There is a reason that they are regularly considered the archetypes of the the modern wristwatch. But, say the year is 1942 and you aren’t very happy with a perfect case and idealic symmetry to your wristwatch’s dial. Say, you want strange scroll lugs and an oversized minutes register that just doesn’t seem to make any sense. Well, then you’d be the person responsible for the watch above – a completely unique and totally bizarre Patek Philippe chronograph reference 1491.

For most of us watch collectors and enthusiasts, watchmakers are something special. We see white coats, clean and laboratory-like environments, small loupes and even smaller parts. In the big world outside of our domain of luxury watches, people probably don’t even know what a watchmaker does these days. To us, watchmakers are like rock stars. Some of them even seem to have groupies.
Most of the time you read about watchmakers, they are either independent watchmakers or not mentioned by name. A lot of big name brands have certain people that they want to push forward to the media, not the actual watchmakers who make sure your watch is working perfectly.
Girard-Perregaux seems to break that rule and introduces a few of their young watchmakers to you. Like Jean-Luc Borel, he is a watchmaker at GP and plays the Alphorn in his spare time. Actually, some years ago, he won the Alphorn World Championship. GP zooms in on a few of their young watchmakers are let them introduce themselves to you.
All this is part of a program from GP that is being called ‘The Girard-Perregaux Young Watchmakers Tour‘ where you can meet with them, discuss with them and participate in one-on-one workshops. The tour starts in New York and will also be held in Beijing, Paris and several other cities around the world.

LEFT: Royal Oak Ref 5402 Circa 1972 RIGHT: Royal Oak Ref 15202 Circa 2012I love the Royal Oak Jumbo, I think that is pretty clear by now. So when we were showed the new RO’s from AP yesterday at SIHH, I just had to bring along my own early Royal Oak to see how the new Jumbo would compare. My RO is an A-Series, that dates to 1972 – that’s the watch at left. The watch at right is the brand new 15202 Jumbo with “AP” at 6 o’clock, a watch that was literally introduced to the world first just 24 hours ago here on HODINKEE, and won’t hit stores for some time.
These watches are 40 years apart, but it doesn’t look like it, right? They are incredibly similar, and use the exact same movement. The case at right is the same diameter but one millimeter thicker because it uses a sapphire caseback. The most noticeable difference between these two watches are the size of the font used for “Audemars Piguet,” the black background for the date window in the new guy, and the slightly larger tapisserie pattern on the dial. But, essentially, these watches are all but identical, despite the four decade age difference. And that’s exactly how it should be for the watch that changed it all.
