This year at Basel World, Rolex updated the purest of their sport watches, the no-date Sub, with a new reference (114060).  This new no-date Sub very much the same as the earlier no-dates, but there are some difference, which we covered at length in  this detailed look at the new Sub here.

But, to really understand what the 114060 Sub is, we thought it would be best to compare it to a no-date Submariner from forty years earlier, a Reference 5512 from 1972 – and that is exacly what you see above.  These watches are exactly the same, except not at all, don’t you think?

A question that journalists love to ask watch execs is “what watch would you wear if you weren’t in your position?”  Most of the time, they laugh it off so as to not offend the powers that be, or give praise to a competitor.  Ask an independent watchmaker the same question, and you’ll get a real answer.

In fact, one of the leading independents, Mr. Max Büsser of MB&F, went beyond answering that question, he’s showing us exactly what we would, and is wearing.  Max is the proud owner of a brand new watch, a watch not from MB&F, but rather from his long-time friend and some-time collaborater Peter Speake-Marin.  The watch Mr. Busser is wearing is the Speake-Marin Spirit Pioneer, a watch we showed you first here.

We have to say, it’s great to see friends and colleagues buying each others pieces, and this is the type of industry that gives us hope for the future of watchmaking.  Here is a better look at the watch on Mr. Busser’s wrist:

Jay-Z and his watches.  Historically, he’s been an AP man.  He even had a limited edition watch created in his honor, and donated his personal Audemars Piguet Las Vegas Tourbillon to charity, which ended up selling for $ 220,000 to this man.  Then, with the release of Watch The Throne, the world heard him say “New Watch Alert: HUBLOT” (he can be seen wearing a Hublot Classic Fusion in the video). 

Then, over the summer we saw Jay wearing one of the coolest watches on this green earth, the incredible Richard Mille RM027 while sitting courtside at the US Open.  After that, we spotted a Rolex GMT gifted to an engineer on his Watch The Throne album with Kanye West.  And now, after Jay-Z’s historic two night gig at Carnegie Hall (all for charity, we might add), we have some new watch alerts, including one you may not expect…

Crafted from a quality French brand that specializes in leather, perfumery and luxury goods, Hermes watches are a popular accessory in the wardrobes of some of the world’s most notable names and fashion icons.

Chiara Ferragni, an Italian fashion blogger who has built an international fan base and caught attention from some of the industry’s most prominent designers through her fashion advice, was seen modeling the Hermes Kelly watch.

Heidi Montag, American media personality and singer, was also spotted wearing the Hermes Kelly watch while walking with her husband Spencer Pratt.

The Swiss luxury timepiece – inspired by and created as a tribute to the handbag that shares its name – features quartz movement, a gold-plated case with a white dial and a natural Epsom calfskin strap with white stitching. The watch is also available in a stainless steel case with a silvered or white dial and either a natural barenia double tour leather trap, smooth orange calfskin strap or Epsom calfskin strap in natural or black colors.

The Hermes Code Cod watch has also been seen on the wrist of several notable and well-known figures.

Isla Fisher, actress and star of Confessions of a Shopaholic, wore the elegant timepiece as an accessory to her character’s style in the film.

“It’s an orange Hermes watch and it sums up Becky Bloomwood – it’s playful, young and hip,” said Fisher.

The timepiece has also been worn by fashion stylist and designer Nini Nguyen, actress and singer Gwyneth Paltrow, actress Kelly Rutherford and actors Ashton Kutcher and Wentworth Miller.

Inspired by the anchor-shaped peninsula of Cape Cod, the Swiss-made Hermes Cape Cod luxury watch was created in 1991. The timepiece features quartz movement, a stainless steel case with a silvered dial and is available with a steel bracelet or variety of different colored straps.

Hermes is one of the world’s most famed luxury brands. Since 1837 when the brand was born as a Parisian saddle shop, Hermes products have been renowned for quality and innovation.

The French company first began creating clothing in the early 20th century and followed with the production of handbags shortly after. The luxury brand began rolling out men’s and women’s watches in the 1950s, including art deco and classic leather styles. During this time, vintage watch bracelets from Hermes were seen as some of the most fashionable women’s wristwatches to wear. In the contemporary world today, antique Hermes timepieces are valuable collector’s items.

