For a watch company, being named an official timekeeper of an athletic event is considered an honor. These events rely on accurate times for the athletes participating. The Seiko watch company has the distinction of being the official timekeeper of an unusual kind: that of a video game. Seiko is the official timekeeper of the the video game series “Gran Turismo”, a racing simulation.

Seiko is a Japanese watch company founded in 1881 in Tokyo. Kintaro Hattori, the founder, started selling clocks in 1892 after having opened his watch and jewelry shop earlier. The first Seiko watches were made in 1924. The Seiko corporation has had many “firsts” in its watch making history, including producing the world’s first quartz watch and the first quartz chronograph.

Seiko and Gran Turismo

Seiko is the official timekeeper of the Gran Turismo video games.

“Gran Turismo” is a series of racing games for the PlayStation. The series is produced by Polyphony Digital and the first title in the series appeared in 1997. The games are designed to be a racing simulation. One of the appeals of the game series is the number of licensed vehicles that look like their real world counterparts. Players may play in an arcade mode or in a simulation mode, including the ability to race online against other players. Players can earn credits throughout the game and they can then be used to purchase upgrades to vehicles or buy new vehicles and add to their collection.

This partnership between Seiko watches and the “Gran Turismo” racing series allows the iconic Japanese watchmaker to have an important role within one of the world’s best known video games. This speaks to Seiko watches’ reliability, not only in the “real” world, but also as it translates to the virtual world of video games. Seiko’s status as Gran Turismo’s official timekeeper truly is a unique one.

Watches In TV Series

Watches in TV series, we all know you have been trying to identify Jerry Seinfeld’s Breitling (or Cartier), Kim Kardashian’s AP Royal Oak (or Scott Disick’s), Dexter’s Timex, Charlie’s Rolex Yacht-Master and Tony Soprano’s Rolex Day-Date. And although Don Draper wore a Rolex Explorer in HBO’s Mad Men TV series, Jaeger-LeCoultre recently released a Mad Men special ‘Mad about Reverso’ that features a Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce logo engraved in the reversible back side of the watch. So it seems that watch manufacturers are pretty aware of the fact that you are eagle eyeing the watches in TV shows.

Was this always the case? One of our avid readers – Johan – sent us a screen shot of the second part of A-Team’s pilot episode Mexican Slayride from 1983. Tim Dunigan plays ‘Faceman’ instead of Dirk Benedict  (who started from the 3rd episode) and wears an OMEGA Geneve f300Hz (tuning fork model), which – I guess – was already out of production by that time.

Lt. Templeton ‘Faceman’ Peck next to Sgt. Bosco Albert ‘B.A.’ Baracus. Faceman is setting the watch on the next picture.

I am pretty sure that the watch featured in A-Team wasn’t sponsored by OMEGA or a jeweler. The same goes for a German 1980s and 1990s krimi called Derrick. Inspector Derrick always wore a fine watch (Rolex and in some occasions an IWC DaVinci). We did a special report on Derrick and his watches in 2005 already, click here to read it. I am not sure whether this TV show (with +180 episodes) aired outside Europe though. I am convinced that Inspector Derrick (Horst Tappert) was wearing Rolex watches from his personal collection.

Another famous TV show from back in the days is Miami Vice. Although Don Johnson is well known for wearing a (fake) gold Rolex Day-Date, he also wore an Ebel 1911 chronograph with a Zenith El Primero movement. In gold/steel of course, that’s how they rolled in the 1980s. Sponsored? I don’t think so. To demonstrate how these things change during the years, The Miami Vice movie that was done just a few years ago though, had IWC watches all over the place and was clearly sponsored.

Is this product placement a bad thing? Of course not! Times are just changing and people pay attention to these details. Watch brands can exaggerate a bit, but in the case of Jaeger-LeCoulte and their Mad Men special (restricted to 25 pieces only, to be released in February), this isn’t the case. They didn’t overdo it. Although I have seen all episodes, I did not spot a JLC Reverso though, but I am assured it was in there.

Although watches in movies have been covered a lot on various websites and watch forums, it seems that information about watches in TV Series are a bit scattered. Luckily, the guys from the Watches in Movies website have a special section for TV shows.

