Some of the most fit horses in the world and their riders competing in the cross country portion of the 2009 Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event, probably the most exciting phase of this international ‘horse triathlon’. The top three were Headley Brittannia wth rider Lucinda Fredericks (Australia), Ringwood Cockatoo with Bettina Hoy (Germany), and My Boy Bobby with Bruce ‘Buck’ Davidson Jr (USA). Davidson was also competing against his father, who won the first Kentucky International Three Day Event in 1978. This course was 6.27 Km (almost 4 miles) long, with 44 jumping efforts (depending on how you count) spread out over 30 obstacles, and an optimum time of 11 minutes. Designed by Mike Etherington-Smith. This event was held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, showing off some of its splendid new facilities in preparation for the 2010 World Equestrian Games. On this day the weather was warm and sunny, with gusty winds making for unsteady camera work. I hope by 2010 they’ll serve Mint Juleps at Rolex and the WEG. My condolences to Mike Winter and the King Pin eventing team. King Pin collapsed and died at obstacle 10, from “a hemorrhage of the large vessels in the abdomen unrelated to any jumping effort or trauma, said Dr. Christiana Ober, the Canadian Eventing Team veterinarian. This is a very rare condition and the actual cause is unknown.” Mike Winter was not seriously hurt. More information about this sport can be found here: useventing.com http This video was shot with

Longines is now the official timekeeper and timepiece maker of the Kentucky Derby and its track Churchill Downs. For this year’s esteemed horse race Longines will present one of their newer Column-Wheel Chronograph watches to the winner of the race.

Longines – part of the Swatch Group – worked with ETA (also part of the Swatch Group) to develop a special movement for Longines that captured the classic nature of the traditional watch brand. The movement is an automatic chronograph, but one that uses a historic column-wheel transmission system in the movement. Column-wheel chronographs are those found in many of the best chronograph movements.

Set in a steel case, the Ref. L2.733.4.72.2 Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph is extremely classic in its execution and design. The case is 39mm wide in steel, with a brown alligator strap. The exclusive movement inside of the watch is the mechanical caliber L688.2 which provides the tricompax chrono subdial layout. The dial design is extremely classic. In fact the entire watch is more or less a recreation of a classic Longines watch design. The dauphine hands have thin strips of lume, and there are applied hour and minute markers. For a bit of nostalgia the piece is very nice, price is $ 2,850.

Longines, now the official timekeeper of the Kentucky Derby and its home track Churchill Downs, recently was able to award the winners of the 2011 Kentucky Derby with a Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph watch. Longines recorded a winning time of 2.04 minutes as the running time for “Animal Kingdom” the winning horse. The Swiss brand rewarded the horse owner Barry Irwin, jockey Johnny Velazquez, and trainer Graham Motion each with the classically inspired timepiece. The link above will take you to a previous article that discusses the piece further along with Longines’ involvement with them famous horse race. Participation with the well-known high-society event is important to the historic brand that is fighting for a larger share of the US high-end watch market. It is also part of an overall trend of watch brands taking more of a key role in popular US cultural events.

Question by Cyndi L

My granddaughter and I just finished watching the Kentucky Rolex Equestrian Competition on ESPN. There are 3 events, the Dressage, the Cross Country, and the Stadium jumping. We would like to know the individual winners in each event, what each event is and what is required in each event. Also, we would like the top three final winners of this competition, the riders name, the horses name and the score. Thanks, Cyndi 5/7/06

You can find all of your answers on the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event website, www.rk3de.org. If your grandaughter is interested in eventing, might I suggest looking at the Pony Club website, www.pcuk.org. My daughter is an eventer and enjoyed being a member of the United States Pony Club.

Question by Dreamy99: Anyone else stuck watching hockey instead of the Rolex Kentucky?
Needless to say I’m pretty much pissed right now. I know this happens on occasion but to have waited for this recap for so long only to have it overrun by hockey overtime has gotten me pretty frustrated right now. Does anyone know if they will air it at a different time or if that was our only chance? Anyway, I vented some of my frustration with the nbc customer service. It’s pretty refreshing actually so if anyone wants to let out some anger here’s the place to do it.

Anyway, I just wanted to see if I was the only one out there who was disappointed and to see if theres anyway to watch the recap like on the internet or something. Thanks

I know I went to turn it on and I saw hockey. I was pretty annoyed. I don’t know if they will show it again but I sure hope they do and at a time that I can watch it.

Know better? Leave your own answer in the comments!
