Great vintage watches from Audemars Piguet do not come up for sale often. They are rarer than vintage Vacherons or Pateks, especially in modern sizes and aesthetics. There are a few vintage AP’s that do well at auction – obviously the early Royal Oaks (we’ll get to chose later today) – but also the traditional chronographs like this that pulled down $ 386,000 and this triple-date moonphase chrono that made almost $ 90,000. Next month, there is a great chance to buy some really special watches from Audemars Piguet that date to the brand’s formative years, and are unlike the watches offered from them today.
Below, we take a look at five vintage AP’s coming up for sale in May from Antiquorum and Christie’s, and there is not a single hexagonal screw in sight.
Especially the two display technologies used by Hublot and Tissot are worth a look. For a full report on this year’s dive watches at Baselworld, please check out rruegger.blogspot.com
Some very quick & dirty impressions put together from today’s press day in Basel, focus lies (of course) mostly on some of the dive watches shown. Note: Not all novelties were displayed during that day.
German manufacture NOMOS added two new models to their popular Zurich line this week at Basel, the Zurich “Blaugold” and “Braungold.” Changes are limited to the dials of these watches, as you’ll find the same lovely epsilon movement within. The addition of color goes a long way here, and NOMOS fans will undoubtedly appreciate the additions as they add to an already colorful past for the brand.
There were no new calibers from the brand this year, though we are assured development is underway and we can expect to see something next year, perhaps a new complication.
We got our hands on the new Zurich models today so check out more live pics after the break. Pricing for both is 2960 Euros.
As many of you know, SIHH 2012 official opened today and there’s always tons of beautiful new timepieces to drool over at this time of year. With Basel just around the corner as well, its probably the most exciting time to be a WIS!
This year IWC brings some new Pilot watches to the table. Its been a while since IWC has done something creative with their Pilot’s watches, with the last big introduction being the Big Pilot a couple years back. A few of this years offerings are the IWC Big Pilot Top Gun Miramar 7 Day and Chronograph, and the Pilot Worldtimer.
The Top Gun Miramar watches are very cool. Both measure an imposing 48mm in diameter!! In beautiful Ceramic cases with Titanium case backs. Both feature in-house movements, with the Chronograph model showcasing the new Calibre 89365 Flyback Chronograph, and the 7 Day movement using the 51111 movement with Pelaton winding system.
The Pilot Worldtimer features a large 45mm steel case, and a new 24 hour timing system that allows you to see the time in 24 different timezones at the same time! Reminds me of my Seiko World Time clock in my office, but in Watch form. Very cool, and very useful for those that travel everywhere.
Overall a nice few offerings that caught my eye from SIHH 2012.
i am wondering if the military accepts these and if they will or wont make fun of you , of not only these but like any stuff that famlies bring you. does the military accept b-ball shorts, watches, shoes, pictures, money, and some other stuff unlikely like portable devices like mp3/cd’s , portable games, magazines etc. i am just wondering i know these stuff are really unlikely but just to make sure. theres nothin wrong with asking and knowing…….

Answer by Book0602 When my son signed up and went to basic, the only thing he could bring was himself. Once he was there we could send pictures, etc. When he went to Iraq you sent anything that was legal there (no pork, no booze) and that you knew could survive the sand. Ask your recruiter or commanding officer.
I’m talking Marines btw.
How is wealth ultimately created? Would it matter whether one spent a dollar on bus fare, or a luxury watch? Or is the answer simply dependent upon which contributes more to overall investment in new technologies, efficiency, etc. (whatever drives wealth creation) – and this could be consumer spending or business resources.
Best answer:
Answer by simplicitus Yes it matters, but not as much as spending vs. not spending, especially as you are referring to consumer spending.
For example, government spending on military hardware creates much less economic growth, both in the short term and the long term, than money spent on schools and education.
All other things being equal, money spent on services and on labor intensive goods has a higher multiplier effect than money spent on capital intensive goods such as cars and electronics. It is also the case that goods with higher local content have a higher multiplier effect than goods with lower local content.
Thus, for a government wanting to stimulate the economy, it matters how it does so. Simple tax cuts for the rich (1.03) and payroll tax cuts for corporations have less stimulus value (1.29) than increasing foodstamps (1.73) and extending unemployment benefits (1.64).
