Raising a 1,800 square foot mainsail is an exhausting task, even if you have five other guys helping out. Doing so on a sultry Miami afternoon after a hearty breakfast didn’t help matters. This past weekend, a few journalists, retailers and one lucky contest winner got to see what it’s like to sail on an ocean racing yacht, including what it takes to hoist and trim sails and man the tiller, all the while avoiding losing a finger in a winch or tripping over a rope and falling overboard.

Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Cera Gold watch 3 Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ceragold Watches Hands On

For 2012 Omega released a new 18k red gold version of the Seamaster Planet Ocean three-hand and chronograph models with a new type of “Ceragold” bezel. Ceragold is more or less the gold version of Liquidmetal (that I discussed in more detail here). It is a special process that Omega uses to inset gold in the engraved ceramic bezel. In a sense, this is Omega’s answer to Rolex’s Cerachrom.

So why isn’t it just “gold Liquidmetal”? Because it isn’t. The Liquidmetal process is very similar to Ceragold, but uses a different type of metal. Ceragold actually uses gold. In a nutshell, the ceramic bezel is formed and then the numeral and index holes are engraved in the ceramic bezel disc. After a conductive layer is formed in the engraved area, layers of 18k red gold are applied using an “electroforming” process. Next, the excess gold is polished off and the Ceragold bezel is finished. Omega details the Ceragold process rather well here.

So as you can see, Ceragold is similar to Liquidmetal, but not quite the same. Plus, it is a cool term. Note that as of now it only applies to the forming of the bezel. Each of the watches I have photographed are 18k red gold on black, but there are also white with gold models available. The black and gold models are extremely sexy though.

These watches are the 45.5mm wide versions of the Seamaster PO. There is the chronograph and three-hand version available with the Ceragold bezel – both look pretty fantastic. Omega will also offer the smaller three-hand Seamaster PO in the 42mm wide case with the Ceragold bezel. The watches contain in-house made Omega automatic movements. For more information about the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean watches see my review here.

Being gold models these watches have the higher-end 8501 or 9301 calibre movements. These versions of the 8500 and 9300 movement range have 18k red gold bridges and rotors. At this time I don’t think there is a matching 18k red gold bracelet, but the watches do come on black alligator straps. Omega makes a damn solid diver and nothing is lost here with the 18k red gold versions of the Seamaster Planet Ocean Ceragold models. Prices are $ 22,500 for the 42mm PO, $ 25,000 for the 45.5mm PO, and $ 33,000 for the 45.5mm PO Chronograph Ceragold models.

Harry Winston has been making timepieces that are recognized for their design as well as their innovation for over 2 decades. Collections such as The Opius Series have left their unique mark on the horological heritage. The brand has now created a timepiece for sports watch lovers and it is the new Ocean Sport Chronograph. Stylish and functional, this watch is just the right accessory to complement any formal or casual look. The fine mechanics and functional precision seen in the other Harry Winston timepieces is also seen with this watch. Recently released to the market, there are only a limited 300 units of this watch available at the moment.

This timepiece comes in beautiful light grey and white hues with blue spots that give it a chic and stylish look. The watch has a case that is 44 millimeter in diameter and 14.8 millimeter thick and is made of Zalium, which is one of the signature features of Harry Winston watches. Zalium, a hypoallergenic alloy made of zirconium and aluminum, is a light but tough metal that keeps the watch resistant to corrosion and scratches. The bezel is also made of this alloy. The dial has a sophisticated, three-dimensional look with its graphic cut-outs that focus the eye on the display mechanism. It is rhodium plated and has a Clous de Paris engraving, which is a guilloche pattern on the hollowed lines that intersect to form tiny pyramidal shapes. The dial is protected by a sapphire crystal that is very resistant to scratches.

The watch is powered by a mechanical movement with automatic winding function. The Swiss movement has 42 hour power reserve and runs at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. This timepiece has several features that include hours, minutes, seconds, and chronograph functions, with hour and minute counters at the 6 and 9 o’clock positions respectively. Additionally, there is a shot-peened date display at the 12 o’clock position and the Harry Winston logo at the 3 o’clock position. The lugs and chronograph pushers are coated with diamond like carbon that makes them extremely durable. Furthermore, this model is also water resistant up to 200 meters.

This watch comes in black rubber strap and folding buckle that is made for comfort when worn and complements the sporty look of the timepiece. It combines the multifunction of sports watch with the sophisticated features of a luxury watch. This Harry Winston ocean sport chronograph is a quality watch that is currently listed at $ 31,500.

Omega has released stunning new additions to its Planet Ocean Collection with the Seamaster Planet Ocean Ceragold watches. These professional dive watches exude performance and mechanical precision with a style for fashion.

The Omega Ceragold is a technology first that has allowed the bonding of 18-carat gold into zirconium-based ceramic. The result is an amazingly smooth finished ceramic bezel with a Ceragold diving scale.

