My step dad has a rare authentic Rolex watch and would like to sell it. Any ideas on where he should go or who he should talk to? He lives in Ann Arbor, Mi. Any ideas on any sites that could help him out?

You can try ebay but to ensure you don't sell it too cheaply get it apraised by a watch specialist, who may make an offer on them. Check out what other similar rolexs are being bidded up to on ebay to give you an idea of the value.

Sotherbys sometimes have specialist watch sales as well which if it's really rare might be a good idea.

truth be told if you go through ebay you probably won't get true value if it is in fact authentic. I would also stay away from pawn shops and cash for gold sites. First thing you should do is go to your local jeweler and have it valued. Again do this first. Then and only then should you worry about selling it. Ask the Jeweler if he/she knows of anywhere reputable to sell it or that would give you value. These guys go trade shows and what not so they should always be the first ones to ask. Don't sell your self short either Authentic Rolex's can go for thousands used, so don't be afraid to check the value at more than one place.

I have an old Rolex watch and would want to restore it. Does anyone know any good places in So. Cal?
And yes, I have tried Rolex USA. It is simply unreasonable to do it with them. They wanted to charge me as much a whole brand new watch cost!!!

Any watchmaker can take care of this issue. All you need is to polish your watch and have it serviced. It should not cost you more then $250. Los Angeles has one of the biggest jewelery industry – you should not have any problems finding someone to help you out.
Try to buy a Rolex dial at www.w-precision.com and then have it installed with any watchmaker.

those things run in the thousands, would you buy a fake one such as a men's submariner? if so how much?

No point. It is obviously fake, when you drive car twice as cheap as real watch, wear clothing from supermarket etc–i.e. you obviously cannot afford one.Just get the watch you can afford–it isn't really worse.

I wouldn't buy a fake anything whatsoever. It goes against my upbringing to be honest. I'd just buy the watch, but I'm not too fond of Rolex's. I currently wear a Givenchy watch that is a heirloom.

The "better" copies sure do; they have quartz mechanism that work just fine, at least until the battery dies. Of course, the quartz mechanism means that the hand "jerks" every second, while the genuine Rolex mech allows the second hand to "glide". And that's why you spend a king's ransom for the real thing.

But given that most people aren't going to look closely enough, I just get one of those cheapies on the street from the guy who hangs his merchandise in a trenchcoat. People are so easily fooled, so enjoy the results.

Some do. Like the $200 ones. But the ones you buy in Chinatown for $25 are junk. Some of these are illegal to sell.
