sbpp003 power design project chronograph Seiko Power Design Chronograph SBPP003/SBPP001 Watch

Each year Seiko holds a contest called the Power Design Project. I don’t know all the details, but I believe it involves a contest among Seiko designers (and maybe other designers as well) in Japan to design cool new concept watches. Often times, many of the designs are very sober and classic – less wildly futuristic. Seiko actually produces some of the winning designs each year. Most of these pieces are limited in production and only sold in Japan, but you can get them online.

One of my favorite Power Design Project watch models from the last few years that was actually produced is this Ref. SBPP003 (white dial) or SBP001 (black dial). It looks like a combo between a sport Seiko, Tag Heuer Carrera, and an Omega Speedmaster. It is quite thin at about 10mm thick, and 40mm wide (in steel).

The dial comes in black or white – each matched to a black bezel. The piece is handsome and easy to like. Nothing wild here, save for a nicely polished design with both modern and vintage looking accents. I really do like the bracelet. Seiko is known to have the competence to make fantastic bracelets for relatively low priced watches.

Inside the SBPP001/3 watch is a Seiko 7T62 quartz movement. Basic, but highly effective and used in a healthy number of watches. The movement has the time, date, 60 minute chronograph, and an alarm. The lower subsidiary seconds dial is where you set the alarm. Though it is all includes in a nicely organized fashion. The hands and applied hour markers have lume. Little touches like the polished rings around the subdials help this watch be a winner. Don’t forget to always look out for Seiko Power Design Project watches for interesting, good-looking watches at relatively reasonable prices. The SBPP003 and SBPP001 watches are gonna cost about $ 450 at the current yen/dollar conversion rate.

These images are mostly from Keiya Japan, where I think you can actually get the watches.

One of the more impressive watches to come out of Basel this year came not from the quiet cantons of Switzerland, but rather from none other than the quintessential Japanese brand, Seiko.

The Seiko Astron is a Solar GPS watch and takes its name from the Seiko Astron of 1969, the worlds first quartz watch (which got a very cool reissue recently) . Invoking the Astron name isn’t (just) convenient marketing on Seiko’s behalf; the Astron of 2012 is a worthy successor to its groundbreaking namesake.

What makes this watch special is a low energy GPS receiver that means that this watch can talk to GPS satellites to determine the time and date on its own. The receiver in the watch gets a signal from at least 4 satellites to accurately update the time, one a day, and in every timezone on earth. How this works in the real world is the really cool part. You step off a plane, hit the button and in about six seconds your watch will have synchronised the time from satellites (the indicator at 10 tells you how many). Once it’s worked out the time, it will take another 30 seconds to automatically adjust the time for you. It’s easy to see why this watch would be a boon for jetsetting types.

Ten years ago, Seiko introduced a GMT model into their high end Grand Seiko range. The watch has gone on to become one the most successful and recognizable models for the sometimes misunderstood side of the brand. This year at Basel, Seiko introduced 2 limited edition Grand Seiko GMTs to celebrate the anniversary, each adorning heavy doses of the brands traditional blue both front and back.

Both watches share the same 9S66 caliber as found in the old model, but beyond that they begin to differ. Ref. SBGM029 is offered with a stainless steel case and measures in at 39.2mm in diameter. It also sports an exterior 24hr bezel quite reminiscent of a certain other famous GMT. Ref. SBGM031 is offered on a crocodile strap and comes in a tad larger at 39.5mm in diameter. This reference also sees the 24hr GMT ring moved to the inner dial, where it can be found on the older models. Both are offered with very dark blue dials, and in most light will appear black.

Both of the watches have see-through case backs, which exhibit the same blue titanium/tungsten rotor, emblazoned with the Grand Seiko Lion. This rotor is a new feature for the movement, and delivers a hefty advantage in performance according to Seiko. It has high elasticity which absorbs vibration and shock “ten times better” than brass. Either way, it adds a sharp touch of detail to the watch and fits nicely into its Japanese personality.

The watch on bracelet is limited to 700 pieces and is priced at $ 6,700. On the croc step the watch is limited to 1,000 pieces and is priced at $ 6,300. Considering the price of a new orange hand from Rolex, these watches represent a great value. Look for them later this year at your nearest Grand Seiko dealer. More pics after the jump.

The Swiss aren’t the only ones launching new watches right now, Japanese super brand Seiko has announced a new GPS enabled watch called The Astron. Seiko devotees will note that the Astron is the same name given by Seiko to the first quartz watch ever made, circa 1969. The new Astron is definitely a technological flagship for Seiko as it features both GPS and solar charging. The Astron’s 7×52 quartz caliber will connect to no less than four GPS satellites and will both sync the time AND correct the timezone for your current location. Seiko says the Astron knows all 39 of the world’s timezones and can, at the press of a button, sync the time (takes ~6 seconds) and the current timezone based on location data from the Astron’s GPS connection (this takes ~30 seconds). There is no delicate way to put this, the Astron looks freaking amazing – see for yourself:

