that it looks good on his wrist, and if you are a tall Jamaican Olympic runner it might look good on your wrist as well. Again, Hublot will make 250 pieces of the limited edition King Power Usain Bolt watch.

Cartier has been producing luxurious and high quality watches since early 20th century. In fact, Cartier produced the first men’s wristwatch in 1904 named the Santos. The Tank, one of the oldest collections by Cartier, is rumored to have been inspired by wartime tanks that were seen in World War I. This 2012, Cartier has added a new watch to its Tank Collection called the Anglaise watch.

The Cartier Tank Anglaise Watch is a look that combines features of two other Cartier watches, the Tank Francaise and the Ballon Blue. It is also the third model that is attributed to a region similar to Tank Americaine and Tank Francaise. This timepiece comes in three female and male sizes as well as three colors, which include 18k white gold, yellow gold, and pink gold. The male version comes in a case size of 36.2 mm x 47 mm x 9.82 mm, while the female version comes in 29.8 mm x 39.2 mm x 9.5 mm. A winding crown with interesting design can be seen in the middle of the thick bezel that is made of sapphire crystal cabochon. The glass on the case is made of scratch resistant sapphire. The case has a water resistance of 30 meters.

While there are various models of this watch, the large sized men’s watches are the favorites as they have the popular 1904MC caliber in-house movement, which powers the watch. This is a self-winding automatic movement, which can be seen from the sapphire case back. The movement allow for hour, minute, second, and date functions. The dial’s designs are different depending on the model of the watches. Some of the dials are filled with diamonds while others have beautiful 18k rhodium plated white gold Flinque engravings. The hours are marked by Roman numerals, and the minute and hour hands are blue-steel swords.

Finishing off the beautiful Cartier watches are the bracelets. The bracelets on the timepieces differ with the models as well, but they all nicely and effortlessly fit with the case. The bracelets are made to comfortably sit on the wrists and are not heavy. Most of the bracelets are made of 18k rhodium plated gold. For the diamond lovers, there is Tank Anglaise covered in diamonds. Cartier Tank Anglaise Watch is currently priced at $ 42,000. This beautiful and luxurious watch will offer the quality and reliability Cartier customers have become accustomed to.

BUBEN & ZORWEG, a company founded in 1995, is quite known in the horological world. It has reputation for making high-end safes and watch winders that are of high craftsmanship and quality. In 2012, it has branched in to a new venture and introduced its first wristwatch. This limited edition collection timepiece by BUBEN & ZORWEG is called the One Perpetual Calendar watch. The collection combines modern design with complicated and fascinating features.

The watch comes in three different versions that include rose gold, white gold, and platinum. The case is quite large and measures 46 millimeter in diameter. Inside the case is the caliber BZ01 – MHO movement that powers the watch. This hand-winding movement, designed by renowned watchmaker Martin Braun, is 40 millimeters in diameter and fits nicely in the case. The caliber is manually wound but it does have a 156 hours power reserve. The power reserve indicator is located in the back can be seen through the open sapphire crystal display on the back of the watch. A very large balance wheel can also be seen. The movement beat at frequency of 18000 beats per hour and is made of 312 parts and 58 jewels.

The perpetual calendar is easy to understand and read as it can be seen in uniquely designed windows. This calendar is fully adjustable calendar. There are day and month indicator right below the 12 o’clock position and big date indicator above the six o’clock position. The hour markers and hour and minute hands are similar in color to that of the case, which vary depending on the version of the watch. The look is finished off with a beautiful leather strap with and buckle that is made for easy comfort, fit, and adjustability.

David Yurman Revolution Shelby watch 1 David Yurman Revolution Shelby 1000 Limited Edition Watch

American automotive legend Carroll Shelby passed away recently. He worked up until the end of his life and helped changed the face of what was cool in American automobiles. He is most well-known for his long partnership with Ford producing many versions of the Shelby Mustang, as well as the famous Shelby Cobra car. Just before he died, Shelby American released a new version of the Shelby Mustang called the Shelby 1000. It is meant to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the company, and has 1,100hp. So where does that 1000 number come from? I really don’t know.

Shelby partnered with David Yurman for a special limited edition version of their Revolution sport watch called the David Yurman Revolution Shelby 1000 Limited Edition. Actually there are two versions of the watch. One is strictly limited, and the other will have a “limited production.” The cool watch gracefully embodies the spirit of the Cobra and the famous sport’s mark marque. Other brands such as MARCH LA.B have worked with Shelby before. This one however is specially made for the Shelby 1000 and the 50th anniversary of the car maker. At the same time it can live alone as a cool Shelby Cobra themed chronograph.

Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 David Yurman Revolution Shelby 1000 Limited Edition Watch

The already handsome David Yurman Revolution received a few impressive modifications for this limited edition piece. Wait a minute, since when does David Yurman make cool sport watches? Well as of recently I guess. The long time watch maker has seemingly gotten more involved with sport watches and this is proof they more or less know what they are doing. I guess that means David Yurman is back on the list of brands to watch.

The Revolution Shelby 1000 watch is 43.5mm wide in steel. The limited edition version is in black vulcanized rubber coated steel. The normal version has some rubber elements with a brushed steel case. The bezel has a tachymeter (of course), and the sides of the case are black on both models. I really like how the chronograph pushers are integrated into the design to look like crown guards. I have always had a weakness for this design style.

David Yurman Revolution Shelby watch dial 1 David Yurman Revolution Shelby 1000 Limited Edition Watch

1967 shelby cobra David Yurman Revolution Shelby 1000 Limited Edition Watch

On the dial are the signature Shelby double racing stripes and of course the cobra. It just isn’t Shelby without the cobra figurine. While I typically don’t like shared dial branding, I think the David Yurman and Shelby names co-exist in a reasonable way on the dial. As an American car lover, it is pretty sweet. Cooler still is the strap. Now that is a clever piece of design. David Yurman continued the look of the cobra snake body into the rubber strap. How sweet is that? I really like this design element a lot actually – even though on paper it could sound cheesy.

Inside the watch is a Swiss ETA Valjoux 7753 automatic chronograph movement. On the back of the case is Carroll Shelby’s signature (no he didn’t sign each one). The 12 hour register was removed on the dial to offer a cleaner bi-compax chronograph layout. It works for the design, and I appreciate the instrumental design of the chronograph subdials.

David Yurman Revolution Shelby watch 2 David Yurman Revolution Shelby 1000 Limited Edition Watch

Coated in black rubber the David Yurman Shelby 1000 watch will be limited to 150 pieces and be priced at $ 8,600. The steel version that is not limited to a specific production amount (will likely be make for a year or so before production ends), will be priced at $ 7,200. Seems like a rather large price gap between the two right? The watches are very cool and look for availability in November 2012.
