Last weekend, the 24 hours of the Nürburgring were raced and Fratellowatches was there with Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aston Martin. Besides enjoying the race and the finish of the Aston Martin team, there was also some time and room to view the Jaeger-LeCoultre collection and follow a short master class in watchmaking.

Aston Martin Nurburgring 24 hours

Before entering the Aston Martin terrace in the Dorint Hotel at Nürburgring with the most perfect view on the racing track, I followed the short master class on watchmaking given by one of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s watchmakers from Le Sentier. They brought their work bench to the racing track and with the sound of super sports cars in the back ground, I tried disassembling and assembling the power-reserve gear work of one of their Reverso movements.

After doing so successfully, a short tour around the Jaeger-LeCoultre watches who were on display was given to me by their marketing manager of the Benelux. Besides a number of AMVOX watches (including the Tourbillon), Jaeger-LeCoultre also showed the new Master Control models. More about those in another blog post. The AMVOX watches are the product of a long lasting relationship between Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aston Martin.

Some of the AMVOX watches are even on the option list when buying an Aston Martin car, like the JLC AMVOX Rapide Transponder.

After a tour along all the JLC watches, we headed to the terrace to see the 24 hours of Nürburgring. At exactly 16:00, the race ended and the Aston Martin cars passed the finish line. The Aston Martin V12 Zagato and two Vantage GT4S took podium places.

Today we have a brand new Jaeger-LeCoultre diving watch.  It’s called the Deep Sea Chronograph, and it is the modern extension of the Deep Sea line, of which, up until today, we’ve only seen vintage variations - the Deep Sea Alarm tribute of 2011 and the Deep Sea Vintage Chronograph.

It is with this new, three register, 42mm automatic chronograph that we see the Deep Sea line will not be for tributes only, but will encompass the entire JLC sport watch family.  Yes, this watch resembles the Deep Sea Vintage chronograph, but ultimately, this watch is very modern (we show you the two side by side, below).  It features sapphire glass, a rotating bezel, no faux-aged lume, and water resistance to 10 bar.  It’s larger than the vintage guys by about 1.5mm, and complies with all the criteria imposed on diver’s watches by the ISO 6425 standard.

Inside this new chrono is the JLC caliber 758 featuring with a 65-hour power reserve.  But, perhaps the most noticeable trait of this new JLC Deep Sea Chronograph is the activation aperture  that sites below 12 o’clock.  This display allows the wearer to know, without a doubt, if the chronograph is running, stopped, or ready to be used.  This is how it works:

Dutch movie ‘Jackie’, which is in the theaters as of today, is about two twin sisters who have been raised by their father, who receive a phone call one day from their – unknown – biological mother who lives in the US. The twin sisters, played by Carice (a.o. Valkyrie) and Jelka van Houten are sisters in real life as well. Both wear a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Lady in this movie.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Lady

Jaeger-LeCoultre have been favored in movies numerous times. What about Justin Timberlake wearing a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control in Bad Teacher, or Pierce Brosnan wearing a Reverso Duoface in the Thomas Crown affair. In the original Thomas Crown Affair (1968), Steve McQueen appearantly wore a Jaeger-LeCoultre as well. The Memovox.

Anyway, as soon as we get some decent stills from the movie where you can see the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Lady in steel, we will post them here on Fratellowatches.

Last year, Jaeger-LeCoultre celebrated the roots of the Reverso with a limited edition model of the Tribute To 1931 called the “US Limited Edition”.  This watch closely resembled the standard production TT 1931 Reverso but took on a slightly more historic tone, with a warmer shade to the hands and hour markers, and slightly different script on the dial.  But, what made the limited edition of 100 US Edition Reverso stand out (see our detailed ruminations on it here here) and made it one of the hottest selling watches of 2011 for JLC was the strap on which it came.

You see, the strap that came on the US Edition of the TT 1931 Reverso was hand-made by Casa Fagliano – and Casa Fagliano is the leading producer of championship grade polo boots in the world.  But when we say “leading” we certainly don’t mean they make the most – in fact, they make but 90 pairs of boots per year – by “leading” we mean that they are regarded the world over as the finest riding boots money can buy.  They are made by hand in the suburbs of Buenos Aires just as they were four generations ago, and with the US Edition Reverso, the 100 lucky owners would be granted access to the exclusive club of Casa Fagliano.

With the 2011 edition, all 100 watches came with a black, hand-stitched shell cordovan Fagliano strap.  And this year, Jaeger-LeCoultre invited us down to Buenos Aires to get an early look at the second iteration of the Fagliano strap for the Reverso.

The first Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Compressor I laid my hands on was a Master Compressor Memovox in 2004 and as far as I recall, there were no other Compressor models at that time. I really liked it – and still do – but it seems that the Master Compressor models in general are not as well received by collectors and enthusiasts as the more conservative Reverso and Master collections. I’ve tried and tested Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso and Master watches in the past, but never gave the Master Compressor really a chance.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Compressor Geographic

In the past, we’ve reviewed a couple of Jaeger-LeCoultre watches, like the Gyrotourbillon, the Reverso Gyrotourbillon 2, the Master Minute Repeater, Master Tourbillons and the Reverso Classique. The Master Compressor only got a bit of attention with this photo essay on the Navy Seals Alarm Beverly Hills Boutique edition. However, we never did a hands on review on the Master Compressor before.

