Le plus remarquable, le plus fin et sans aucun doute l’un des plus beaux avions de ligne à hélices a été le Lockheed Constellation, qui a servi dans la plupart des grandes compagnies aériennes du monde. Le projet du Constellation date de juin 1939, lorsque Howard Hughes et Jack Frye, les principaux responsables de la compagnie TWA, ont demandé au bureau d’études de Lockheed de développer un grand quadrimoteur de transport commercial destiné à servir sur les lignes transcontinentales américaines. Le prototype de l’appareil, caractérisé par quatre moteurs Wright de 2 200 ch, un fuselage à l’aérodynamique parfaitement étudiée, un empennage tridérive et un train d’atterrissage tricycle à la configuration étonnamment moderne, n’a effectué son premier vol qu’en janvier 1943 en raison de l’entrée en guerre des Etats-Unis. Comme l’aviation militaire américaine faisait alors feu de tout bois, l’appareil fut réquisitionné afin d’assurer des missions de transport de troupes. Dès que les hostilités s’achevèrent, les 15 Constellation en service dans l’US Army Air Force revinrent à des activités beaucoup plus pacifiques. La compagnie Lockheed, voyant déjà beaucoup plus loin, investit alors des sommes très élevées pour produire le Model L1049 Super-Constellation, dont les principales caractéristiques résidaient dans des dimensions supérieures, des réservoirs de carburant supplémentaires installés aux extrémités des ailes et, surtout, des moteurs faisant appel à la technologie nouvelle … Video Rating: 4 / 5
