This year at Basel World, Rolex updated the purest of their sport watches, the no-date Sub, with a new reference (114060).  This new no-date Sub very much the same as the earlier no-dates, but there are some difference, which we covered at length in  this detailed look at the new Sub here.

But, to really understand what the 114060 Sub is, we thought it would be best to compare it to a no-date Submariner from forty years earlier, a Reference 5512 from 1972 – and that is exacly what you see above.  These watches are exactly the same, except not at all, don’t you think?

Girard-Perregaux is, as we mentioned on Monday, making a major push into the 21st century.  They’ve got a new website, a new owner’s club launching very soon, and a new blog for gentlemen (other types of men, need not apply).  Today we caught word that GP will be launching yet another initiative, this time showing us the other side of several of the manufacture’s youngest and most talented watchmakers – including activities such as horseback riding, skiing, playing the guitar, and playing chess. The journal will follow eight tof these young men and women not only at work, but also when they are with friends and at home.  The journal will be available in print and online at www.TheNewFaceOfTradition.com.

This project will kick off with a special event at Cipriani Dolce in New York City, where guests will have the opportunity to participate in an in-depth one-on-one workshop with the watchmakers. The workshops will demonstrate the intricacies of the movements and include hands-on lessons on how they are built. In addition, Girard-Perregaux will feature the latest 2012 novelties and Museum pieces from its historical archives.  The tour will then go onto several other cities around the world.

For more details on this cool new intiative from Girard-Perregaux, visit The New Face of Tradition here.

Here is a behind the scene look at the creation of this campaign:

YOU’RE INVTED:

On April 30th, GP will host a cocktail with watchmakers at their boutique on Madison Ave from 6-8 pm showing museum and new pieces. If you would like to attend, please call the boutique at 646.495.9915 or Girard-Perreaguax PR at 212.217.9065 to RSVP. Just mention HODINKEE and you’ll be all set.

One of our favorite things to do with new watches that are, in theory, connected with the watches of previous generations is put the old and new side-by-side.  You saw it here with the Rolex Explorer II Orange-Hand and here with the Royal Oak Jumbo, and at Basel World, we decided to do it with the excellent new Jack Heuer 80th Birthday Carrera, a watch we showed you in detail here.

You see, Jack Heuer designed his 80th birthday watch himself, and he is also responsible for the conception of the classic Heuer chronos for 40+ years ago, so, we brought along an early 1960s Heuer Carrera (reference 2447N) to see how they look side by side.  Obviously, the biggest difference between the two Carreras is the diameter – roughly a 5mm variance.  But, you can see the hands, hour markers, and shield are very much the same, not to mention the case design.

What is also interesting is just how nice the 1/5 second scale is on both of these watches – placed expertly on the rehaut (the Carrera was the first watch with this trait – traditionally they were placed on the dial itself).  Withh the 60s 2447N you have a nice white contrast against a black dial, and with the 80th birthday watch, a clean grey again a bright silver.

So, comparing a Jack Heuer design of 2012 against a Jack Heuer design of the early 1960s, you see that the man still knows how to make a good chronograph, half a century later.

Question by Sq W

I’m thinking getting a citizen watch for my bf but I found the price I got on Ebay is more than $ 100 cheaper than amazon. I was wondering if they’re fake…Anyone could explain this for me? THX!
I’m seeing two watches. Both of them are unfortunately citizen…

If something seems too good to be true, it usually is.
The authentic watches on eBay are used.
The new ones are fake.
It’s as simple as that.

By the way, a $ 40 watch can be bought that is much more accurate than a Rolex, and no less accurate than the most expensive Citizen.

I recently bought a Girard-Perregaux Men’s Haute Horlogerie Vintage 1945 XXL Watch for my father. He loves it! It is certainly for the more traditional of men.

Question by moschino

Hi all

I was wondering if anyone else brings over watches or any other luxury items likes handbags to the UK from the US. The reason I ask is because there are silly Tax laws in the UK and you really do get stung when you bring stuff over. Is it easier to send it via the mail? Or do you just go through customs? let me know, especially if you have been stopped or you do it regularly or you regularly mail items of high value from the US to the UK.

Just quickly glancing at the customs and revenue website, you guys get screwed! I thought the allowances here in the US were low!
Anyway, if it’s an expensive watch you bought for yourself, why not just wear it and not declare it? Same thing with the bag. As far as shipping it back goes, you have to weigh the cost of the shipping and insurance versus going straight through customs. I know if we ship things back they have to go though customs anyway so you may or may not have to pay a duty depending on value, etc.

Somehow big brother usually gets more than his share.

good luck!!

There are two watches that most men of a certain mold would associate with Steve McQueen: the automatic Heuer Monaco with blue matte dial (reference 1133B) and the Submariner reference 5512. But McQueen wore many other watches throughout his life, including the Hanhart 417 (or 417ES) chronograph. Hanhart is a German manufacturer that specialized in producing chronographs for the German Air Force, including the Luftwaffe in World War II through the West German Air Force in the 1950s.

Jacob & Co Question&Answer:

Question by alacowgirl123

The big question: Edward or Jacob? And reasons why one is better than the other?
I’m personally in love with both Edward and Jacob, Edward’s perfection against Jacob’s beautiful character flaws. So which one’s better? Edward or Jacob? And why? Or will they always be equal?
Sorry if I’m offending anyone, but there was no hard feelings intended. And please, no Twilight haters.

Best answer:

Answer by Please, use the SEARCHBAR
The big question: WHY DOES NO ONE KNOW HOW TO USE THE SEARCHBAR?!

Sorry, but seriously. Besides the fact that this same question was already on the front page of B&A, this question has been asked on this forum over 4000 times. I kid you not. Please, there is no need to ask it again.