Just as the quality luxury brand always has, Hermes continues to create fashionable, elegant and chic watches with a timeless design.

Movado is a brand most famous for its elegant style and innovative watch designs. It is known for taking risks, supporting the arts and usually being rewarded for doing so. Movado’s notoriety is mostly permeated, however, by the celebrities that are loyal to the brand.

The extensive list of celebs who are spotted sporting Movado watches begins, most recently, with Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush. He flaunted his BOLD chronograph Movado watch on the air this past May as a salute to the company’s success in watch-making.

The BOLD Collection, released in 2011, features a 42mm watch with a stainless steel case and an indigo blue sheen dial. It has a sophisticated black leather strap, and a built-in Swiss quartz movement.

Jayden Smith and Chris Benz were also spotted wearing Movado BOLD watches in this past year. The stylish teen sported his own BOLD watch at the Los Angeles premier of Justin Bieber’s, Never Say Never movie.

The always hilarious Joel McHale is also a known supporter of Movado. He wore the Movado Master, of Movado’s Master Collection, on his E! network show, The Soup, in July 2010. “The meticulously engineered and masterfully refined” Movado Master is both classy and avant-garde. Its porous strap gives it a comfortable feel, while its case design gives the watch an industrial look. It’s a fine piece of jewelry, and, of course, great for telling time.

Movado’s men’s watches are clearly a favorite among celebrities; however their women’s collections are equally praiseworthy. Award-winning actress Kerry Washington was spotted sporting two different Movado watches on separate occasions. She wore the diamond set Movado Fe Sta at the CDFA Fashion Awards, and the gorgeous Movado Bela at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Installation Luncheon.

The “fashionably slender” Movado Bela epitomizes feminine elegance. Its slim strap is made of shiny stainless steel, and its case is available with shimmering diamond accents. The bangle watch also features removable back links for a customized fit.

Uncle Kanye is starting a fashion line, but it won’t be called DW By Kanye.  We don’t know what it’ll be called, but we do know that no matter what Mr. West will name his line, or whatever he happens to be wearing, odds are, he’ll have something nice on his wrist. 

In the Otis video, Kanye was wearing a yellow gold Rolex, and in this pic above, we’ve spotten him wearing something even nicer.  The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar with skeletonized dial and movement in yellow gold is one very serious timepiece – serious to the tune of $ 136,500. This is probably the nicest watch we’ve seen on Chicago’s favorite son, and this watch in this execution is a favorite among serious collectors for the incredible ultra-thin perpetual movement, the open-worked dial, and the wearability of the great Royal Oak case.

The guys over at Watches In Movies spotted Mr. Tom Cruise wearing one of our favorite watches of last year, the Tudor Heritage Chronograph, in the new Mission Impossible flick.  Yup, Ethan Hunt himself is wearing a black dial Heritage Chrono ref 70330N.  Pretty, pretty cool.

We were hanging out with the fine folks at Agenhor over the weekend.  And, if you don’t know who Agenhor is, you should.  They are the module makers who have brought some of the most beautiful timepieces in recent memory to life.  Think MB&F HM2 and HM3, the award-winning Hermes Acreau Le Temps Suspendu, pretty much everything Milus has ever made, The Harry Winston Opus IX, several perpetual calendars from many big brands whose spot we choose to not blow up, and the beautiful poetic complications from Van Cleef & Arpels, among many others.

Jean-Marc Wiederrecht is the founder and owner of Agenhor, and the 2007 watchmaker of the year is considered by many to be one of the most creative engineers in the field.  After all, Le Temps Suspendu is built on an ETA 2892 and it does what it does. The MB&F’s are built on basic Girard-Perregaux movements, and, well, they are literally otherwordly. 

We were curious what watch Mr. Wiederrect himself wears, so we asked him to pull up his sleeves.  His watch of choice is a Van Cleef & Arpels Midnight Over Paris, a watch Agenhor built last year atop a Jaeger-LeCoultre base to show the night sky over Paris every day of the year.  The celestial disc that acts as a dial rotates one full cycle every 365.25 days, providing a perfectly accurate reprsentation of the Paris sky.  Setting the watch takes place via an officer’s style caseback where the months of the year are displayed – this dial, whish is key turned, also acts a date display.  The movement also happens to be set in meteorite, too.
