i have a old rolex watch that my grand father has bought before 40 years (not sure may be much older). It is a old model watch that has given date option first.

The general rule is that a used watch is worth about half the price of a new one like it, but some brands sell at higher prices. Rolex and Patek Philippe are two such brands. You could probably get about 75% or so of the price of a new one if your watch is in excellent condition. By "panel", do you mean the dial that has the markers for hours, minutes, seconds and date window? You should consider repairing it. You have a valuable watch, as you can see from these figures I gave, so it's worth a little investment.
there are a number of places to buy or sell a used rolex watches. but there is only one that publishes or lists both its buy and its sell prices — visit the Rolex Exchange at Bob's Watches where you can buy pre owned rolex watches http://www.bobswatches.com/rolex-watches/used-rolex-watches.html

Venus and Kobayashi-san give good answers, I add serial numbers of 34-44 year old Rolexes, "Date-Just" model debut 1945, "Turn-O-Graph" version debut 1950, precede "Submariner" diving model, some Rolexes have 2 numbers inside case, e.g. have I-53 mean made first quarter of 1953, IV-56 mean made 4th quarter of 1956, now I give dates and serial numbers:
1965-1,792,000
1966-1,870,000
1967-2,164,000
1968-2,246,000
1969-2,689,000
1970-2,952,000
1971-3,215,000
1972-3,478,000
1973-3,741,000
1974-4,002,000
1975-4,266,000
If have lower serial number made before 1965, if have higher one made after 1975, tell me serial number, I tell you when watch made, my lover have many books, almanacs, catalogs and magazines of watches, Veuus and Kobayashi-san give some idea of price, I need more details tell you more, serial number, condition, case and bracelet material(s).
Be careful. Some old Rolex are far more valuable than an other. Get at least three dealers to quote you.
Why do you need to sell it do you actually have a more prestigious watch on your wrist? Consider keeping it . It will still be a Rolex in twenty years and you might then like the class of having something with a history on your wrist.

Check used watch books at library and bookstores, some have serial numbers tell when watch made, "Oyster Perpetual Datejust" still made, are two main variations, one is more common model, have stationary bezel, usually scallops or smooth now, another is "Turn-O-Graph" have revolving skin diver bezel, it cost more of common model, what mean "panel"? You can have repairs at authorized Rolex dealer, is costly, Rolex hold value well, price depend upon materials of case and bracelet, this watch available all stainless steel, steel & gold or all 18 kt. gold, obviously gold version is much costlier of steel or steel & gold, I can look at books and group, I belong Yahoo Group "watches2", I ask owner of group of this, I suppose used steel version sell at $2500-3500, used steel & gold version $3500-$5000, used gold version $9500-$11,000.
