CVSTOS has designed the Challenge Pilot RC Limited Edition watch inspired by the Formula 1 champion, Ringo Chong. The inspirational watch has been imbued with traits of the young victor – originality, love of speed and the spirit of sportsmanship.

CVSTOS, Latin for “guardian,” is a Swiss company launched in 2005. The brand quickly became known for their innovative and high-tech approach to their one-of-a-kind timepieces. The two partners, Antonio Terranova and Sassoun Sirmakes have combined their designer skills, technical knowledge and flair for marketing into a successful Swiss company. CVSTOS strives to find the perfect balance between traditional watchmaking and state-of-the-art innovation.

The Singapore racing champion, Ringo Chong, is a “seasoned pro” and one of the youngest drivers in the regional racing circuit. His wins include both the Rally of Singapore and the Tour de Singapore. He has also won the Marina Bay F1 circuit in the Aston Martin Asia Cup F1 and was crowned Overall Champion in the Ferrari Asia Pacific 458 Challenge. It seems CVSTOS has good cause to join forces with Ringo Chong.

The CVSTOS Challenge Pilot RC Limited Edition watch certainly gives the appearance of being unique. Its black case is barrel-shaped and made of steel and aluminum alloy. Sharp yellow, a take from Ringo’s Ferrari, stripes and inserts provide a nice contrast against the black and charcoal background. Sub dials sit at the three, six and nine o’clock positions for the chronograph counters and the automatic movement comes with 48 hours of power reserve.

The bright yellow coloring is also seen in the stitching along the Alcantara wrist strap, which is a suede leather that was developed for the F1 race cars as the seat or steering wheel covering. The color pattern continues with “Start/Stop” and “Reset” buttons placed on the right side of the watch. Their design is made to resemble the pedals in a race car. The “Date” button rests on the left side of the watch. To complete the package honoring Ringo, his name has been placed inside a small rectangular red box on the dial to the left of the 12 o’clock position.

CVSTOS has boldly stepped into the future with the design of the Challenge Pilot RC Limited Edition watch. The innovation and technical knowledge that has been displayed is a tribute to, not only Ringo Chong, but the brand. CVSTOS has shown that they are a powerful watchmaking brand that can create a new concept and fulfill it with their inherent skills and mechanical timepiece expertise.

IWC auctioned the ‘One out of One’ Big Pilot Muhammad Ali edition watch during the Celebrity Fight Event last Saturday in Phoenix, Arizona. This white gold Big Pilot, manufactured to mark the legend’s 70th birthday last January, fetched $ 60,000 USD during the auction. Besides the watch, IWC also chipped in this ‘Greatest of all Time’-tome, with over 3,000 illustrations by more than 150 photographers and artists, celebrating Muhuammad Ali’s life.

IWC Big Pilot Muhammad Ali Edition

The Celebrity Fight Event 2012 in Phoenix was packed with – of course – celebrities like Halle Barry, Tom Hanks, Andrea Bocelli and many more. Pictures of the event can be found at the official IWC Facebook website.

Besides being a One out of One limited edition IWC Big Pilot (ref. IW500435 ) for the great Muhammad Ali, this watch has been tailored for the occasion with a special engraving on its case back (Muhammad Ali signature) and features a matte black dial with signal-red hour markers and hands (Super Luminova). The alligator strap has matching red lining as well. Inside, there is IWC’s caliber 51111 with its 7-days power reserve indicator on the dial.

A new Chronograph from Ocean7, Mitch Feig’s Dive Watch company – is in fact a Pilot Watch! I remember the first Ocean7 Chronograph I bought, Swiss Made using the Valjoux 7750 movement costed $ 1800. This new Pilot uses the same basic parts and even comes DLC coated and only runs $ 799! This certainly is a very attractive price point for buyers as it puts an automatic Swiss Made chronograph well below $ 1000. From what I’ve seen from Ocean7 in the past as far as quality is concerned, this should be a very solid buy.

From Ocean7: “The OCEAN7 Watch Company has released one of the most affordable handmade Swiss ever made available on the market: the Pilot Chronograph. The Pilot Chronograph features a Swiss ETA 7750 chronograph movement and many desirable features:

Sandblasted, DLC coated case
Swiss ETA 7750 Chronograph Movement
44 mm diameter
15 mm height
Swiss Orange Super Luminova
Domed Sapphire Crystal
PU Rubber Sport Strap with Black, PVD Coated Buckle
Water Resistance – 5atm
22mm Lug Spacing”

Awesome! Zenith hits another one out of the park with the new Zenith Pilot Montre d’Aeronef Type 20 – a limited edition production of 250 pieces. This bad ass watch has a case diameter of 57.5mm, and uses the in-house pocketwatch caliber 5011. The watch is part of their Military Legacy watches series and is a limited edition created for the Smiling Children Charity Event.

