Ask most guys under the age of 50 if they’d wear a skeleton watch, and they’d say “No f’n way.”  The reason for that is, up until recently, most were relegated to regal, almost faux opulent designs that were just a little too ornate, a little too “blingy” in the most upper eastside-y / Purdy sort of way.

Then came the Openworked Royal Oak (ref 15305) from AP and the Altiplano Skeleton from Piaget, which we showed you first here.  These two watches are the best examples of the new type of skeletonized watches – the types of openworking that is less dandy / ornate and more manly / industrial.  At SIHH and while visiting Piaget with our contest winner, we got a chance to go hands-on with this awesome new skeletonitzed Altiplano.

While you probably expected the first Basel World Harry Winston post to be about Opus 12, the follow-up to this bad boy, it’s not.  You see, that one is going to take some time think about before we share our thoughts on it.  And, there was actually is another piece from Harry Winston that really caught our eye when we visited their booth just a few hours ago.

The Midnight collection from HW is the most classical and refined of all HW men’s watches, and today we say what will be the most “technical” and “watchy” model of the line, and a piece that serious watch guys are going to love.  It is a fully skeletonized time-only watch, and it is really beautiful.  The open-work on this guy is really lovely, and shows off what we can expect from the budding Winston line in years to come – they are going to be a very serious player down the road.

For the skeletonized Midnight, Winston chose to use a micro-rotor so allow for more open viewing of the movement, and the watch looks really great from both front and back.  It will be available in both white and rose gold, with prices, specs, and official images to come.

No, your eyes do not deceive you. The same brand that brought you this is now showing, for the first time ever, an extra-thin watch! The announcement from Hublot came out today that they would be expanding their Classic Fusion line to include the extra-thin skeletons you see above.

The Classic Fusion Extra-Thin Skeleton will be available in a LE of 1000 pieces in titanium and 500 pieces in gold.  They are sized at 45mm and feature a brand new movement, the HUB1300 hand-wound, that is only 2.9mm thick, with a power reserve of 90 hours. The skeletonized movement has a sub-seconds at 7 o’clock and this wath, apparently, has hands that are designed with the original Hublots in mind.

No word on pricing but we do have lives pics below courtesy of Hublot Nation, so check em out.

The Santos-Dumont is a classic on the Cartier line-up, and the skeleton is something of cult favorite among collectors.  The deco numerals cut right into the structure of the watch are artfully done – in fact, the roman numerals are actually formed by the skeletonized bridges of the movement – and to see the Cartier calibre 9614 MC fully exposed in all its glory is really an impressive sight.  This year, the Santos-Dumont Skeleton is introduced in pink gold for the first time and the result is just stunning.

Each pink gold Santos-Dumont Skeleton will be individually numbered and retail for $ 47,000.
