A certain air of sophistication and luxury has become synonymous with Michael Kors‘ fashionable watches and they’re insanely popular after the designer was anointed as one of Oprah’s Favorite Things. Ranging in the $ 250 to $ 500 price bracket, Kors watches aren’t exactly the cheapest things on the market. Considering the longevity of the watch, it’s wearability, and the materials used to create the watch, you can get the same sophistication at more suitable prices.

4 mk styles

Michael Kors watches range from $ 300 to $ 500–and it's only stainless steel

When people purchase a gold Michael Kors watch for over $ 400, they expect to get some carat of gold in that watch. Not so with Kors’ gold-tone watches, which have no gold content at all. All metal Kors watches are ion-plated stainless steel. To get rich, varying colors, many watch manufacturers use an advanced surface finishing process called ion-plating, which combines certain chemical gases to produce a particular color and increased durability and wear resistance. When colors of watches used to fade after a month or two, ion-plating allows certain fashionable colors up to two years of wearability before the watch even starts to fade. Most watches are made this way and many are backed by at least a two-year limited warranty that cover internal movement components of the watch.

The outward components include the face of the watch, known as the crystal, the bezel–or the glitz around the face–and the part that attaches the face to the watch bracelet is called the case. The bezel can be made of rhinestones and often absorbs most of the shock if you wear your watch while using your hands. Because the bezel is so susceptible to damage there is a $ 32 fee to replace it as well as the other outward components of the watch. The watch will have to be sent in, but don’t send it to Michael Kors as he is the designer, not the manufacturer for his watches. Michael Kors, and many other fashion and luxury watches, are manufactured at Metro Service Center in Dallas, Texas. Even if you are local to Dallas, you still must send your watch into Metro through the mail.

This warranty is the same for many watches, including Kors, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and DKNY. Those brands are made in the exact same way, in similar style to Kors–but just for a lot less. DKNY styles top off at around $ 300 and Marc by Marc Jacobs has many styles around $ 250, although there definitely are more expensive styles to choose from. You can find even more brands and models that are less expensive although they’re made with the same materials and processes. Furthermore, your watch would be different from everyone else who is throwing their money to Michael Kors for the same look time and time again.

Question by arlequino

Hi,

I have several questions:

1) For the question: “What are the RANGES / SEGMENTS of luxury watches available?”

http://www.chronocentric.com/watches/brands.shtml#breakdown

I would like to know how the watches were classified in segments, what parameters were taken into account.

2) Do you agree or disagree with the following market segmentations.
Would you consider the following segmentation the “standard” one for watch companies.

2.1 MARKET SEGMENTATION by Chronocentric.com

Four Major Market Segments:
-Mass Market Watches (Less than $ 50)
Sub-segments
* Fun Fashion Watches
* Sports Watches
* Character and Sports Logo Watches
-Middle Market Watches ($ 50-$ 299)
-Upper Middle Market Watches ($ 300-$ 999)
-Luxury and High Luxury Market ($ 1,000-$ 5,000 or More)

source: http://fon.gs/watches/

2.2 MARKET SEGMENTATION by “Market For Watches” Report.

-Mass
-Middle
-Upper Middle
-Luxury Market and High Luxury

2.3 MARKET SEGMENTATION by “New Criteria for Market Segmentation by Daniel Yankelovich”.
www.danyankelovich.com/newcriteria.pdf

In this first case we deal with a relatively simple mode of segmentation analysis. The most
productive way of analyzing the market for watches turns out to be segmentation by value. This
approach discloses three distinct segments, each representing a different value attributed to watches
by each of three different groups of consumers:

-People who want to pay the lowest possible price for any watch that works reasonably
well. If the watch fails after six months or a year, they will throw it out and replace it.
-People who value watches for their long life, good workmanship, good material, and good
styling. They are willing to pay for these product qualities.
-People who look not only for useful product features but also for meaningful emotional
qualities. The most important consideration in this segment is that the watch should suitably
symbolize an important occasion. Consequently, fine styling, a well-known brand name, the
recommendation of the jeweler, and a gold or diamond case are highly valued.

2.4 MARKET SEGMENTATION by “andhranews”

…in terms of range of luxury

- the basic range starts with 200 to 2000 dollars.
-The super-luxury watches cost 2,000 to 20,000 dollars.
-the prestige section may set you back by over 200,000 dollars.

http://www.andhranews.net/India/2009/January/14-Luxury-watch-industry-

Which one is the STANDARD / WATCH INDUSTRY SEGMENTATION?

3) In which segment would you place the following brands:

-RADO: ex. http://fon.gs/rado/ for 2,600 $ .
-CITIZEN: ex. http://fon.gs/citizen/ for 676.60 $ .
-EBOHR: http://fon.gs/ebohr for 480 $
-Seiko (in general)

It would be a lot to ask to actually put all the well known brands in their category?

Do you think RADO watches are overpriced?
What brand offers the best value/quality? Citizen?

Thanks for reading, hopefully you will find my questions interesting -and I will receive a response :-)

Ever heard of the Patek 5020? Probably not, unless you read Eric’s introduction to the rare perpetual calendar chronograph a few months back. The Reference 5020, sometimes called the “TV watch,” was introduced in 1994 as an alternative to the traditional 3970.  The 3970, of course, is the natural successor to the great line of Patek perpetual chronos which launched decades before with the 1518.  The 5020, however, was something entirely different because it used such a funky, tonneau style case.

The movement inside the 5020 was exactly the same as was used in the 3970, the Lemania based Cal. 27-70 Q, but the tonneau case did not sit well with the mega-Patek buyers of the mid-1990s and after only about 220 examples and two years of production, the 5020 was shelved.

But, like with so many other great watches of years past, the same collecting community that once shunned the 5020 in the 90s is now all a flutter with this rare bird.  Only 200 5020′s were made in gold (yellow, white, and rose), and about 20 were made in platinum.  Only five have ever shown up at auction.

The watch we have here, as sold by Bonhams New York last week, is indeed a platinum 5020 perpetual calendar chronograph, and the amount paid for it set a world record – US$ 338,500.  This amount is significantly higher than your average Patek 5970 and certainly 3970, and represents a real coup both for this once overlooked Patek and Bonhams New York.

You can see details of this amazing Patek Philippe 5020P perpetual calendar chronograph that sold for $ 338,500 at Bonhams NY by clicking here.