  • 47 x 16.5 mm case
  • High intensity titanium or stainless steel options
  • Titanium model weighs only 135g
  • Solar powered, no battery changes
  • Perpetual calendar (accurate to February 2100)
  • Dual time sub-dial
  • Ceramic bezels (standard on all models)
  • Sapphire crystal with Seiko’s own AR coating
  • Non-synced accuracy of +/- 15s per month
  • Titanium bracelet or silicone strap
  • 100m Water resistant (330 ft, 10 bar)
  • Priced from  ¥152 250 –  ¥210 000 (~$ 1880 – 2600 USD)

That is a complete feature set for Seiko’s first step into the GPS ring and pricing and practicality seem to be greatly improved over the Citizen Satellite Wave (990 unit limited edition, $ 3800 USD). The Astron looks good too, like an upgraded Casio Oceanus and we really like that the styling is relatively reserved and still offers a second timezone display (essential feature on a travelers watch). With four models offering high intensity titanium or stainless steel, “hard black” coatings (dlc?) and ceramic bezels, Seiko has designed a watch that will be bought and worn. See their press release here.

The convenience to a frequent traveler cannot be overstated, get off of the plane anywhere in the world and press a button and the time updates to reflect your current location and synchronizes with a correct time source for split-second accuracy. Given enough time, it’s not unrealistic to think that satellite calibration will be the next Eco-drive, a practical and everyday feature found in $ 50 department store watches. Until that time comes, we can all drool over the very appealing Seiko Astron (video below) and wait for its release in autumn of this year.

Seiko SRP031k1 watch review

Amateur review of my absolute favorite watch in my collection. I originally bought this watch as an affordable alternative to a Sinn or Lum-Tec or Bell & Ross and similar “pilot watches” of that style, which i love. As i saved up a little more money, i often considered replacing my Seiko with a Sin 656 or Lum-Tec M series. However, i always end up thinking, “Why? Why pay hundreds of dollars more for basically the same watch?” The Lum-Tecs even use Japanese Miyota movements (at least, the ones that i can afford). And Sinn uses Swiss ETA movements. I would much rather have a high quality, affordable watch, with a similar, yet original design, from a reputable watchmaker, with an in-house movement. And that’s exactly what the Seiko SRP031k1 is. I plan on using this watch for as long as it keeps ticking. Sorry if the quality sucks. Video shot and uploaded from my Motorola Droid 2.

Seiko Go Red For Women Tressia

Seiko Go Red For Women Tressia

It’s Valentine’s Day again, gentlemen. That’s right.

You’ve probably already bought your wife/ girlfriend/ mother/ grandmother/ secretary/ secret crush the perfect gift and made reservations at the perfect restaurant where you’ll watch her eyes light up as she opens that beautifully wrapped symbol of your love and devotion. But, if that’s not the case and you find that you’re at a loss this year, fear not – Seiko has you covered. Yep, the Japanese watch guys. Really. Not only will this sweet gift impress the lady in your life with your sense of style, it will also show her how much you care about her heart. Literally.

Seiko Corporation of America, a subsidiary of one of the world’s best-known manufacturers of timepieces has launched a ‘Giving Hearts’ campaign this year in support of the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women® crusade.

Concerned that heart disease claims the lives of one in three women who suffer from it, The American Heart Association has committed to educate and raise awareness of a disease that many tend to associate primarily with older men. The website at GoRedForWomen.org provides a valuable resource for women seeking information, needing to connect or looking for solutions. “We are committed to fighting this #1 killer that is preventable,” says the site. “We encourage women and the men who love them to embrace the cause.”

To support and help publicize this noble endeavor, Seiko USA has designed a special watch this year and is contributing $ 15 of every one sold through March 1, 2012 (with a minimum $ 100,000 contribution.). The company has also launched a ‘Giving Hearts’ web page on their site where consumers are invited to design their own virtual hearts and dedicate them to loved ones via email or for display in the public forum. (You can pick from a variety of patterns, borders, decorations and dedications.) Visitors may vote on their favorite designs and enter to win a free watch.

Called the Go Red For Women Seiko Tressia, it’s a slender women’s dress watch with a black ion bangle-style bracelet with a jeweler’s clasp, Swarovski crystal accents and an AHA heart logo on the face. It’s selling for $ 177 online and is even water resistant up to 30 meters. “Tressia’s heart is in the right place,” says Seiko. Now you can be sure your special valentine knows that yours is too.

Supporter owned and operated, Barcelona’s motto “Més que un club” (“More than a club”) exemplifies their commitment to excellence and community, making them an ideal partner for Seiko Watches. FC Barcelona began its relationship with Japanese fine watch designer Seiko in March 2011. President and CEO of Seiko Watch Corporation Shinji Hattori commented on the partnership, “The history, culture and ambition of the Club are a perfect match with Seiko, and we look forward to a successful cooperation in the coming years.”

FC Barcelona President Sandro Rosell presented Hattori with a Barcelona jersey with his name on it as a symbol of the strength of the two companies’ partnership. In the creative spirit of Seiko Watches, 11 FC Barcelona players helped design a unique wall clock.
