Bell & Ross has been a busy bee, opening its ninth worldwide boutique in Central Hong Kong. Bell & Ross made their first Asian appearance back in February 2010 with a retail store in Singapore. Later, they opened boutiques in Malaysia, Beijing and Indonesia and experienced so much success that it sought out Central Hong Kong, an area that is known for high luxury shops and entertainment, to complete its Asian tour. The B&R shops feature man-friendly surroundings, lush leather furniture, and UV lighting in some areas to show off glow-in-the-dark features. In addition to opening physical boutiques throughout Asia and the world, B&R also opened an online store through the popular social networking site, Facebook where users can buy anything from B&R’s vintage pieces to clasps, wristbands and changing tools. Facebook users do not, however, receive any kind of discount for merely being fans of Bell & Ross and most price points for watches hover around the $ 5000 mark.

Recently at the Traditional Jewelers Annual Watch Faire, Bell & Ross was a huge hit with the crowd, showcasing their Aviation, Marine, Tourbillon and Vintage collections. Additionally, the watch company took full advantage by unveiling the Bell & Ross Harley Davidson Custom Nascafe Racer for the first time in a United States venue. The Nascafe Racer pays homage to the original by pairing Bell & Ross’ avant garde BR 01 Carbon timepiece mounted just above the fuel tank of the original Racer created by England Harley dealer Shaw Harley-Davidson. Shaw technicians use anodized blue and carbon fiber to fixate the B&R timepiece to the bike that toured the U.S.

Bell & Ross introduced their four collections at the U.S trade show. The Aviator and Tourbillion both feature carbon fiber dials, scratch-resistant sapphire crystals and an alligator and rubber strap on the Tourbillion while the Aviator’s strap pairs carbon fiber and rubber for ultimate durability. The Marine is a certified diver’s choice with guaranteed water-resistance of up to 500 meters with a screwed down crown and decompression valve and features mechanical automatic movement and a 44 mm satin-brushed steel case. The classic styling of Bell & Ross’ Vintage takes the cake with its sleek design, easy-to-read simple dial, wire lugs that give the formidable appearance of horns, complete with a croco-leather strap.

Bell & Ross watches are purely the result of a dynamic marketing campaign. Since their movement isn’t even made in-house, I have a hard time even considering spending anywhere near $ 5000 on another brand that’s “famous because I said so!”

Now the Harley…that’s another story.

An inspirational watch that speaks classic, yet exclusive, beauty has been unveiled. IWC Schaffhausen has released the gorgeous blue Portofino Chronograph Special Edition in honor of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.

IWC is a high-end Swiss watch company that was founded in 1868. Florentine Ariosto Jones was an American who immigrated to Schaffhausen, Switzerland with the intention of combining Swiss craftsmanship with modern U.S. engineering technology. IWC went through many turbulent times but eventually became a successful watch company known for their high quality timepieces.

IWC joined forces with Laureus, a non-profit organization that links sport and social commitment at the very top level. The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation uses sport as a method of aiding underprivileged children and young teens towards a better future. For the past five years, IWC has created a limited edition watch designed expressly to aid the Foundation. Each year a children’s drawing contest is held among all the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation projects worldwide. The topic “Time to inspire” was used this year as motivation for participants aged 4 through 16. The winner was a 7 year old from Sri Lanka who was part of the Seenigama Sport for Life project. The picture depicted four young girls happily playing without a care in the world. This winning illustration is engraved onto the case back of the special edition watch.

A young man plays violin at a Gucci event

Gucci helps give musical opportunities to Chinese students

Gucci isn’t all about exquisite watches and beautiful clothing. This year, the high fashion giant has started its year out on the right foot: one of giving. In collaboration with the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation, The GRAMMY Awards and The Recording Academy,  Gucci launched the Gucci Timepieces & Jewelry Music Fund in order to “discover and nurture talented musicians across China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.”

Gucci is no stranger to supporting the arts. In fact, the brand has shown its dedication with their longstanding support of director Martin Scorcese’s The Film Foundation, a non-profit that aims to restore and present groundbreaking and influential films. In the realm of music, according to Gucci’s website, the Gucci-GRAMMY initiative– founded in 2010– “help[s] to preserve historically significant moments and recordings from our global musical heritage.”

With the  Gucci Timepieces & Jewelry Music Fund, Gucci will be helping to give Chinese music students increased opportunities to hone their craft. Exceptional students, as judged by the Fund, will have the opportunity of traveling to the United States to participate in GRAMMY programs, like the GRAMMY Camp, that could help launch their careers. Beyond the music, the opportunity to travel to the U.S. will provide Chinese students with a wonderful chance for enriching cultural exchange, another primary goal of the Fund.

One of Gucci’s partners in this venture, the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation, has quite a bit of influence in China– and around the world. The organization, started in honor of the late Honorary President of the People’s Republic of China Soong Ching Ling, is dedicated to a number of positive social ventures that range from promoting international friendships to alleviating poverty to promoting the arts and sciences. With Gucci, The GRAMMY Awards, and The Recording Academy at their side, there is little doubt that the foundation will continue to spread its good deeds to many people in need.

The Gucci Timepieces & Jewelry Music Fund was launched at an elegant event in Hangzhou, China at the Hangzhou Theatre, where a number of VIP guests, including press, were welcomed for an evening of entertainment and the official unveiling of the project. Popular international movie star Li Bing Bing attended the event wearing several Gucci pieces, and students from some of China’s most prestigious music academies provided the entertainment for the evening.

