Yves “Jetman” Rossy once again pushed the boundaries of aviation by completing a fabulous flight above the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This airborne pioneer, who is the only man to fly with a rigid wing equipped with four jet engines, jumped out of a helicopter above the Rodrigo de Freitas Lake, before stabilizing the wing and heading full throttle north to fly around Corcovado Hill. He then tracked south of the city to fly alongside Ipanema Beach, Copacabana and the famous Sugar Loaf Mountain, before pulling his parachute and landing safely on the beach in front of the Copacabana Palace hotel.

The carbon-kevlar jetwing is equipped with four jet engines, each with a 22 kg thrust, thus propelling the Swiss aviator at a speed of 200-300 km/h which he controls via a simple hand-held throttle in his hand. To adjust his trajectory and his altitude, he relied exclusively on maneuvering his body, shoulders and legs.

The entire feat lasted 11 minutes 35 seconds in all, at an average altitude of 1200 meters, and no problems were reported before, during or after the flight. A former fighter pilot and current Swiss International Air Lines captain, Yves Rossy naturally ensured that all necessary safety measures were in place.

Yves Rossy aka “Jetman,” took to the skies recently to perform aerobatic figures with two L-39C Albatros planes over the Swiss Alps. Rossy, a Swiss pilot, became the first and only man in aviator history to fly with a jet-propelled wing in November 2006. After 10 years of development and more than 15 prototypes, Rossy used a wing he’d created with four model jet engines to fly for five minutes and 40 seconds. He carried only an altimeter and a tiny throttle control. In May 2008, the 52-year-old made his first official flight over the Swiss Alps in front of the media. Rossy crossed the English Channel in September 2008 by air and the event was broadcast live to 165 countries. It took him 13 minutes. Since then, Rossy has flown alongside two Boeing Stearman biplanes carrying the Breitling Wingwalkers, circled a hot-air balloon and hurtled over the Grand Canyon. Nov 26, 2011 Amazing pictures from Switzerland show where “jetman” Yves Rossy gave this incredible flying display, using a tailor-made jet pack. The aviation enthusiast leapt from a helicopter and performed a series of aerial acrobatics above the Alps. He then joined two jet planes in a synchronized flight. To synchronise their flight paths the jets reduced their speed to 220 kilometres per hour (137 miles per hour), which put their engines at a point close to stalling. Rossy’s previous aerial feats include flying the English Channel and looping the loop around a hot-air balloon.

COURTESY: BREITLING VNR Swiss adventurer Yves Rossy on Saturday completed a flight over the Grand Canyon, in the US state of Arizona, in his custom-built jet suit – his first such flight in the US Rossy performed the stunt on Saturday with little fanfare, before a small group of team members, and his sponsor, Swiss watchmaker Breitling, announced the successful flight on Tuesday and released footage. He was airborne for about eight minutes, soaring 60 metres above the canyon rim on the Hualapai Reservation. A planned Friday flight before reporters was cancelled after Rossy determined it would be too challenging without any practice runs. The US Federal Aviation Administration had given him the green light less than an hour before the scheduled stunt. Rossy’s sponsor. Rossy flew up to 305 kilometres p/h before deploying his parachute and landing on the canyon floor.