The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ceragold Chronograph has used the Ceragold to showcase a beautifully designed bezel ring with a polished black zirconium-based ceramic. The contrast between the black and the Ceragold is stunning. Of course, the Seamaster Planet Ocean Ceragold watch comes with all the lovely dive features inherent in the Planet Ocean Collection:

  • Unidirectional rotating bezel
  • Helium escape valve
  • White Super-LumiNova coated indexes that emit a blue light
  • Minute hand and diving bezel that emit a green light

These features are truly unique and a definite benefit to all divers. The watches are also water resistant to 2,000 feet.

The Seamaster Planet Ocean Ceragold Chronograph is a gorgeous watch with an Omega Co-Axial caliber 9301 for a heart. This proprietary co-axial movement allows the adjustment of the hour hand without upsetting the operation of the minute or seconds hand. This is a gift to those owners who tend to change time zones. The dial of the chronograph is a smooth black with two sub-dials, one at three o’clock for the 60-minute and 12-hour counters and one at the nine o’clock for seconds. A black leather strap with an 18-carat gold foldover clasp finishes this chronograph.

The second amazing new watch in the Planet Ocean Collection is the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ceragold White Planet St. Moritz. While the chronograph was all about the color black, the St. Moritz is all about white. Fitting that it is therefore named after the town of St. Moritz in the Swiss mountains where Omega is involved with timing world-renowned bobsleigh races.

The heart of the St. Moritz is an Omega Co-Axial caliber 8501. It is equipped with an 18-carat red gold rotor and balance bridge. This beautiful timepiece comes with a matte white dial with Ceragold bezel and numeral highlights. Engraved on the caseback are: Si14, Ceragold, White Planet and St. Moritz. The Si14 is a reference to the St. Moritz silicon balance spring. The white leather strap with an 18-carat gold foldover clasp completes the timepiece.

Omega has dazzled us again with their Ceragold Planet Ocean additions. The fusion of materials is simply a masterpiece. The Seamaster Planet Ocean Ceragold Chronograph and White Planet St. Moritz are two timepieces that guarantee satisfaction and a feeling of luxurious fashion.

PumaMarMostro
PUMA Powered by BERG – Yacht: Mar Mostro

If you haven’t been following the Volvo Ocean Race you missed America’s sailing team PUMA power by BERG (PUMA is a sportslifestyle and watch manufacturing company), make all the right moves in leg four of the race. In what could become a defining moment in the annals of yachting as well as for PUMA’s ocean racing team, skipper Ken Read chose to sail Mar Mostro out of the South China Sea toward Tokyo, north the complete opposite direction of leg four’s finish in Auckland, New Zealand.

PUMA’s daring move was a strategic effort to place them in the lead of leg four against Spain’s sailing team, Telefonica, which has won legs one, two and three of the Volvo Ocean Race. PUMA being tied in fourth place of leg four and in dire need of points especially after Mar Mostro’s mast broke during leg one had nothing to lose by taking, what the media has labeled, this gamble on Saturday (February 25).

PUMA Mar Mostro broken mast
PUMA Powered By BERG Yacht Mar Mostro’s Broken Mast

Skipper Read sought out winds in Tokyo which pushed them north speeding with the wind at 22 knots, while the other yachts sailed upwind at 11-15 knots. Read said in an interview, “This is a long-term strategy, not a short-term one.” He further elaborated that PUMA would sail in an arc (boomerang around) to hopefully meet up ahead of the other yachts.

PUMA’s strategic move paid off Sunday morning. PUMA went from being 250 nm (nautical miles) behind to less than 100 and continues to be the fastest yacht in the fleet. Needless to say the team is in high spirits with this amazing feat. While PUMA remains in fourth place, they are celebrating the gutsiest move that has now placed PUMA’s nautical miles to less than 100 something to smile about indeed.

Ranking as of Leg Three:

  • Telefonica (Spain) remains in first place with 101 points;
  • Camper /ETNZ (Spain/New Zealand) is in second place with 83 points;
  • Groupama (France) is in third place with 73 points;
  • PUMA power by BERG (U.S.) is in fourth place with 53 points;
  • Abu Dhabi (U.A.E.) is in fifth place with 43 point;
  • Sanya (China) is in sixth place with 17 points.

Volvo Ocean Racing has been referred to the “Mount Everest of Ocean Racing” and if anyone agrees with that assessment it would be PUMA powered by BERG. The adversity they faced when Mar Mostro’s mast broke in the first leg was undoubtedly disturbing as well as spirit breaking. However, perseverance and ingenuity has proven to be the wind in Mar Mostro’s sails (pun intended). It is their team spirit that has helped PUMA powered by BERG make all the right moves, and hopefully such strategic moves will be to their advantage throughout this ocean race. Leg four is expected to finish approximately on March 8.
