Joseph Bulova founded Bulova Watch Company in 1875 in New York, New York. He opened his own jewelry store on Maiden Lane in Lower Manhattan, the center of New York City’s jewelry industry. He called it “J. Bulova” and with no trouble distinguished himself from the thousands of jewelers in the district with its excellence and innovation in method and artistry. One of Bulova’s most popular watches to date is the Precisionist for various reasons.

Bulovaprecisionist.com claims the Precisionist to be the most precise watch with a constantly sweeping second hand. Two factors affecting accuracy are temperature changes and vibration frequency. Bulova technology addresses both by adding a third prong. Bulova calls this watch “A new era in timekeeping” and says “[the] Precisionist brings the watch industry a new sense of dynamism, an excitement that redefines the expected.”

One of Bulova's Military watches.

One of the key qualities that makes Bulova watches so different from its competitors is the fact that they make watches for those in the military. These military watches are sleek in style with oversized heads and thick arms for telling time. Not only are they seen on many military men and women, the Bulova military watch is sold to the general public as well and has proven to be widely popular. Their bands range in colors from what you would expect in army green to brown and black. These watches range anywhere in price from 80 to 200 dollars, and can be purchased in stories like Macy’s, overstock.com, and of course, Bulova’s website.

Another one of Bulova’s collections is called Caravelle by Bulova. The subtypes of this collection are the basic watch, the diamond watch, the sport watch, and the crystal watch.

The basic watch doesn’t fall far from its name. It has a silver band and a black face with cursive numerals on the face. The diamond watch is a bit more intricate, still silver on the band and black on the fact, but with diamonds where the numbers should be. The sport watch has a silver band with a white face, and blue circles on the inside. The crystal watch is the most unique, it being rectangular in shape and gold on the face and the band. It is also lined with crystals on the outermost edges.

Innovation is one of the key ingredients in the success of Bulova watches. The company even has a “Bulova Time iPhone Application” called “Bulova Time” which serves as an alarm clock and shows the world time. It has the accuracy of the atomic clock and the ease of Bulova’s first alarm clocks. Bulova proudly unveils “Bulova Time” as a force, fusing fashion and purpose in an easy-to-use app for the iPhone and iPod touch.

The name Chanel is synonymous with haute couture, classic handbags, elegant fragrances and a glamorous collection of cosmetics and accessories. The brand’s founder Coco Chanel who long lives in the hearts and closets of fashionistas worldwide, was once a revolutionary in the fashion industry. Chanel came from humble beginnings in an orphanage, became a seamstress, and slowly worked her way to the top of her fashion empire.

"In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different." Coco Chanel

Chanel was a pioneer in many ways; she was the first to name a fragrance after herself a designer, and the first to incorporate the details of menswear into a collection of women’s wear. Many years later in the year 2000, Chanel would be the first to create a ceramic watch which would later create a fashion craze among celebrities and consumers alike. It would be quite fair to say that Chanel has designed many successful watches before their ceramic J12 timepiece however, eleven years later; it still remains as their most popular watch.

Ceramic watches in general became popular for a number of reasons. First, even if the timepieces are created by a high-end designer, the prices are still affordable despite the quality craftsmanship. Second, the ceramic watches offer much more bang for the buck with its scratch and fade resistant ceramic properties. It is also available in a variety of colors that are unique to only ceramic timepieces. Chanel’s J12 model was their first unisex timepiece which was wildly popular with both sexes. Lastly, the quality of ceramic watches is known to be more consistent throughout due to the design process involved with ceramics.

The Chanel J12 series has six styles within its collection; Chromatic, Jewelry, Classic, Chronograph, GMT, and Marine which are all sporty and distinct with a luxe feel. With such variety from style to style in the J12 collection, there is sure to be a watch to match the style of any stylish man or woman. Each timepiece is a reminder of what Coco Chanel first sought out to convey with her collection of hats and women’s wear-casual elegance. That is probably one of the main reasons why the Chanel J12 watch continues to be their most popular watches despite its release over 10 years ago.

Chanel set such a trend with their J12 ceramic watches and ceramic watches overall have become so popular that just about every watchmaker features a ceramic watch in their line of timepieces.

2011 was a good year for us at HODINKEE.  We made a lot of new friends this year, and wrote about a lot of new (and old) watches.  In fact, we wrote 614 posts in 2011 (not including the one you’re currently reading), and we think the hard work has paid off.  Actually, we know it has because our community of readers and supporters is only growing stronger by the day.  We couldn’t be more encouraged by the amazing level of interest we’ve seen in what we’re doing, and in mechanical watches in general.  Small things like a mention in the NY Times, or an article about independent watchmakers in Forbes, or an enthusiastic response to our first ever Pop-Up shop bring us back to keep working hard to find the stories in watches you won’t find anywhere else, the stories that made HODINKEE the site that it is today.

In 2012, you can expect to see more original content, including the launch of our Features section, exclusive interviews with the most powerful men in the industry, and more attention paid to the human side of watches.  But, enough about what to expect in 2012, you’ll see all that soon enough.

In what is becoming a yearly tradition (well, we did it last year), we’ve tallied all the page views from the entire year to bring you the list below of the top fifteen sixteen most popular posts.  Some of these may come as a surprise, some of them may not.  All of them are great in their own way.  So, without further ado, we present you the top sixteen HODINKEE posts of 2011.

Question by Braniac

I’m doing a bit of ad-hoc research, and was wondering what the most popular luxury watch brands in different countries were.

I read a report that said Rolex and Tag Heuer were at the top for the USA.

Does anyone know what the top 5 are in places like Britain, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia etc?

Thanks

I’ve had friends that say they hate the series, but they love Jacob Black. Personally, I don’t like any of the characters….except Alice. She rocks.

Best answer:

Answer by Becca
Jacob is the good guy that always finishes last. Totally sucks. You hear that line all the time. The good guys never get the girl because they always want the bad guy.

By the way, yes Alice rocks!
