Last year, Jaeger-LeCoultre celebrated the roots of the Reverso with a limited edition model of the Tribute To 1931 called the “US Limited Edition”.  This watch closely resembled the standard production TT 1931 Reverso but took on a slightly more historic tone, with a warmer shade to the hands and hour markers, and slightly different script on the dial.  But, what made the limited edition of 100 US Edition Reverso stand out (see our detailed ruminations on it here here) and made it one of the hottest selling watches of 2011 for JLC was the strap on which it came.

You see, the strap that came on the US Edition of the TT 1931 Reverso was hand-made by Casa Fagliano – and Casa Fagliano is the leading producer of championship grade polo boots in the world.  But when we say “leading” we certainly don’t mean they make the most – in fact, they make but 90 pairs of boots per year – by “leading” we mean that they are regarded the world over as the finest riding boots money can buy.  They are made by hand in the suburbs of Buenos Aires just as they were four generations ago, and with the US Edition Reverso, the 100 lucky owners would be granted access to the exclusive club of Casa Fagliano.

With the 2011 edition, all 100 watches came with a black, hand-stitched shell cordovan Fagliano strap.  And this year, Jaeger-LeCoultre invited us down to Buenos Aires to get an early look at the second iteration of the Fagliano strap for the Reverso.

Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso GMT 18 Jaeger LeCoultre Grande Reverso Duoface Watch Review

As I write this review I am actually freshly back from a visit of the Jaeger-LeCoultre manufacture in Le Sentier, Switzerland. In the watch industry the Jaeger-LeCoultre manufacture is considered a special place because it is a serious factory where both cases and movements are made – which is a rare combo. I got to see a lot of Reverso cases being produced and realized just how complex they are to manufacture. A simple case requires dozens of steps that involve both hand and machine work. The efforts are necessary to achieve the right shape, polish, and of course unique case flipping mechanism.

The original Reverso was produced in 1931 for British polo players stationed in India. The elite group wanted a watch they could wear while playing the game without too much risk of damage. At the time watch crystals were mostly glass and were relatively fragile. The Reverso case was designed to flip over and reveal a polished piece of solid metal to protect the crystal on the other side. The flipping case mechanism has of course been modernized a bit, but retains the same basic system as developed about 80 years ago. Last year Jaeger-LeCoultre fervently celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Reverso which involved the release of many new models, limited editions, and a closer look at the heritage of the watch. For review I had the pleasure of checking out one of the newer pieces – the Grande Reverso Duoface (also sometimes just called “Duo”) timepiece (ref. Q374.24.21).

The Reverso comes in a range of sizes and style. The largest of modern watches are the super-sized Reverso cases in Jaeger-LeCoultre’s highest end models such as the Gyrotourbillon II and the Triptyque. The Grande Reverso is a step down from that. The more square Squadra is a handsome sporty option as well. Then there are smaller men’s versions as well as a few sizes for the ladies. The Grande Reverso case is 32.15mm wide and about 52mm tall. That length of the case prevents it from looking small. I would not say that the piece wears large, but it certainly doesn’t feel petite. The Reverso is a super classic look. Those three horizontal lines in the case above and below the dial really make it look distinctive, and the overall look and feel of the piece is ultra-classy. No where will a Reverso look out of place.

The case flipping function is slick and well-engineered. Hell, the brand did have 80 years to work on it. There are spring-loaded ball bearings that help it move easily and snap securely into place. Originally the Reverso has a plain metal caseback. Jaeger-LeCoultre early-on realized that this space was useful for custom engravings, enamel paintings, etc… Today for example there is a special Reverso website where you can customize your own and Jaeger-LeCoultre will make it for you. The brand also realized that if they created complex movements, the watch could have two dials. This Duoface is a perfect example of one of those pieces.

In this case Jaeger-LeCoultre decided to use each side as a different time zone. So this is a nice two timezone watch with the date. The idea is that you just flip over the watch to see the time zone elsewhere. One side has the time with subsidiary seconds dial and an open-date indicator. The other side has another time zone with a day/night indicator. That latter side would be use for what is often referred to as “home time.” It makes for a useful travel watch, and as a benefit each side is aesthetically different giving you the option to “wear it light or dark.”

