i understand that a chronometer watch is more accurate than a simple automatic watch (example Rolex Air King is automatic but Rolex Explorer is chronometer rated). I want to save up for a "Master Reveil" but see that it is automatique and wonder if this is inferior to a chronometer rating.

Answer

Hi. I have been selling Jeager le Coultre watches for the last 12 years.

In response to your question, no, the Jaeger leCoultre Master Reveil is not Chronometer rated, but is no way inferior. It actually far exceeds the accuracy of a Chronometer.

The chronometer certificate is given to mechanical watches sent to COSC (an independant testing lab in Switzerland) to verify their accuracy being between -4 to +6 seconds per day. Each movement is individually tested for several consecutive days, in 5 positions and at 3 temperatures. This certificate is an assurance that the watch company have regulated their watches to within this tolerance. Even watches without this certificate can fall within the scope required to obtain this status. (eg. Up until recently Zenith watches only had Chronometer Certificates with the Chronomaster models even though ALL their movements acheived the required tolerances).

Now with JLC watches, all Master Control models are given 1000 hours (that's over 40 days and 40 nights) of testing insitu ie: fitted in the case (Chronometer tests are carried out on the movement alone and then fitted, which can possibly alter the accuracy). The testing performed by Jaeger Le-Coultre is so rigorous that it far exceeds the testing that would have occurred had the movement been sent to the independent facility.

It is also important to note that a "COSC certified chronometer" is not the Holy Grail of watchmaking. With the high quality of modern manufacturing, this test is nowhere near as important as it was several decades ago. Most decent modern watches, when adequately adjusted, should be able to match the performance specified by COSC.

Hold it up to your ear. The good fakes have a swiss eta movement, but they still tick when you listen. The real deal makes a "singing" sound and there is nothing else like it. Also another way is to turn off the lights, real rollies have awesome lumination, the fakes have an ugly colored lume that isn't as bright.