Since this is such a limited production, I don’t think it will be in my own budget – but I can always dream can’t I!

Here is a shot of the Zenith 5011 in a Pocket Watch from Zenith:

Classic What Watch If IWC Big Pilot Top Gun Miramar

“Watch What-If” is a special column on aBlogtoRead.com that asks the playful question “what if an iconic watch you know and love was offered in a different style?” The idea embraces a good timepiece’s core design and has fun by offering new colors and material concepts to stimulate your senses. These ideas may be provocative, artistic, or just plain silly. This is about fun, Photoshop, and the celebration of wrist watch design and experimentation. The original design we work off will always be at the bottom of the article. The designs are brought to life by Beau Hudspeth who does the artwork and concepting after he and I choose the models and styles to focus on. These special design experiments are extremely time consuming and labor intensive but we hope you enjoy the results. Ideas and comments are more than welcome. Enough response may even lead to a round two of design of the same watch – so please comment below. You are also encouraged to suggest watches that make it into the Watch What-If section here on aBlogtoRead.com.

As many of you know, SIHH 2012 official opened today and there’s always tons of beautiful new timepieces to drool over at this time of year. With Basel just around the corner as well, its probably the most exciting time to be a WIS!

This year IWC brings some new Pilot watches to the table. Its been a while since IWC has done something creative with their Pilot’s watches, with the last big introduction being the Big Pilot a couple years back. A few of this years offerings are the IWC Big Pilot Top Gun Miramar 7 Day and Chronograph, and the Pilot Worldtimer.

The Top Gun Miramar watches are very cool. Both measure an imposing 48mm in diameter!! In beautiful Ceramic cases with Titanium case backs. Both feature in-house movements, with the Chronograph model showcasing the new Calibre 89365 Flyback Chronograph, and the 7 Day movement using the 51111 movement with Pelaton winding system.

The Pilot Worldtimer features a large 45mm steel case, and a new 24 hour timing system that allows you to see the time in 24 different timezones at the same time! Reminds me of my Seiko World Time clock in my office, but in Watch form. Very cool, and very useful for those that travel everywhere.

Overall a nice few offerings that caught my eye from SIHH 2012.

The Pilot Chronograph Top Gun Miramar watch

IWC's new Pilot Chronograph Top Gun Miramar Watch

IWC Schaffhausen, luxury watchmaker and manufacturer of precise, sturdy aviator timepieces since the 1930s, has unveiled two new Pilot’s Watches scheduled for release at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), January 16th, 2012: The Big Pilot Watch Top Gun Miramar and the Pilot Chronograph Top Gun Miramar. These timepieces are just two of the Pilot’s line that are scheduled for exhibition at SIHH.

The Big Pilot Watch Top Gun Miramar has a 48mm metallic grey case, and is outfitted with the IWC’s largest automatic movement—caliber 51111—which has a power reserve of 168 hours. The face displays a separate inner hour circle in red and an outer chapter ring in beige, a nod to IWC’s military roots, since navigational efficiency dictates that the minutes and seconds take priority over the hours. The watch strap is green textile, and the watch hands are luminescent beige outlined in black. The case back and controls are titanium.

The Pilot Chronograph Top Gun Miramar has a 46mm case with a caliber 89365 chronograph movement. Like the Big Pilot Top Gun Miramar, the watch face has a separate hour circle and chapter ring display, and has similar design facets, such as the green watch strap and the dark grey case. IWC’s long tradition of manufacturing first-rate deck watches greatly inspired the new line. “The new Miramar line is such a perfect fit for IWC,” said Christian Knoop, the Creative Director for IWC. “Premium-class watches with outstanding mechanics and a rugged, almost hard-edged feel.”

The Top Gun Pilot Watch line was first made public in 2007, “Top Gun” also being the moniker for a special training program in the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School. The line was an addition to the Pilots line, which had a 70 year history of crafting aviator watches to suit the needs of a rapidly advancing aeronautics industry. The Pilots line was designed in the 1930s and 40s to meet military specifications for deck and navigation watches; the Mark 11—the best known of IWC’s Pilot’s watches—was manufactured for the Royal Air Force beginning in 1948, and was used for more than 30 years.

The name “Miramar” is a tribute to the California location of the storied United States Navy Fighter Weapons School pilot training program. “Flying enthusiasts all over the world think of Miramar in California as the birth place of the Top Gun legend,” said Karoline Huber, IWC’s Director of Marketing and Communications. “With our new TOP GUN Miramar design line, we are addressing watch lovers who consciously embrace IWC’s long-standing tradition of manufacturing Pilot’s Watches, but who also wish to benefit from the technological advances of the 21st century and the inimitable quality typical of IWC.”
