Question by sweet_angel4eva2003
Which theory of emotion-James-Lange, Cannon-Bard, Schachters Two-Factor, or evolutionary-applies in each of the examples below. More than one theory may apply. Justify or support your explanation according to the components or characteristics of the theory.
Joe, who has a habit of leaving everything to the last minute, is frantically studying for his final exam in statistics. He has an empty, dull feeling in his stomach,a feeling he attributes to anxiety over his upcoming exam. In fact, he fears his anxiety level is so high that it is interferring with his concentration. He knows from past experiences that when he feels this way it is useless to continue studying, so he decides to go to a movie with his friend
This one was a tricky one and I could not figure it out

This example sounds like it would fit best in the James-Lange theory of emotion. In this approach, some type of physiological arousal comes first (“dull feeling in his stomach”) and then we interpret how we feel (anxiety) based upon this sensation. Only then do we decide what action to take (he can’t study so he decides to go to the movie).
I don’t see any evolutionary connection here, and the two-factor theory would require that he look to his environment for an explanation.
Interestingly, I just did a podcast episode on this very topic. Check out my podcast called The Psych Files. I created it for anyone taking a psych course. Here’s the link to the episode on these three theories of emotion:

You might find other podcasts and posts on the site useful for other topics you’re studying.
Hope this helps!
