Want to know just how the the very first atomic clock (built by the UK’s National Physical Laboratory in 1955!) worked? We thought so.  Above is a super vintage-y, almost downright campy video explaining just that.  Enjoy.

Last week we showed you five watches from the May sales from Audemars Piguet that were all pretty awesome, and yet none of them were Royal Oaks.  Today, we are showing you two watches from AP in a May sale that are indeed Royal Oaks, but they aren’t just any Royal Oaks, they are two very special, super early Royal Oaks…

If you’re anything like us, you’re a little bit intriqued by the idea of a Lytro camera, the world’s first light field camera that allows the user to focus the photograph AFTER its been taken.  How does it work exactly? We’re not entirely sure, but if you’re curious about what it produces, all you need to do is look at the image above.

Basically, you can set the depth of field of the photograph just by a click of your mouse, and in this picture, you can adjust which part of this limited edition AP Perpetual Calendar is in focus, thanks our old friend Steve Hallock.  Check it out and let us know what you think.  Imagine what a Lytro photograph of a great mechanical watch movement would be like…

On July 1, 1941 the Brooklyn Dodgers played the Philadelphia Phillies. This game was televised, but before it began, something was shown that had never been seen before – a televised advertisment for a consumer product.  And for what was the world’s first televised advertisement?  A watch, of course.

The ad that begat all other ads was for Bulova wristwatches, one of the great American timepiece companies.

The ad is pretty simple by today’s standards, but that’s ok – it only cost Bulova $ 9. Priceless.

(Thanks for the tip Charlie)

It is annoying, but meanwhile Spammers know how to make it look like you are the one who is sending such mails. Got some of them myself, but since I know that I don’t send myself any junk mail, I just delete them. As far as I know, there is no other way yet to deal with such crap.

A verb is a word that names an action, like walk, run, jump, read, dance, etc.

An adverb is a word that ends in “-ly”.

With that in mind, reread your sentences.

With the world focused on Occupy Wall Street, we thought it was time to highlight two watches coming up for sale in the near future that have a special tie to the #ows movement, or rather the very institution which it opposes.  We’re talking about the American banking industry, and what we’ve found today are two very expensive mechanical timepieces owned by two of the founding fathers of this industry – one owned by John Pierpont Morgan (think JP Morgan Chase), and another owned by Dean Witter (think Morgan Stanley). And, these aren’t just any watches, but true BSD, real OG watches befitting of men of their relative stature.  These watches are complicated, and very expensive.  So, we wanna know, which of you young Wall Streeters has the gusto to drop the estimated $ 700,000 on the pair?

Alpina Startimer Classic watch Alpina Startimer Classic Automatic Chrono Watch Has Very Sad Hands

WTF Alpina? Seriously, is this a joke? Does this watch suffer from hereditary dwarfism? Can you even call a 44mm wide watch a dwarf? Oh, I am sorry, I meant “little watch.” No, the watch is the right size, but the hands, those sad pathetic looking hands, are shrunken at the least. Look at them looking all sad? Even the chronograph subdial hands feel bigger.

bk tinyhands Alpina Startimer Classic Automatic Chrono Watch Has Very Sad Hands

I have no clue what Alpina was thinking when their designer approved the hands on this Startimer Classic Automatic Chronograph watch. More like TinyTimer. This is exactly the type of crap that pisses me off. This watch makes me want to yell obscenities. Everything else about this watch is fine if you are going for that retro chronograph watch look – but those hands, what the hell is up with those stupid tiny hands? This isn’t just a mistake, this is horological abuse.

Do I need to even explain to anyone why or how the hour, minute, and chronograph seconds hands are small beyond excuse? Maybe this is a joke. Maybe Alpina is just messing with me. I can see them in Geneva giggling like 7th grade pranksters. “E-mail it to Ariel, make sure he thinks it is serious! Huh hu, he is gonna flip!” It wouldn’t be the first time…

The watch dial even has a pulsograph for measuring pulse. Pretty worthless with those hands. The chronograph seconds hand only goes so far as the start of the hour indicators. WHY?! Screw it, I don’t even want to be nice or attempt to figure this out anymore. If you are the person who designed this dial then please never be in the same room with me. You not only embarrass an otherwise decent brand, but you display with incredible clarity just how inept you are a watch or industrial designer. Go back to making dollhouses. Repugnant. This watch gives me vertigo and makes we want to give up analog watches altogether and buy a digital Casio.

If you haven’t had enough short-handedness or simply don’t get the point of what I am saying, click over here for more.
