Bell & Ross Question&Answer:

Question by bobo the hoho

I have a springer spanial named molly and im getting a puppy soon. Molly always scratches up the door and wall when she wants to go out so i got a leash and added bells to it and hung it from the doorknob. So do i just ring it every time i let her out and then she will just catch on? any tips? help me!

Answer by Nekkid Dog ©
Encourage her to ring it before taking her out.. take her paw or nose and have her ring it. Praise then take her outside.

if she is shy or startles easy, you may want to ring the bell at first until she gets accustomed to the new sound.

Eventually she will associate the bell with going out and will eventually use it to ask to go.

One of his litter-mates is trained to do this, and the owner said it was really easy. What do I need to do?

Best answer:

Answer by D A
Can you contact the owner? If no, you must first teach “touch” to your hand, then transfer the command to an object and then to the specific object. See link for teaching touch/targeting.

I was just wondering how i can train my beagle to use a bell when she wants to go out . BTW SHE IS SOOO STUBBORRNN

*Smile*. She’s stubborn but you can be just as stubborn if not more.

Stand your ground and teach her. Patience. Use treats as a beginning motivator. Be careful, though. Also it helps if you attach a piece of fabric or rope to the bell she can pull on.

Picture it in your mind.

Bell & Ross Question&Answer:

Question by bigshowdsp

I am house breaking my 13 week old boxer and I think the best way is to bell train him. I have friends who belled trained their American Bulldog and it worked great and still does. How do you do that? We are beginning to crate train him, but I think the bell training would be better.

Best answer:

Answer by d b
Crate training is good for when you aren’t home with puppy, or too busy to be watching him. Bell training is good once puppy has earned house privilages – if puppy can’t leave the room you are in to ring the bell, it doesn’t work! But you can start with puppy now while he is young. Hang a bell within his reach by the door. Every time you take him out that door, ring the bell first. Puppy will learn to associate the sound of the bell with the door opening. Eventually she will get curious about the bell. At first, if you catch her near the bell, ring it and take her out. But as she gets the connection, start waiting for her to nose at it. Anytime you hear the bell, you have to take her out, even if she rings it several times in a row. Just make sure she is not playing when you take her out, just to potty and back end, so she doesn’t abuse the privilage. If puppy isn’t catching on after several weeks (don’t expect them to get it right away although some dogs do) start lifting her paw and using it to ring the bell, to get her used to ringing it herself. But give her a chance to learn it himself before resorting to this. Good LUck!

Its fairly easy, I simply tied a bell on a ribbon and attached it to te back door, each time I would take the puppy out I would ring the bell, then take him out. He soon learned to ring the bell when he wanted out.