Each dial is very much reminiscent of the Reverso’s historical look. The brand is careful to ensure that detailing is impressive by giving the dials machine engraving and crisp printing. The black colored dial also has luminant for night viewing. The best part is that the overall Reverso look is not only highly art deco in style, but also very legible and useful. It is hard to not be a Reverso fan. The design is timeless, looks good on most people, and even after all this time the flipping case concept is still fun. Others have tried to replicate the idea of a double sided watch, but no one does it better than JLC.

This particular Grande Reverso Duoface watch has an 18k rose gold case. There are steel versions as well but I have to say that gold suits the Reverso very well. I know there are 18k white gold versions, but you might as well just get a steel one at that point. If you go gold, go rose or pink gold for a case like this. The color looks great with both the silvered and black colored dials. The blued steel hands on the silvered dial are classic – and Jaeger-LeCoultre even flame blues their hands in-house.

Pull the case to the side and you’ll see the perlage decorated back plate. It adds a nicely machined look and frames the rest of the case well. On the wrist the watch is extremely comfortable and feel slimmer than it is. It is very interesting to me how rectangular-shaped watches have a very distinct feel on the wrist compared to round watches.

If you are a guy who likes modern sized watches I don’t recommend going for a size any smaller than the Grande Reverso case. If it is still too small for you then check out a Squadra. Attached to the case is an alligator/crocodile strap. Of course it looks nice and I like how it is fitted directly to the case with very little gap. Funny how gaps between a strap and case keep some watches from looking their best. The deployant clasp on the strap is quite nice. It has a hidden fold-over deployant and what you see is just a very elegant rounded buckle piece. Very nice.

The majority of Reverso movements are manually wound. This has a lot to do with the space and style of the movement. Though there are a few automatic Reverso watches around. Jaeger-LeCoultre of course makes all of their own movements. The shame in a watch like this is that you can’t see the movement. Even opening up the case is something that only an expert should do. That makes sense as there are hands on both sides. For those wanting a more “pure” horological experience there are watches in the Grande Reverso range very similar to this piece that have an exhibition style caseback on the second dial side of the watch.

Inside this Grande Reverso Duoface is a Jaeger-LeCoultre caliber 986 manually wound movement. All features are controlled via the crown and it has a power reserve of about 48 hours. It is a slick movement and all I could have asked for in addition to the existing features would be a power reserve indicator. For me, I really like it when manually wound movements have those. Price for this excellent Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso Duoface watch is $ 19,300 in 18k rose gold and about $ 10,200 in steel. It is a classic, and an easy decision to own.

A classic feminine beauty that is unique in its conception but carries a subtle redesign of its famous predecessor. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Grand Reverso Lady Ultra Thin has been unveiled and marks the 80th anniversary of the 1931 Reverso, the brand’s iconic watch.

In began in Switzerland in 1833 with Antoine LeCoultre who was a self-taught watchmaker and invented a machine that would produce watchmaking pinions. From that point on, the company grew until 1937 when the grandson, Jacques-David LeCoultre collaborated with Parisian Edmond Jaeger, an expert in ultra-thin calibres. Their friendship led to exciting watchmaking concepts and the birth of the Jaeger-LeCoultre brand.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Grand Reverso Lady Ultra Thin was released in a two-tone version combining pink gold and steel. Jaeger-LeCoultre partnered with Valextra, an internationally known luxury Maison, to create the Reverso’s new look and a distinctive double tour strap which comes in three colors.

The Reverso timepiece is a unique concept that was created in 1931. Based on a request by a polo player to protect his watch face, LeCoultre and Jaeger designed a case that could be turned around to expose only the metal back. This was originally created so the watch face would not be exposed to “shocks” such as occurred in the polo matches. The Reverso watch case was built so that it could “pivot on itself while sliding in its carriage.” This was quite a marvel and soon began to attract interest. Not only was the watch face protected, but the back case became a blank page which served as an engraving piece on which the buyer could have decorated to their personal tastes.

