Last June there was a special Christie’s auction that featured a series of timepieces owned by James Ward Packard – namesake of Packard automobiles. The highlight of the auction was this specially commissioned Vacheron Constantin pocket watch made in 1918.

The pocket watch came in a hand-chiseled 20k gold case with J.W. Packard’s insignia on the caseback. The beautiful gold case was hand-engraved and the dial was simplistic given all the features the watch had. Inside of the grande complication was a beautiful movement that offered the time, 30 minute chronograph, minute repeater, and grande and petite sonnerie. You’d never know all that based on looking at the dial. Really a great timepiece – this guy has good taste.

This pocket watch was estimated to reach up to $ 500,000 at auction but ended up going for almost $ 1.8 million. The winner? Vacheron Constantin. Their museum won the bidding watch to add to their collection of historical pieces. Vacheron’s own forum TheHourLounge.com has more details and images here (images of the watch are from there as well).
Really a beautiful one of a kind creation. Packard was a serious collector and his legacy lives on in the watches he had built for himself.

Now THIS is a movement.Earlier this year we told you about some watches sold by Christie’s New York – in particular, one that belonged to James Ward Packard, the founder of Packard Motor Car Company and also a significant watch collector.
The unique Vacheron Constantin 20k grand complication dating to 1918 sold for a whopping $ 1.8 million. Happily for the ultra high end horology loving public the watch was purchased by the Vacheron Constantin museum, meaning that the chances are good that it won’t be locked away in a vault for the next century.
Alex Ghotbi, of VC’s discussion forum The Hour Lounge, has posted an amazing series of live pictures of this amazingly important and complicated piece of horological history. You can click through to see more here on HODINKEE, but to see all, it’s best to visit the Hour Lounge here.

Question by JDB
I want to restore my Packard Bell iStart 1359 to its original factory settings. I have tried all the F buttons at start up and none work. I have tried Packard Bell Support – Smart Restore didn’t work. I am going to ask Currys for a disk but I don’t know what to ask for. Any help? Thanks
Answer by Ol’grizzler
Curry’s will not stock a restore disc mate. Each computer model has it’s own disc and there are too many for curry’s to stock them all. Packard Bell should be able to send you the correct one if you explain what has happened.

Answer by Mike
I used to try and download all my drivers manually. But then I discovered there was software available which can scan your system and update all your drivers automatically. The whole process takes only a few minutes. If you are lazy like I am check out the following website for a free scan:

Bell & Ross Question&Answer:
Question by tonyandtan
My Packard Bell R1935 laptop has broken. I took it into repairers and they said it was the screen. I’ve tried plugging it into various different external monitors. Each one displays the initial Windows Logo then says that there is no input. Which external monitors will work? Do I need a 15.4″ monitor only and does it need a special resolution to work with this laptop? Thanks.
Answer by cr
You have the problem that the external monitor is not yet active (afetr booting into Windows it still tries to display on the broken internal TFT). All monitors are supported. Try to use the Function Key + F5,7 to switch to external monitor mode. I am not sure how it is done on HPs.

Question by S
I use to have a desktop computer that was XP but then I got a new computer that is now vista. I tried to install the scanner but it isn’t compatible to vista. I have been looking around on the Packard Bell website for the software thats compatible with vista but i am having no luck. I am just wondering can I install it to work on vista or do I need to buy a new scanner?
Answer by Tofus
Without the drivers, your scanner is no more than a large flat brick, its amazing how manufactures think by not making software for the older parts, customers will go out and buy their newer ones, I think most would get really pee’d off when they found out the truth and switch to a different make
