Back in 2009 we introduced you to Biel based manufacture Armin Strom, a 16 person operation making and finishing some properly impressive calibers. Today the company boasts 18 people and their involvement with racing sports such as F1 and Extreme Sailing has yielded some timepieces bespoke with components straight out of the competitive machines themselves. This year at Basel, Armin Strom is introducing the Racing Carbon to celebrate this involvement.

The Racing Carbon’s carbon inlays along the levels of brass bridges and plates. The composite’s strategic use within the dial creates a depth of contrast against the revealed twin mainspring barrels and gear train. The carbon is uncoated and raw, leaving it with a matte appearance and keeping it in its lightest state. A plate of carbon is found in back as well, covering a portion of the caliber ARM12 but leaving the balance and escapement exposed.

The dial cutaways reveal just enough to create an interaction with the wearer, without sacrificing legibility or functionality. As you wind the watch, the barrels and gears begin their easily observable dance right before your eyes. Those two barrels also provide a stout 7 day power reserve which comes in handy as the watch is a hand wind.

Geneva based independent watchmaker Laurent Ferrier is showing off a new dial at this years Baselworld fair (Ferrier’s third year), and it’s a lot more than meets the eye. The red gold case is now accompanied by red gold applied roman indexes on the dial. But it doesn’t stop there, the entire dial, which has a rich brushed slate appearance in the flesh, is actually in itself 18k gold.

The unique slate color is achieved by a galvanic treatment, which send electrons through the metal submerged in a liquid bath. Even with the altered color, the dial retains the depth of a Rothko painting which you find yourself staring at for an hour.

Within the watch is the impeccable caliber 916.01, complete with “double spiral tourbillon” and contemporary finishing. Learn more about the movement at their site, right here. Words fall short when it comes this movement and dial, so have a look at more pictures after the break.

A certain air of sophistication and luxury has become synonymous with Michael Kors‘ fashionable watches and they’re insanely popular after the designer was anointed as one of Oprah’s Favorite Things. Ranging in the $ 250 to $ 500 price bracket, Kors watches aren’t exactly the cheapest things on the market. Considering the longevity of the watch, it’s wearability, and the materials used to create the watch, you can get the same sophistication at more suitable prices.

4 mk styles

Michael Kors watches range from $ 300 to $ 500–and it's only stainless steel

When people purchase a gold Michael Kors watch for over $ 400, they expect to get some carat of gold in that watch. Not so with Kors’ gold-tone watches, which have no gold content at all. All metal Kors watches are ion-plated stainless steel. To get rich, varying colors, many watch manufacturers use an advanced surface finishing process called ion-plating, which combines certain chemical gases to produce a particular color and increased durability and wear resistance. When colors of watches used to fade after a month or two, ion-plating allows certain fashionable colors up to two years of wearability before the watch even starts to fade. Most watches are made this way and many are backed by at least a two-year limited warranty that cover internal movement components of the watch.

The outward components include the face of the watch, known as the crystal, the bezel–or the glitz around the face–and the part that attaches the face to the watch bracelet is called the case. The bezel can be made of rhinestones and often absorbs most of the shock if you wear your watch while using your hands. Because the bezel is so susceptible to damage there is a $ 32 fee to replace it as well as the other outward components of the watch. The watch will have to be sent in, but don’t send it to Michael Kors as he is the designer, not the manufacturer for his watches. Michael Kors, and many other fashion and luxury watches, are manufactured at Metro Service Center in Dallas, Texas. Even if you are local to Dallas, you still must send your watch into Metro through the mail.

This warranty is the same for many watches, including Kors, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and DKNY. Those brands are made in the exact same way, in similar style to Kors–but just for a lot less. DKNY styles top off at around $ 300 and Marc by Marc Jacobs has many styles around $ 250, although there definitely are more expensive styles to choose from. You can find even more brands and models that are less expensive although they’re made with the same materials and processes. Furthermore, your watch would be different from everyone else who is throwing their money to Michael Kors for the same look time and time again.

Question by eeeeeeeli

How is wealth ultimately created? Would it matter whether one spent a dollar on bus fare, or a luxury watch? Or is the answer simply dependent upon which contributes more to overall investment in new technologies, efficiency, etc. (whatever drives wealth creation) – and this could be consumer spending or business resources.

Best answer:

Answer by simplicitus
Yes it matters, but not as much as spending vs. not spending, especially as you are referring to consumer spending.

For example, government spending on military hardware creates much less economic growth, both in the short term and the long term, than money spent on schools and education.

All other things being equal, money spent on services and on labor intensive goods has a higher multiplier effect than money spent on capital intensive goods such as cars and electronics. It is also the case that goods with higher local content have a higher multiplier effect than goods with lower local content.

Thus, for a government wanting to stimulate the economy, it matters how it does so. Simple tax cuts for the rich (1.03) and payroll tax cuts for corporations have less stimulus value (1.29) than increasing foodstamps (1.73) and extending unemployment benefits (1.64).

I’m thinking getting a citizen watch for my bf but I found the price I got on Ebay is more than $ 100 cheaper than amazon. I was wondering if they’re fake…Anyone could explain this for me? THX!
I’m seeing two watches. Both of them are unfortunately citizen…

If something seems too good to be true, it usually is.
The authentic watches on eBay are used.
The new ones are fake.
It’s as simple as that.

By the way, a $ 40 watch can be bought that is much more accurate than a Rolex, and no less accurate than the most expensive Citizen.

You may have heard of the Flying Officer, the Gallet’s most famous model: a two register chronograph with cities of the world listed by time zone around the dial and a rotating bezel to track times across said time zones or measure hours elapsed (by placing the 12 at the location of the tip of the hour hand). Harry Truman even wore one that was a gift from his staff. (See the pictures below.)  But did you know the original Flying Officer is actually a really innovative timepiece, for more than one reason? We bet you didn’t. But, here, Eric Wind explains why Truman’s watch was so important, and so cool.

Click through for the full story on the original Flying Officer plus original advertisements, pictures of Truman’s own watch, and other interesting tidbits.

Coming up for auction at Christie’s today is an unbelievable original Rolex Milgauss (reference 6541), brought to market in the 1950s for use by those working in areas of high magnetism. These watches are particularly distinguished by their dial, hands, and bezel.

The honeycomb dial consists of two layers of aluminum, which in addition to the rest of the case and movement design helped to protect it against magnetism. The steel hour and minute dauphine hands do not have lume and the center hand is a striking lightning bolt that was the inspiration for the second hand on the current iteration of the Milgauss. The black revolving bezel has a red triangle at the 12 o’clock position as well as 1 through 5 demarcations, symbolizing 10 to 50 minute increments.

This is perhaps the most mint original Milgauss in existence and the estimate is $ 88,000 to $ 144,000. Click here for more information.

Jacob & Co Question&Answer:

Question by alacowgirl123

The big question: Edward or Jacob? And reasons why one is better than the other?
I’m personally in love with both Edward and Jacob, Edward’s perfection against Jacob’s beautiful character flaws. So which one’s better? Edward or Jacob? And why? Or will they always be equal?
Sorry if I’m offending anyone, but there was no hard feelings intended. And please, no Twilight haters.

Answer by Please, use the SEARCHBAR
The big question: WHY DOES NO ONE KNOW HOW TO USE THE SEARCHBAR?!

Sorry, but seriously. Besides the fact that this same question was already on the front page of B&A, this question has been asked on this forum over 4000 times. I kid you not. Please, there is no need to ask it again.