Since then, the Reverso has undergone many mechanical changes. It has held over 50 different mechanical calibres, from the smallest complication and ultra-thin movements to continuous calendars.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre partnership with Valextra allowed a new feminine style to be expressed in a favorite iconic timepiece. The double tour strap expresses itself with gorgeous color, skin and stitching. It speaks of glamour and elegance. Valextra is known for their attention to detail and quality craftsmanship and the Reverso for ladies shines with it.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Grand Reverso Lady Ultra Thin is a timepiece that becomes part of a woman’s natural accessories. It is definitely noticeable but blends into the overall look signifying a style that is glamorous and refined. The ladies’ Reverso is a watch that not only tells time but speaks of fashion as well.

Jay-Z and his watches.  Historically, he’s been an AP man.  He even had a limited edition watch created in his honor, and donated his personal Audemars Piguet Las Vegas Tourbillon to charity, which ended up selling for $ 220,000 to this man.  Then, with the release of Watch The Throne, the world heard him say “New Watch Alert: HUBLOT” (he can be seen wearing a Hublot Classic Fusion in the video).

Then, over the summer we saw Jay wearing one of the coolest watches on this green earth, the incredible Richard Mille RM027 while sitting courtside at the US Open.  After that, we spotted a Rolex GMT gifted to an engineer on his Watch The Throne album with Kanye West.  And now, after Jay-Z’s historic two night gig at Carnegie Hall (all for charity, we might add), we have some new watch alerts, including one you may not expect…

Diane Kruger wearing Jaeger LeCoultre with black band

Kruger got her first Jaeger LeCoultre for her 18th birthday

Actress and model Diane Kruger received her first Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso for her 18th birthday. This gift from her mother sparked Kruger’s love for luxury watches, a passion that has not only lasted through her illustrious career but granted her the honor of being the ambassador of Jaeger LeCoultre for almost four years.

The Reverso design originated in 1931 with British colonial army officers in mind: The watch’s case rotated to protect the dial from impacts while displaying the personalized and engraved back. Soon after this design came to light, another model adopted the concept and recreated the swiveling watch case with a feminine touch. Many different versions of the Reverso have been created since, but this Art Deco inspired model will always stand out through its unique elegance and style.

For the Reverso’s 80th anniversary last year, Jaeger LeCoultre celebrated femininity and the model’s personality by revealing a new design, the Grande Reverso Lady Ultra Thin. Diane Kruger, regarded as a woman that perfectly embodied the values of the Reverso, was chosen to be the face of this new watch. The mechanical, manually-wound Grande Reverso Lady Ultra Thin has 93 parts, 18 jewels and a 40-hour power reserve.

Kruger values time as of the essence, whether in work or simply just in life. “I am a stickler for timekeeping, so a watch is essential to me,” she says. Her feminine values also represent a breakthrough in the male-dominated luxury watch collector’s world: “It is something you can keep in the family as an heirloom to pass on to your children, which is incredibly important to a woman.”

As Kruger’s modeling and acting careers developed, her watch collection followed in suit. In 2007, Kruger found the perfect accent to her Venice Film Festival dress in the Jaeger LeCoultre Diamond 101 Joaillerie watch. She attended the 2009 Cannes Film Festival in a Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso Squadra Lady in pink gold, and subsequently donned the Jaeger LeCoultre Joaillerie 101 Art Deco watch to Cannes 2011.

Kruger visited the Manufacture Jaeger LeCoultre in June 2010, an experience that she says altered her entire view of watchmaking and especially her perception of the brand. “I had no idea how much expertise goes into making just one watch-each complication requires hours of craftsmanship,” she says.

Although Kruger has accumulated quite a few Jaeger LeCoultre pieces by now, one may wonder if she has a special love for a specific watch. The answer is that Kruger’s favorite is still her very first- the Reverso she received for her 18th birthday.

