Question about giving your dog fish oil
Posted in Uncategorized on Feb 25th, 2011 No Comments »
I went to the drug store today to pick up some fish oil for my puppies because I was told it was good for them. I had to ask the pharmacist where it was because there were so many isles of vitamins and she asked me what kind I wanted and listed off 4 different kinds and what they were. I didn't end up buying any because I didn't want to get the wrong kind. What kind are you suppose to give them? Is it the wild salmon that has high Omega-3?
Thanks!
Answer
There are only two kinds of fish oil, as far as I am aware.
One is fish body oil – ANY kind of fish. Fish body oil is rich in Omega 3s, and is very good for the dogs skin. Fish oil is not medication, and you do not need to consult your vet – its no different than feeding your dog fish.
The other is Cod Liver Oil. Cod liver oil is also rich in vitamin A.
You probably just need the fish body oil. You can get it in capules (kind of messy) or in a pump.
I find the pump easier to use.
I give each of my small dogs either one capsule or one pump of fish oil every day.
Answer
Find a nice, uncomplicated fish BODY oil (not fish LIVER oil, contains too much vitamin A) or salmon oil, one with no soy and minimal Omega 6 and no Omega 9; one that delivers 300mg EPA+DHA total (minimum) per serving. A serving typically is 1 capsule. For a maintenance dose, you can feed each dog a capsule every other day; for a therapeutic dose, feed 100 mg's per 10 pounds of the dogs body weight daily.
You cannot overdose Omega 3, although if you feed more oil than your dogs are
accustomed to, they might have loose stools until they adjust.
Use capsules and feed as treats. Or poke a hole in the capsule and drizzle the
oil on their meat.
Answer
You can give any of them. Omega-3 and salmon oil are both good and I have given both to my dogs.
BTW you don't need to ask the vet, its a coat supplement. Just like you don't need to ask your doctor if you can take a daily vitamin. Same thing. They are great for dogs and help reduce shedding. My vet recommended them to me.
Answer
Fish oil is fine, capsule or liquid.
BEWARE of how the fish is kept before its' used for health needs though. MOST fish ingredients are kept preserved with ethoxyquin.
Ethoxyquin is a cancer-causing chemical preservative banned in human foods.
If your pharmacist cannot tell you if ethoxyquin is present, find another source more reliable.
Answer
I use the brand "Finest Natural" 1000mg Fish Oil pills…"Natures Bounty" as well as WalMarts brand have a 1000mg pill as well. There is nothing added, it just says "Fish Oil"….
Also…Im not sure what your puppies weigh but the dosage is 1 (one) pill per 10lbs of body weight.
Answer
before giving any kind of over the counter medication to your pet you should check with your vet and get his opinion on this. not everything that is good for humans is good for dogs. he can also tell you the dosage to give for the size of your dog.
Answer
Yes.
There are pet stores and other distributors that sell salmon oil in liquid form as well that you can pump over the food if the pups don't like the capsule form.
Answer
doesnt matter dogs can take anything
