Chopard first introduced the L.U.C Lunar One in 2005, bringing a perpetual calendar moon phase into the brand’s range-toping collection bearing the initials of the company’s founder, Louis-Ulysse Chopard. For Baselworld 2012, the watch receives a decidedly contemporary update, and leads the way for a new aesthetic to the rest of the L.U.C collection. A welcome change, if only skin-deep.

The new dial features a cleaner arrangement of the complications while retaining healthy portion of the watches original charm, including the big date display at 12 o’clock. The most prominent element is the new orbital moon phase display, which rotates around the small seconds axis. The module powering the complication keeps it accurate to within one day every 122 years. The design of the display makes it the focal point of this dial and really makes it one of the more interesting applications of a moon phase we’ve seen this side of Stepan Sarpaneva.

The new Lunar One has grown slightly in the new model, to a reasonable 43mm x 11.47mm. Inside is the same base caliber seen in the older models, the L.U.C 96QP with updated modules for annual calendar and moon phase. Check out some of our live pics from Basel below.

The Jetway Sport Black Ceramic Combo may be the watch of choice for the buyer that is slightly more concerned with the elegance of simplicity. Michele aligns a jet black backdrop to timepiece’s pearl center, immediately bringing forth a suave feeling. A sunray dial leave a perfect accent to the watch, imbuing it with a unique personality that undoubtedly will catch more than just glances. Philip Stein Luxury Watches

Desperate for some shut-eye? Try a Philip Stein Watch

Written by: Holly Troupe

According to a study published in the Sleep Diagnosis and Therapy medical journal, the Natural Frequency Technology (NFT) embedded in Philip Stein watches may assist in improving sleep quality. The study offers the first clinical evidence linking NFT with sleep improvement.

The double blind study, authored by sleep specialist Michael J. Breus, was performed on 28 healthy participants (20 female; 8 male) who typically experience restless or un-refreshing sleep. The study found that participants who wore Philip Stein watches felt more refreshed, had more pleasant dreams and fell asleep faster.

The conclusion did not come as a surprise to President and Co-Founder Will Stein. “These results provide the clinical evidence to support what we have known and heard from our clients all along – that the Natural Frequency Technology found in Philip Stein watches, enhance people’s overall well-being and promote better sleep,” he said. “To have these results published in a scientific journal is further validation of the testimonials we hear regularly.”

NFT involves the practice of harmonizing Earth’s natural frequencies with those produced by the human body. The result is said to be relaxation, better focus and overall well-being.

Natural Frequency harmonizing watches are some of Oprah's favorite things

The study results were put to the test by Sam Hopkins in an article in the Financial Times. “When I heard about Philip Stein’s Active watches, which are not just designed to decorate the wrists of captains of industry but to help said captains sleep, I was skeptical,” he said, and added that he didn’t notice a difference on the first night of his trial. On his second night, however, “Very peaceful night. [Dreamt] about horses, being out in mountains with boys.” Hopkins said he experienced similar results for the rest of the week.

Philip Stein watches have long been the accessories of choice for numerous celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey, who has it on her list of “Favorite Things.” O Magazine staffers also reap the benefits of Philip Stein watches. “Right here at O, The Oprah Magazine, a colleague who tried it swore that after two weeks, her chronic knee pain disappeared,” said Charlotte Druckman in O Magazine.

In addition to its sleep improving properties, Sam Hopkins noticed other benefits to Philip Stein watches. “The watch definitely works as a talking point,” he said. “When I told a colleague about its hidden powers, we had an interesting conversation about style and alternative medicine – topics we’ve never discussed before. It’s kind of cool to have a watch that does something extra.”

Rickie Folwer is a pretty good golfer.  In fact, he was the number one amateur in the world in 2007 and 2008.  Since joining the PGA, he’s had a very solid run and was the youngest American to play on the Ryder Cup team at the age of 21.  He also tied for 5th at the 2011 British Open.

So, Fowler is just 23 years of age (he was born in 1988! that sounds young, even to us) and he’s already got a substantial Rolex collection.  He is, of course, sponsored by Rolex, so that helps, but he’s got a Datejust, three Milgausses, two Subs One Sub, One Deep Sea, and one Daytona.  Not bad, not bad at all!

PS – Did you guys notice that all the watches are set, which means he must be wearing them all with some regularity or keeping them on a winder?

Bremont showed us their marine chronometer, the B1 Marine Clock last year around this time.  But, in Monaco last week, they showed a unique Marine clock that, on top of featuring improved specs like a water-tight case and simpler setting options, was actually hand-painted by Ronnie Wood.  Yup, the same Ronnie Wood that started his career with the Byrds and ended up playing with the Stones.

But, having Wood paint this clock isn’t as random as one may assume – Wood is actually a fairly accomplished artist and even trained at Ealing Art College.  No word on pricing or availability, but interesting none the less.

Talk about great timing. Audemars Piguet announced just two weeks ago that Novak Djokovic would be joining its stable of ambassadors.  Then yesterday, Novak beat Rafa Nadal in the US Open finals ending one of the most impressive years in tennis by any player, ever.  And when we won? We strapped on that AP just like he should.

As you can see above, Novak’s watch of choice is the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver, a watch Jason reviewed in detail here.

This win plus Rory’s title at the other US Open marks a big year for AP ambassadors.  So, the question remains, will we see a prototype Royal Oak tennis watch next?

The story of 94 year old Charles Woehrle, a former prisoner of war and proud Patek Philippe owner, captured the attention of the media last month when he made an appearance on NBC’s Today show to tell of how he had ordered a Patek wristwatch while imprisoned during the second world war, how much joy the watch brought him, and then sadly, how the watch had been stolen from him years later back in the US.  His niece, Louise, was making a film on her uncle’s time in prison camp and contacted Patek Philippe about his story.  Patek tracked down a watch very similar to the one he had worn and lost, and presented it to him.  The result was an article in the NY Times and a fabulous human interest story.

We wanted to know more, like what exactly was the watch that he lost and what exactly had Patek replaced it with.  Today show host Lester Holt made the misstep of calling Woehrle’s new piece a “replica” – had Patek recreated one like the original? It didn’t seem likely.  So, we sent Jason to Mr. Woehrle’s home to hear from the man himself.  Here you have the details of what type of watch Woehrle had worn during his time in Stalag Luft III, what type of Patek he has been given, how Patek sourced that watch, and a wonderful look at an interesting and charming man.

Chris Wears a Raymond Weil Statement Watch to Grammy Awards

Raymond Weil hasn’t become one of the hottest watch designers in the industry by quietly sitting on the sidelines.  They are building an empire, by aligning themselves with high profile individuals, in all fields of celebrity.  Earlier this year, their designs showed up at one of the most high profile events of the year, the 2010 Grammy Awards. At this event, the some of the world’s most influential people in entertainment come together, and you can catch glimpses of many eye-catching pieces of jewelry, as well as watches.

Chris Harrison, host of the huge ABC hit, “The Bachelor and Bachelorette” was spotted walking the red carpet wearing a Raymond Weil Nabucco Chronograph men’s watch.  This watch is hard to miss.  It is large and commanding.  While it is set on a polished bracelet, the Nabucco Chronograph is definitely no one’s first choice for a dress event.  If it weren’t for the edginess of the Grammy’s, this watch may not have been a hit, but Chris matched it with a pinstriped suit and no tie…it worked.

The Raymond Weil Nabucco Chronograph is extremely contemporary and stylish.  It offers impressive technical performance, which can’t be beat.  It makes a strong statement, which may be why Chris chose it.