Once in a very, very rare blue moon, a truly amazing piece crosses your way. This is one of them: The Mother Of All Reversos. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Gyrotourbillon 2. A double-axis tourbillon with cylindrical hairspring; reserve de march and date indicators. 373 parts and 58 jewels keep everything turning. Oh, and it runs for 50 hours off one massive single barrel. As you would expect, the case is truly enormous to accommodate most of all the spherically shaped tourbillon; the movement alone is 11.1mm thick, accommodate in a case around 16mm thick. The case is so massive there’s a secondary integrated lock slider near the crown to prevent accidental reversing.

A watch like this transcends practicality and sits very much in the rarefied field of art, so I won’t attempt to comment on pedestrian things like its water resistance; it just isn’t important. Besides, I would seriously question the sanity of a person who chooses to go swimming with a six figure complication on a leather strap. They should immediately have all their watches confiscated by some higher horological authority. Suffice to say the piece has enormous wrist presence; it’s our horological bling in the best possible way. I personally love how the movement itself forms the dial, allowing you to appreciate the variations in surface finishing (clous de Paris, anglage, perlage, matte, brushed, polished…it’s all there) and the tourbillon itself.

In fact, I believe one of the very reasons the watch does not have a dial is to keep the thickness down due to the tourbillon; it appears that the cage is the thickest part of the movement. And what a cage! Two axes of rotation, different periods. I would imagine the end point of the tourbillon would probably trace a path covering all points on a sphere, if one were inclined to wait long enough. It’s actually quite a challenge to photograph this movement (and hugely more so to regulate it) because the tourbillon doesn’t stop. Your final composition is a bit of a surprise, because the cage keeps moving. I guess the barrel has to be blocked or a tool used to stop rotation to adjust the rate of the watch.

Since its introduction in 1931, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso has acted as the blank slate on which so many great stories have been told and tributes have been paid.  Now, in 2012, one more tribute will be made using the Reverso, one that in our opinion, couldn’t make more sense.

In 2007, Matthew Weiner and the team from AMC introduced a television show about 1960s Ad Men that has since not only become the first television show in history to win the Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series four years in a row, but also had a profound impact on fashion, design, and watches.  Think about how many times you’ve flipped through the pages of a magazine and seen a “Mad Men” style shoot.  Or how many times you’ve heard the thin, formal style of wristwatch now being referred to as “very Mad Men.”  In tribute to the incredible story of Mad Men and the connection Jaeger-LeCoultre has had with its stars and creators, we bring you the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Ultra-Thin Tribute To “Mad Men”.

With the exception of the newly released Reverso Ultra Thin Tribute to 1931, the Classique is perhaps in many ways the quintessential Reverso: it’s been in JLC’s catalog for many, many years; it can be appreciated by both men and women (the size is a nice in-between that makes it a largish ladies watch but a slim mens’ dress watch) and is powered by a hand-wound caliber 846.

_7050394 copy

_7050372bw copy

It’s also perhaps the closest thing we have to the original size, too. The bracelet is very flexible and comfortable for all wrist sizes; highly recommended over the strap if you have small wrists. (Fratello Tip: If you have very small wrists like my wife, you can make the extra links into a ring, see below.)

_7050536 copy

_7050442 copy

Interestingly, despite the long production run and affordable entry price – it’s one of JLC’s cheapest models – it’s not a very common piece on the secondary market. This says two things: one, people buy them to wear and keep, and two, Reverso owners are probably pretty passionate about their watches. I wonder how many have chosen to engrave something on the blank case back?

If you’ve paid attention to the vintage Reverso market this year (why would you? that’s our job), you surely have noticed that the Reversos that consistently sell for the most money are those with bright enamel dials.  As we previously reported, a vintage Reverso with a bright red enamel dial sold at Antiquorum for 35,000 CHF.

Just announced today is a new version of the TT 1931 Reverso (a watch we adore) with a bright red lacquer dial.  Was JLC inspired by the strong results of vintage pieces with red dials? Probably, but the new Grande Reverso 1931 Rouge doesn’t use enamel, but instead a nice bright lacquer.  It just looks great.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso 1931 Rouge will be available at the JLC boutique in Milan, exclusively.

Related Content: This is the second Italy-exclusive Reverso of 2011.  The other can be seen here.  Also, JLC created a bright blue enamel Reverso this year, too.
