what does a real Rolex have that a replica doesn't (besides
a certificate of authenticity)?
Some Rolex replicas are more accurate than ever and very difficult to tell from the real thing, replicas now a days have a smooth sweeping hand just like a real one thanks to a self winding automatic movement, replicas now have all the appropriate serial numbers and markings on the case and band,
the font on the dial (face of the watch) is computer printed and just as sharp as the real thing, replica Rolex watches even have the micro etched crown on the glass above the six o'clock marker and is barely visible to the naked eye just like the real thing, even the hologram sticker on the back is now very accurate
How do I know all this stuff?
I'm a member of a forum that discusses replica watches.

And just so you know, we are not watch dealers and are not trying to sell you anything, we just enjoy talking about replica watches of all kinds, how to tell what a good one looks like and most importantly how to avoid overpaying and getting an inferior watch.
The truth is, genuine Rolex watches do, in fact, "tick". However, they tick at around 5 to 6 times per second, so it gives the illusion of "sweeping" or "floating" around the dial. If you watch the second hand with a loupe you can see it.

Most fake Rolex have the name just painted on. Real rolex have the "ROLEX" name embedded. Rolex watches have a screw release back that can only be removed with a special tool. If the back just pops of with a butter knife it's fake. A rolex watch will have serial numbers either embed in the rear on the back or inside the watch back.
But the best way to find out is to take it to an independent jeweler for verification.
This is a follow-up to what the girl above me said. Heres the big key. Regular watched or fakes tick. Real Rolex watches roll. The time hands in a rolex are always moving (hints the name Rolex) If the watch ticks every second and the hand moves, Its not a true Rolex
Previous answers were about the mechanical movement.
> Check the crown as well, it needs to feel solid when unscrewing from the case. Adjusting the hands must feel good too, floppy twisting hands is no good.
> The bracelet must feel good, not too light and not too heavy. The metal finish must be smooth, no edges which cut your arm.
There are very good fakes but the total impression of the finish especially details (print, line out etc.) must be perfect! This is too expensive to get it right for most fakes.
