Ikepod KAWS Watch: “X” Marks the Spot

Many watch owners like to think of their timepieces as works of art, but when watch manufacturers team up with a renowned artist like KAWS to produce the Ikepod KAWS Watch, the final product is truly a masterpiece. KAWS, a New York artist known for his cartoons and limited edition toys launches himself into the world of luxury watches with aplomb.
The watch is unconventional to say the least, but certainly an eye-catcher. The smooth, minimalist design makes the bright red dial pop against the strong gray and black geometric shapes. For those who don’t like seeing red, the watch is offered in four versions ranging from light gray to all black.
The watch hands crisscross across the center of the watch, making for an unconventional—if difficult to read—image. At least the hour hand is marked with a small semicircle on its tip to differentiate it from the minute hand. Each index is marked by a half-circle, making the differences in time distinct. The semicircles are meant to bring to mind the teeth of KAWS characters.
Perhaps what is most entrancing about this watch is its use of layers to create a subtle—yet intriguing—visual display. The watch layers the slightly thickened semi-circle indices over the dial to create depth while the watch hands themselves rest high enough above the dial to cast a slight shadow on the dial.
The Ikepod is engraved onto the crystal dial window, dark enough that its shadow projects onto the red dial. The bezel is rests just a few fractions of an inch above the glass, but it continues to add to the visual depth of the piece.
The smooth textures of the watch only add to the feeling of the depth of the timepiece—the juxtaposition of the flat materials only creates a greater impact to the layered effect of the watch. The plan of the watch uses the materials to complement the whimsical design perfectly and only enhances the features of each.
The watch combines the playfulness of KAWS style with all the accoutrements of high-end technology and luxury materials. The 44mm pebble-style case is titanium and water resistant up to 50m. The rubber strap ensures comfort and adds to the casual chic of the timepiece.
