We’ve been doing our best to keep you up to date on the very best of Basel World 2012 (see posts here).  There will be literally dozes of more posts to come on the topic, but for now, we thought we’d show you something old in the middle of all the releases.  You are looking at an original Jaeger-LeCoultre Geophysic, from 1958.  This is a true cult watch among vintage collectors, and here’s why:

“1957 – 1958 was designated International Geophysical Year. This was an international scientific effort in which 67 countries took part in making observations and carrying out experiments in various aspects of the earth sciences such as seismology, electromagnetism, glaciology, radioactivity and solar activity. The Jaeger LeCoultre “Geophysic” wristwatch was inspired by the Geophysical Year. To publicise the effort, watches were given to the crew of the the US Nautilus, the first nuclear powered submarine, after its trip under the North Pole in 1958. This watch was made to be anti-magnetic to 600 Gauss to combat the effect of magnetic fields that could disturb the timekeeping qualities of the watch. 1038 pieces were made in stainless steel and 30 in gold. After 1962, the Geophysic was fitted with an automatic movement and renamed the “Geomatic”.”

So what this what is is one of those 30 solid gold Geophysics.  And, the thing is entirely original and for sale tomorrow via Anquorum Geneva with an estimate of 8,000-12,000 CHF.  Perhaps the rarest trait of this original Geophysic is that it still retains its factory crystal.  A crystal isn’t a big deal in most cases, but on thish particular watch, the lume plots were actually applied to the crystal and not the dial – so in the vast majority of Geophysics you see for sale (which is rare in itself), you wont see any lume plots due to the replaced crystal.  Cool, no?

The IWC Ingenieur is something of a cult-classic.  It is one of the few really collectible vintage IWC wristwatches, along with the original Aquatimer and Mark XI.  The original Ingenieur launched in 1955 with an automatic caliber housed in a soft-iron cage to protect against magnetic fields (think competitor to Rolex’s Milgauss and Omega’s Railmaster).  The technical development of the Ingenieur movements would fall under Albert Pellaton, and the Pellaton IWC movements are regarded as some of the most robust of the 20th century.

In 1967, the second generation of the IWC Ingenieur was introduced, and that is exactly what we’ve found for you today.  But this vintage Ingenieur has some really attractive traits that you don’t often see with vintage Ingy’s.  First, it has a black dial, which is slightly less common than the silver dial version.  Second, it features the original IWC Gay Freres bracelet (GF made bracelets for everyone back then, including Rolex, Heuer, and the famous bracelet of the original AP Royal Oak 5402). 

On top of the black dial and original bracelet, this Ingenieur actually comes with the original caseback tool and original document of sales from 1970.  The price of this Ingenieur? 361 Swiss Francs, or approximately $ 84.  Not bad right?
