2 3 rado d star200 Rado D Star 200 Dive Watches

While I like this new watch range a lot I am torn because it is a Rado without being a modern Rado. What do I mean? Well for the last long while Rado watches have been mostly typified by having mostly ceramic cases. In fact Rado was pretty much the innovator behind ceramic watch. For 2012 a cool re-done diver collection comes out and it barely has any ceramic! Well, a bit more on the chrono model. If you can get over that then you’ll probably like these new D-Star 200 Dive watches a lot.

I am not sure of all the color styles that will be available but so far we have blue and black trim models. The D-Star 200 will also come in three-hand and chronograph variants. The three-hand model will be 42mm wide and the chronograph will be 44mm wide. The cases are in steel and sort of retro-barrel shaped. I actually like this case design a lot. Interestingly enough Rado claims that the deployment clasps on the bracelets will be in titanium.

The D-Star 200 names stems from the fact that the watches are water resistant to 200 meters. They have sapphire crystals and display casebacks. Since the Rado logo is actually an anchor they styled the rotor in the movement to look like anchors – I thought that was a nice touch. The only ceramic element on the watches is the insert in the rotating bezel. It is either blue or black depending on the model. At least they included some ceramic there – which will work to assist with scratch resistance in that area.

Dial design is good but nothing revolutionary. These are actually quite sober designs with origins from the 1960s. Smooth legibility with a hint of pizazz. The contrasting colors on the chronograph make it a winner and my favorite model. Rado opted for bi-compax chronograph layout which a centrally aligned date. The symmetrical look is a benefit to the design and I like that they used a reverse mounted magnifier to make reading the date more convenient.

Inside the three-hand model is a relatively simple Swiss ETA 2824-2 automatic movement. They decorated it to look quite snazzy. The chronograph has a newer ETA A05.H31 that has 54 hours of power reserve, and some other nice features. This would be the version I would opt for – especially since the case size is a bit larger.

The three-hand version has a simple steel bracelet, but it is nice and it tapers. Overall it should be comfortable. The chronograph on the other hand finally shows a bit more ceramic. The bracelet has a black ceramic inner link next to the steel links for more interesting two-tone look to match the dial. Overall these are rather impressive watches designed for the mainstream market and they should do when well released later in 2012.

While there is certainly no shortage of dive watches on the market today there has been a gradual trend towards larger, thicker, and heavier divers that boast completely unnecessary water resistance depths. Few owners, if any, will take their watch below 200m let alone the 3000m or more that many high end Swiss brands are designing their watches to withstand. The appeal of the depth race is one that completely evades me, possibly because of my pedestrian sized wrist.

Thankfully, not every new model to market follows this “bigger is better” trend and in late December Rado announced their new D-Star 200, a dive watch line that has both a three-hand and a chronograph model. As one might assume from the name, water resistance is a completely practical 200m. This restrained approach towards the D-Star 200′s depth rating has paid dividends in its case size. The three-hand D-Star 200 measures just 42 x 12.5 mm (46 mm lug to lug) making it large enough to have a good weight and wrist presence but thin enough to fit under a cuff.

The D-Star 200 combines a hidden lug design with styling cues from vintage dress watches and the complete effect, in either three-hand or chronograph, is beautiful. Rado is part of the Swatch group and has fitted this new range with sapphire crystals, automatic movements, and ceramic bezel inserts. The three-hander will come in five variations and will be powered by an ETA 2824-2 which has been decorated by Rado. The chronograph is powered by the ETA A05.H31 movement which incorporates small seconds and a maximum measure of 30 minutes supported by a respectable 54 hour power reserve. The chrono D-Star 200 has a larger case which measures 44 x 15.7 mm but only 48.2 mm lug to lug.

Rado has definitely assembled an excellent package which combines elegant styling with up to date materials and technology in a size factor that will suit almost any wrist and many styles. We love a good dress diver and Rado appears to have that formula on lock-down with the D-Star 200. Pricing has not yet been announced and it will be difficult to predict what it will be as Rado doesn’t have anything similar to the D-Star 200 in their current line up. It is likely that the D-Star will be priced well above the Certina DS Action diver which is another nicely designed Swatch Group diver announced in 2011.

Rado is a brand we haven’t paid attention to for… well, forever. They made their mark back in the 1960s with their DiaStar line of watches, which were distinguished by their virtually scratchproof cases, made from high-tech ceramics. Through the ‘60s and 1970s, Rado kept a distinctive look that gradually became dated – thin rectangular dress watches and bulbous helmet-shaped sports watches, many with pedestrian quartz movements. And while Rado has never really caught on in the USA, it was for a long time one of the bestselling watch brands in Europe. Now Rado has released a new line of dive watches that made us sit up and take notice: the D-Star 200.

Rado D star Basel watch Rado D Star Basel Special 2011 Watch

Things are getting a bit weird when brands start making limited edition timepieces for Baselworld. That would be like auto makers producing special cars to debut at auto shows, that are done in honor of those auto shows. It starts to turn into a cyclical argument. This piece is the new Rado D-Star. In addition to be being a “Basel Special” piece, it is also done in honor of the classic Rado Diastar.

“Diastar” has been hipped down to “D-Star,” which is supposed to make the collection sound more cool. The slightly oval, oblong case is much like the original, but the sporty dial and subtle nature of the watch are a modern treat. In fact, this is probably an easy watch to brush off at first glance as being nothing special. Wear it on the wrist for a while and a design like this will quickly grow on you. The case is in black ceramic… in pure Rado style. Here done in a matte finish. The case is 42mm wide and water resistant to 100 meters.

Rado D star Basel watch dial Rado D Star Basel Special 2011 Watch

On the dial you have a simple, elegant design with a minimalists chronograph layout and nice applied hour markers. The polish on the hour markers and hands helps contrast nicely with the more flat tones of the case. This is a watch that revels in the dial and has a case that is there for shape and comfort alone. Features like a tachymeter scale and red chronograph seconds hand are there to give the watch a sportier feel – and they more or less succeed in that.

The watch is attached to a rubber strap with fold-over deployment clasp done in titanium. Overall a rather nice piece if you let it grow on you. The Rado D-Star Base Special 2011 will be part of a limited edition, but I am not sure of how many pieces. Available in October 2011, price will be $ 3,495.

rolex watches Question&Answer:
Question by ani: 1920s-50s Rolex, Rado, Bulova & Caravelle Watches?
I have four old watches: a Rolex from the 20s, Rado from the 30s, Bulova from the 40′s or 50′s and Caravelle mens watch from the 50s. I would have sold them locally because the 2 jewelry store owners told me there that they are genuine BUT could not sell them here since it’s a small midwest town I live in. They both said they would take in a lot of money on the coasts since they are worn for social status. I wonder how much they are worth? How would I go about selling them? And where?

all of them should have serial numbers on them contact the manufacturers and find out what they might be worth from them also contact any antique dealer then put them up on ebay or acution house

Answer by Canis Lupis
Most Swiss watches are almost identical other than the name. The most expensive parts are the movement and the sapphire crystal. Most use the ETA 2892.A2 movement ($ 100) or the Valjoux 7750 ($ 200). Most have a Chinese made sapphire crystal ($ 150). The remaining $ 3000 is what you pay for the name.

Rolex and Tag use their own movements in most, but not all their watches, but the difference is negligible.

Pick the watch that has the look you want.
