Okay, so NO, I am NOT a fan of Miley Cyrus, but this one song is just inspiring. I have my reasons for not liking her, but PLEASE, do not comment about her! I want comments on the video, not Miley Cyrus. Well, I haven’t done an equestrian video in months, so I felt that I owed you all one. So here you go! Exams are coming up, so this might be the only one until summer. Sorry, life just comes first! Some of these clips are mine, and others belong to their rightful owners. If you’re in the market for a vintage Heuer (truth: you should always be in the market for a vintage Heuer), this weekend presents some great buying opportunities as there are three auctions taking place, offering a few dozen old chronos for sale, at what could be very fair prices.

We’ll let Jeff and the gang over at On The Dash break em down for you, but all three sales have some nice things on the block.

“What Is Up With Yo Eye!?” – The great Eddie Griffin in the seminal 2001 comedy “Double Take”Vintage Patek chronographs are in many ways perfectly proportioned.  There is a reason that they are regularly considered the archetypes of the the modern wristwatch.  But, say the year is 1942 and you aren’t very happy with a perfect case and idealic symmetry to your wristwatch’s dial. Say, you want strange scroll lugs and an oversized minutes register that just doesn’t seem to make any sense.  Well, then you’d be the person responsible for the watch above – a completely unique and totally bizarre Patek Philippe chronograph reference 1491.

Marvin was founded in 1850 by two brothers (by the name of Didisheim) in Saint-Imier, in the middle of the Jura. Before we write yet-another-romantic-but-sad-story about a watch company that didn’t survive the quartz crisis in the 1970s but DID have some nice watches before that time we are going to stop here.

Just a few years ago, Marvin Watches Co was brought back to life again by its current owners, true passionate people about watches and the watch industry. We know, because we’ve met them during BaselWorld and at their current headquarters in Vaumarcus, Switzerland.

Marvin Regulator Automatic M115

The nice thing about being a watch manufacturer with some history, is that you might have some antique catalogs and drawings of watches that once were yours. Marvin has such luck, as they made pretty nice (and affordable) pieces in the 20th century. Some of their current models are also based on those vintage timepieces but Marvin also invests quite an amount of time and resources in designing new watches as well. The Loeb collection is a perfect example of that.

However, we love watches that have some ‘vintage DNA’ and picked the Marvin M115, which is their own code for the Marvin Regulator Automatic from their Malton collection. This 42mm diameter round watch has a very cool Regulator feature that we’ve seen on other watches as well (Chronoswiss, IWC, Sinn). Chronoswiss was the first to design a Regulator for a wrist watch, as it is normally something for clocks, and it has been their ‘signature’ watch ever since. Marvin designed a Regulator as well, in three different flavors and here is what we think.

Marvin M115 Regulator

Marvin achieved to design and produce a round watch with a classic looking regulator lay-out, without becoming old-fashioned. This Marvin M115 is a modern wrist watch that’s suitable for the young executive that wants to have his first decent timepiece without having to pick entry-level models from big watch manufacturers and wants to refrain from buying vintage 35mm classic watches as well. Marvin Watches Co uses a nice modern 42mm case with some kind of design signature in the side, as shown below.

Marvin Malton Collection

Inside is a Swiss made movement, based on Dubois-Dépraz caliber 14072. This movement features the Regulator lay-out, a 38-hour power reserve and a date indicator. The date indicator has a small magnifier under the sapphire crystal. As you can see below, the mechanical movement is relatively standard but does have a customized case back for Marvin. However, if you are new to mechanical watches or this will be your first mechanical timepiece, you’ll be excited to have a glance at the movement every once in a while.

Marvin M115 Regulator

As you can see above, the straps have a quick-release to be removed from the case very easily. We’ve seen this system with some Patek Philippe watches as well. By sliding the small button with your nail, you make the spring bar a bit smaller so it can be released from the watch case. A very convenient method to change your straps.

