Some watches today seem to focus on gaudy embellishments or gimmicks to draw in buyers, but the Victorinox Swiss Army AirBoss Mach 8 Special Edition Watch let its functionality sell the timepiece. Where some watches are barely readable and pride design before punctuality, the AirBoss Mach 8 provides a timely tool with precise mechanics.

Victorinox has spent a long time in the business of making reliable products that can survive even the harshest of conditions. Best known for creating the first Swiss Army Knife in 1987, the company has continued to expand their success into many other tools, including watches.
Named after and for the “air boss” on aircraft, the watch refers to the coordinator on the flight deck of a naval aircraft carrier. Air bosses have a long history of requiring extraordinarily accurate watches to properly calculate travel times and fuel percentages and to coordinate planes landing and launching off the ship.

As such, the watch features dozens of useful features and a dedication to precision measurements to ensure that even an air boss will have the ship running as smoothly as the mechanics on the watch.
This watch is a playground of features—it’s practically a Swiss Army Knife in itself (without the toothpick). With luminescent hands and dot markers, a bi-directional rotating bezel with 60 minute drive scale, date window, automatic movement, and chronograph features, this watch is ready to survive your own daily battleground in style.
The function includes minutes, seconds, and tenths of a second and all the chronograph dials are easily distinguishable on the dial thanks to their luminescent coating. All the numbers are large and clearly marked on the black dial. The chronograph is doubly useful in that uses a startup button at the 8 o’clock position, making it easier to engage the stop/start functions.

The timepiece is as durable as it is tricked out: the antiglare sapphire crystal dial window, stainless steel case, and water resistance of up to 100 meters/330 feet make this watch ready to survive the elements.
The black cowhide strap with contrasting stitching keeps this watch comfy as well as stylish, while the clear numbers make the watch very easy to read in a variety of adverse conditions.
For those who are looking for a functional watch, extraordinary precision, and a price tag that won’t cost you an arm and a leg, the Victorinox Swiss Army AirBoss Mach 8 Special Edition watch is a great addition to your arsenal of tools.

A vintage look but the same timeless quality and craftsmanship is unveiled in the new Panerai Radiomir 1940 and the Radiomir 1940 Oro Rosso. Released at the SIHH watch fair in Geneva, the Special Edition watches speak classic style and tradition.

Panerai, founded in 1860 by Giovanni Panerai, began with a small watchmaker’s shop in Florence, Italy. It was his grandson that took the business to new heights with high precision mechanisms. Not long thereafter, Panerai became the official supplier to the Italian Navy for underwater missions. The navy was looking for a reliable and water tight instrument. Panerai was able to deliver. The company began equipping the navy with precision instruments, wrist compasses and wrist depth gauges. With such an endorsement, recognition of the Panerai brand flourished.

Panerai Radiomir 1940 Oro Rosso

Panerai Radiomir 1940 Oro Rosso

The Panerai Radiomir 1940 Special Edition timepieces were inspired by their 1930s predecessor and incorporate some of the same traditional features such as:

  • 1940s distinctive case formed out of the same block of steel as the case itself
  • Classic case size of 47mm in diameter
  • Plexiglas crystal which protects the dial, bezel, crown and screw back

The differing features on the two watches are characterized by the dial colors. The Radiomir 1940 dial consists of stainless steel with a polished finish and comes in black. The Radiomir 1940 Oro Rosso comes in brown with a red gold dial. The red gold color is achieved through a special alloy high in copper. A small dose of platinum prevents oxidation. The matching alligator strap and polished red gold buckle create an overall smooth blend of tones and richness.

Both Radiomir Special Editions come with clear sapphire crystal case backs which allow viewing of the OPXVII hand-wound mechanical movement. The watch dials are easy to read with their luminous Arabic numerals and hour markers. The power reserve is 55 hours and both watches are water-resistant (of course) to 30 meters.

Unfortunately, the Radiomir 1940 models are limited editions of 100 units each, a very small number. Panerai produced 50 sets of the two watches. They are packaged in a special box which contains the two models with the same millesime numbering.

Panerai has continued their tradition of releasing timepieces that speak of quality, elegance and precision. The history of the brand is rich with new innovations and discoveries. Panerai has taken that craftsmanship and molded it into a style that is vintage yet still fashionable in today’s world.

James Bond with Omega Watch

Daniel Craig as James Bond with an Omega watch

The James Bond film series will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year. To honor the British spy and his escapades, Swiss luxury watch brand Omega is releasing a special edition of its prized Seamaster Diver 300m, a timepiece Agent 007 has worn in the films since GoldenEye.

The newest addition to the Seamaster series will be available in two sizes, 41 mm for men and 36.25 mm for women. There will be a repetitive 007 monogram on the lacquered black dial, and the ceramic outer bezel rings feature the number 50 filled in with red. The rest of the grey outer ring displays the minutes in a 10-minute interval pattern with white enamel. White dots on the inner ring point out hours, and the geometric hands flit across hours and minutes. By contrast, the red seconds arm is thin and quite the opposite of all the shapes on the dial.

Each version of the watch screw-and-pin bracelets and their cases are made of stainless steel, and both watches are also certified chronometers. While the 41 mm watch has 11 applied indexes, the 36.25 mm women’s watch has 10 with a diamond marker at the 7 o’clock position. This special marking signifies the creation of the watch honor Agent 007, and also adds a touch of femininity.

Stamped with a gun-barrel design, the back of the watch continues to reflect the aesthetics of James Bond. The winding rotor is in the shape of a bullet and can be viewed through a sapphire crystal. The watch is water resistant up to 300 meters and showcases Omega’s revolutionary caliber 2507 self-winding, co-axial movement. Released in 1999, this component of Omega’s watches has since driven a revolution in mechanical watchmaking. A particularly advanced feature of the watch, the helium escape valve, should appeal to professional divers, as this is necessary for divers working with diving bells.

Although James Bond is a fictional character, he still represents quite the ambassador to the Omega brand. The James Bond 007 50th Anniversary Collector’s Piece, created in his honor, duly parallels the spy’s timeless sophistication. Take note that only 11,007 of the 41 mm version and 3,007 of the 36.25 mm version will be produced, as these watches are truly a limited edition. Look out for these classic timepieces as well as 23rd film in the James Bond franchise, Skyfall, coming out later this year.

The first Grammy Awards was held on May 4, 1959. For the 2012 Awards, there are 78 categories in which artists can be nominated. Works that were produced between September 1, 2010, and September 30, 2011 are eligible for this year’s Grammy Awards.

The Special Edition I-GUCCI

Gucci's special edition Grammy watch, the I-GUCCI

The Gucci Grammy Special Edition watch was designed by Gucci’s creative director Frida Giannini. This special edition watch is unique in that it is Gucci’s first-ever digital timepiece. Named the I-GUCCI, the watch features the ability to show either two time zones or switch to showing digital hands with the local time. The watch comes with a special tag commemorating the Grammy partnership, as well as featuring the Grammy logo on the strap. The partnership between Gucci and the Grammy Awards is a three-year one, and continues Gucci’s commitment to the preservation of the arts that started with the brand’s partnership with Martin Scorsese’s The Film Foundation. The partnership with the Grammy Awards will support the programs of the Grammy Museum.

If you are a music aficionado who is looking to purchase a new timepiece, Gucci and the Grammy Awards have made it easy to support both industries. With the special edition I-GUCCI, you get both a high-end, fashionable watch that also supports the preservation of the music industry.