“Thanks to the stunning work of our R&D team, TAG Heuer will set once more a milestone in the history of watch making,” is what is to be expected with the new Formula 1 series that is to be launched in Geneva January 16.

The first series of Formula 1 was created back in ’85 when Heuer was joined with Techniques d’Avant Garde (“TAG”).  Heuer was dealing with disaster after disaster while trying to make it in the watch industry. With the combination of the two, they became one of the biggest names in Swiss watches.

The first generation F1 watches were designed by Eddy Burgener and used an innovative case construction; a mixture of a stainless steel inner case coated with Fiberglass.

Despite the success of the Formula 1, the series was to discontinue back in 2000.  It wasn’t because people weren’t buying the piece; the company thought the style and design was no longer the latest fashion in watches.  Out with the old in and with the new is what the company was getting at with this decision.

After a 4 year break, the Formula 1 returned to the public with an entirely new design and upgraded materials. The series had an entirely new look, but what did not change was the shape of the case and bezel.  Both are similar to the original Formula 1 pieces.  The Series 3 Formula 1 has a 40mm case, which is a more up-to date size compared to the previous versions that were only 34mm.

The watch was for the man how worked 9-5 in the office and on the weekends hit the mountain for some biking or skiing.  It was modern, trendy, and youthful.  Exactly how the company wanted the public to think of them.

20 different designs are in the new Formula 1 series, all are going to be launched this year at the watch show in Geneva.  All have a broad range of bezels, including brushed stainless steel, aluminum, ceramic and titanium-carbide. Things to look for on the piece are titanium-carbide “Full Black” stealth Formula 1 and for the first time ever in the series, there is both ceramic and steel version to choose from.

A simpler brushed stainless steel guard has replaced the titanium-carbide from past models, yet the new addition as the similar design as previous pieces. The design of the button at the end of the spindle, or the crown, was taken from the Grand Carrera series. So regardless of the new additions the piece can still be recognized by Formula 1 lovers.

Jean Christopher Babin, president and CEO of TAG Heuer, is promising a game-changing new regulator, breaking all high- frequency records. All there is to do now is to wait and see what happens in Geneva.

New year, very new watches. Invicta‘s 2012 series watches are breaking the mold with designs quite like no other.

As a part of the Russian Diver Collection, Invicta has partnered with contemporary artists to design watch faces.

Native New Yorker, Erni Vales, and British artist, Nick Gentry, are commandeering this limited edition series by introducing a wave of novel looks for the watch company. These two artists collaborated in 2011, creating designs that are trendy and appealing to a younger audience.

Vales created 3 of his own timepieces for the 2012 series. All three watches have a colorful retro look, and a similar cartoon bear design on the watch dial.

Panda Suit

Invicta's Panda Suit timepiece.

They are called Lace Twin, Leather Twin and Panda Suit; and they are certainly not “suit and tie” watches. These contemporary timepieces have industrial-looking straps that are juxtaposed by their brightly colored watch faces and cartoon bears.

Lace Twin, Leather Twin and Panda Suit take a new spin on watches. They give them a third meaning. Not only can watches be for telling time or looking nice, but they can also have an artistic appeal. They can tell a story, or be a conversation piece.

Erni Vales’ timepieces are not made for the mundane businessman. They’re made for the skateboarder, rave-goer and modern art junkie. A whole new concept in watches.

Breaking the mold, so to speak, comes with no surprise from an artist who started out tagging on the subway cars of NYC. His work, now based out of Miami, is called “Evil World.”

Nick Gentry provides an equally novel contribution to Invicta’s contemporary art series.

Gentry is fascinated with the cyber culture of the 21st Century. He is well known in the contemporary art world for his floppy disk art – creating human faces out of a compilation of floppy disks. His bold artistic messages have gained Gentry the highest level of respect in the United Kingdom’s urban art scene.

Gentry designed one very sleek watch for Invicta. Taking the namesake of one of his paintings, The Secret Key Invicta watch is super classy and unusual.

Its watch dial is an interesting piece of art, and its case is rectangular and slightly arched.

The combination of its sleek leather strap and artistic interior will, perhaps, give this timepiece a broader audience.

Invicta’s art series introduces an exciting and refreshing look at watches, just in time for 2012.