Marvin M115

We are impressed by the design of the case and the clean classic Regulator dial (without becoming a timepiece that’s too classic for young people). The M115 comes with a black dial with grey sub dials, a grained silver dial and a white dial. We’d pick either the grained silver dial or the white dial with the very nice blue hands and matching blue numerals. Being able to read a Regulator dial is a matter of just moments and this feature does give a nice classic nod to the timepiece.

A watch for just over 3000 USD ($ 3120 USD) with a good solid Swiss made mechanical movement, original case design, wonderful designed dial, Regulator feature, a leather quality strap and nicely finished buckle is hard to find these days. The big brands are all scaling up which makes some room for a number of smaller brands with very interesting (and uncommon) timepieces that jump into that gap of $ 1000 – $ 3000 USD watches. Marvin watches start at under $ 1000 USD and go up to approx $ 3000 USD.

You can see and order their watches on-line, or through a selected number of dealers.

The space is not the final frontier for Omega Watches: over fifty years ago astronaut Wally Schirra wore his Omega Speedmaster in orbit on his space mission. To commemorate the half-century anniversary of Omega’s first launch into space, the illustrious watch brand is realizing their Omega Speedmaster “FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE” Chronograph Watch.

Omega watches are one of the very few timepieces that have been worn in space. In order to pass the tests required by NASA, each watch had to be carefully inspected and put through numerous tests to certify that the watches would maintain their accuracy in orbit.

This accuracy was crucial to astronauts in early space travel because much of the calculations were figured by humans and not by their instruments (unfortunately, there were no iPhone apps for astronauts), so every second counted in the calculations.

This was particularly crucial in missions in space, such as the Apollo 13 mission where the crew had to rapidly recalculate and improvise on their protocols to land before running out oxygen.  Lucky for them, Omega watches were there to keep their calculations on track.

Omega watches, of course, were up to par and from March 1965 onward, the Omegas were officially out of this world and in NASA’s missions.  Wally Schirra was the first to test Omega’s qualities in space in 1962 on the Mercury Atlas 8 mission, but even Buzz Aldrin wore an Omega during his historic walk on the moon.

The commemorative Speedmaster today takes all the worthy qualities of the original.  With a manual-winding caliber 1861, chronometric and tachymetric functions, and a 48 hour power reserve, the watch is incredibly accurate.  Water resistant to 50 meters/167 feet and accurate hundreds of miles above the sea level, the Speedmaster is incredibly durable.  With a polished black bezel and dial, complemented by a soft brown leather band, the watch isn’t hard on the eyes, either.

A few details that the new release includes that you won’t find on the originals include detail work on the back of the watch case with Omega’s original Seahorse and “The First Omega in Space, October 3, 1962) etched into the stainless steel.  October 3 refers to the Mercury Atlas 8 mission—the very first day an Omega left the earth.

The Omega Speedmaster “FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE” Chronograph Watch is more than just a timepiece, but also a part of the mosaic of American and world history. Omega’s dedication and talent provided many astronauts the backup they required during their dangerous, yet wondrous missions.  Today, it remains just as accurate, and just as integral to man’s dream of landing among the stars.

One of the more impressive watches to come out of Basel this year came not from the quiet cantons of Switzerland, but rather from none other than the quintessential Japanese brand, Seiko.

The Seiko Astron is a Solar GPS watch and takes its name from the Seiko Astron of 1969, the worlds first quartz watch (which got a very cool reissue recently) . Invoking the Astron name isn’t (just) convenient marketing on Seiko’s behalf; the Astron of 2012 is a worthy successor to its groundbreaking namesake.

What makes this watch special is a low energy GPS receiver that means that this watch can talk to GPS satellites to determine the time and date on its own. The receiver in the watch gets a signal from at least 4 satellites to accurately update the time, one a day, and in every timezone on earth. How this works in the real world is the really cool part. You step off a plane, hit the button and in about six seconds your watch will have synchronised the time from satellites (the indicator at 10 tells you how many). Once it’s worked out the time, it will take another 30 seconds to automatically adjust the time for you. It’s easy to see why this watch would be a boon for jetsetting types.