Baume et Mercier's Linea Collection

Baume et Mercier's Linea Collection lets wearers become designers

Written by: Vanessa Formato

Baume et Mercier knows a thing or two about what women want. The brand has been making watches for the discerning woman for years, and 2012 will mark the launch of some beautiful and technically impressive new pieces into their Linea line.

One the biggest selling points for the Linea watches is their supreme versatility. Unlike many other watches, the Linea is designed with the wearer’s unique personality in mind. A large number of the watches in the Linea collection feature interchangeable bracelets. Buying a high quality watch can seem like a huge commitment, but the interchangeable band system ensures that buyers will be able to love their watches long into the future. The Linea is a watch that changes with its owner. The new additions to the Linea collection will offer a number of new bracelets.

Perhaps most importantly, Baume et Mercier refuses to sacrifice function for form. Several of the Linea watches come with automatic movements that can be viewed through a sapphire case at the back of the watch. While interest in the inner workings of watches might be stereotyped as masculine, Baume et Mercier is not buying it, and with craftsmanship as excellent as the Linea it would be a shame to hide away the details.

“The new Linea needed to be radically innovative, and not just in terms of its design,” said Alexandre Peraldi, Director of the Baume et Mercier Design Studio according to an article on website Europa Star. “Over the past few years we have seen an increased interest from women for automatic movements. This is hardly surprising, since they involve a fascinating level of craftsmanship and are perfectly in line with the idea of sustainability.”

In 2012, the Linea collection will celebrate its 25th anniversary. Baume et Mercier has been making women’s watches for much longer than 25 years, however, with some of the earliest designs dating back to the 1800s, when founder Louis-Victor Baume created a handmade watch in celebration of his daughter’s communion.

Baume et Mercier is one of the most respected makers of women’s watches around the globe. The luxury watch brand will also be showing its most recent innovations– in men’s watches as well– at SIHH 2012 in Geneva alongside other big names in the watchmaking industry.

Among the sea of music award shows in existence today, the Grammy awards are considered to be the best of the best with their Album of the Year award being one of the most prestigious awards to be given to an artist. The Grammy awards sets itself apart from the other reward shows as it is presented by The Recording Academy and does not award artists based on sales or their position on music charts but artistic achievement instead.

The actual Grammy award is a small, gold gramophone which is instantly recognizable. The same could be said for the classic Gucci logo with the interlocked double G as well as the eye-catching red and green stripes inspired by traditional saddle girths that can be seen on many of their leather goods and accessories. Gucci epitomizes the luxurious and glamorous lifestyle with their gorgeous leather luggage and handbags as well as jewelry and apparel. The classic Gucci handbag could be considered the quintessential high-end lifestyle accessory. The same could be said for Gucci watches as they appear quite different from traditional luxury watchmakers. Gucci combines fashion and style with each of their timepieces making their watches an accessory and a timekeeping tool.

Gucci and Grammy: A Timeless Collaboration

Although each organization belongs to two very distinct and separate categories in the world, the two companies actually share some common ground. Both the Grammy awards and Gucci have been at the top of their respective industries for over 50 years and counting. The two companies are both philanthropic with both parties deeply involved in charities. In 2011, there was a rare musical treasure found in a warehouse that housed thousands of hours of undiscovered musical recordings. Gucci teamed up with the Recording Academy to help preserve these recordings and digitize them for a later release for the public to enjoy.

Another big milestone alliance between the two parties was the announcement of a limited three-year partnership between Gucci and the Grammy Awards. There was an exclusive I-Gucci watch as well as a line of special jewelry created to commemorate this partnership. The I-Gucci watch is Gucci’s first digital watch which can change looks instantly from a two time zone dial with enlarged numerals to a more streamlined and discreet version with digital hands showing the local time only. The rubber strap bears the famous gramophone along with the double G logos. Gucci reports that the edgy look of the watch was inspired by music itself. Perhaps Gucci took a  cue from composer Aaron Copeland in their design when he said “To stop the flow of music would be like the stopping of time itself, incredible and inconceivable.”

With the expanding interest in both wrist top computing and integrated fitness watches it is of little surprise that CES would be host to some interesting new product announcements. Magellan, widely known for their handheld and in-car GPS solutions, launched their Switch and Switch Up series of fitness watches in a pre-CES press release this past Friday.

As you might imagine, the functionality of both the Switch and Switch UP watches hinges on their use of integrated GPS technology. The Switch is the entry range model and is intended for use with runners and offers a high resolution 1.26 inch display, eight hour battery life, 50 m water resistance and GPS connectivity. That connectivity will provide the Switch with distance, route and speed information which can be cross-referenced with caloric use or data from ANT+ systems like heart rate monitors, bicycle speed/cadence sensors and foot pods. The Switch UP series will build on the base model by adding a barometer, altimeter, thermometer, vibrating alarms and a “quick release mounting system to easily transition  between sports”. This modular ability will allow the user to remove the main unit from their wrist and mount it on the handlebars of a bicycle.

The Switch line up also integrates an Activity Pacer which will track and manage fitness goals for the owner who can create up to nine different profiles depending on the sport or activity in which they are engaging. All of the data collected by the Switch or Switch Up can be uploaded (via USB) to Magellan’s website and can be used in a variety of soon-to-be-released web applications.

Launching this Spring the Switch series will cost between $ 249 and $ 349 USD depending on model and bundled accessories. Whether you’re a talented athlete or just looking for a good excuse to get out and on your feet, the Switch series seems like a rather complete solution for tracking your progress. For additional details, please see the original press release here.