Jaeger-LeCoultre was able to hand over a Master Compressor Geographic that I could test and try for a few weeks. The Geographic has always been one of my favorite Jaeger-LeCoultre complications as I have this weak spot for world timer watches. It is a very useful complication, especially when you are traveling through different time zones for business or just for fun. Just to keep track of your home time (to try fight the jet lag) or to stay in touch with people that are in different time zones than yours during their (and your) ‘normal’ hours.

Jaeger-LeCoultre 1718170

In the past, I’ve been looking at the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Geographic a couple of times, but found it a bit too small for me (diameter = 39mm). This made me even more curious about the Master Compressor Geographic, with a diameter of 41.5mm a perfect modern time companion that will fit most men.

One of the first things you will notice when putting on the JLC Master Compressor ref. Q1718170 are the two large crowns. Jaeger-LeCoultre uses a ‘compressor’ system to make these watches water resistant. In the case of the Geographic, two crowns are being protected and need to be ‘secured’ or ‘unsecured’ by turning the first part – let’s call it the wings of the crown because they are shaped that way – of the crown 180 degrees. You will see that the white arrow on the crown will become a pair of red arrows instead, meaning that it is unsafe to use under water.

Master Compressor Geographic

Unscrewing the lower crown will rotate the city disc. You can choose (for example) New York and the small hour hand on the sub dial will change to that time zone, this way you don’t have to know the difference in time zones by hours when setting the time zone but just select the city of the country or part of the country you are in. Other time zone watches require you to exactly know the time zone (in hours) of a certain city or place, the Master Compressor Geographic makes it a lot easier for you. The city disc aperture at 6 o’clock is large enough to see some other cities besides the selected one. Perhaps this is done for design reasons, but I also like the fact that you see some other time zones as well, to give a bit of a reference or orientation.

The upper crown sets the ‘regular’ time and the hands of the second time zone sub dial will change along, however, the difference (if any) between the hour hands will remain as set (by having used the lower crown). It may sound a bit complex at first, but it is a very easy system to use and prefer it above some other world timers I’ve seen that require you to do the calculation yourself.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Compressor Geographic

Besides being a very functional and useful watch for travelers, it is also a watch that can be used for displaying time in an elegant way for those who stay at home or don’t travel at all. The AM/PM aperture on the left side of the center indicates whether it is before or after Noon of course. This feature is quite useful for a world timer as you might get confused whether it is earlier or later in the other time zone.

JLC Master Geographic

The back of the watch is perhaps just as impressive as the wonderful black dial. Although Jaeger-LeCoultre’s caliber 923 movement would probably be impressive to look at as well, they chose to show that this watch has been tested for 1000 hours with respect to the accuracy of the movement. You are probably all familiar with the COSC (chronometer) certification for movements, but Jaeger-LeCoultre takes the extra step in tightening the range of deviation (-1/+6 seconds per day instead of -4/+6 seconds per day). Furthermore, Jaeger-LeCoultre is testing the movement for accuracy, temperature changes and shocks where the movement is already fitted in the watch case. COSC is only testing the spare movement, which is later on fitted into the watch case by the watch manufacturer again.

Jaeger-LeCoultre develops and manufactures their own movements, as they have done for many many years. They also provide some of their movements to other brands as well. Jaeger-LeCoultre is a true manufacturer and take pride in what they do and have accomplished. Their movements range from time-only function to very impressive complications, as referred to in the beginning of this article (f.e. Gyrotourbillon, Minute Repeater etc).

JLC Master Compressor Geographic

After two weeks of wearing this watch on a daily basis, there are a few things I can conclude. First of all, the size is perfectly balanced for a sports watch. I also wear my 40mm Rolex Sea-Dweller some times, and that is starting to look a bit too small these days whereas my 39mm Royal Oaks fit me perfectly (they look & feel bigger due to the large lugs and integrated bracelet). So, for a round case, 41.5mm is definitely making sense to me.

Something else that I really enjoyed during these two weeks is the beautiful dial. The black dial with large white numerals and hour markers are great and the sub dials – although not positioned symmetrically – seems to be in balance. The dial still looks clean to me for a world timer watch. The AM/PM and city disc aperture are also very well positioned on the dial and provide perfect readability.

The Master Compressor has two things that made me wonder (before wearing it) whether I would like them or not. The stainless steel bracelet is the first aspect. Although I love bracelets, this bracelet is polished and looks a bit too shiny for my taste. The construction of the bracelet is perfect though and the clasp did not fail during the review period. Personally, I would pick this JLC Geographic with a leather strap (which changes the reference number into Q1718470). Brown calf or an alligator strap, I think both are available at Jaeger-LeCoultre.

The other aspect are the compressor setting crowns on the right side of the case. At first I thought they would be a bit too big or ‘out there’. However, they suit the watch perfectly, are easy to operate and they didn’t have the habit of sticking into my hands (something that other large crowns do).

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Master Compressor Geographic comes in a few versions. The version as reviewed here, with stainless steel bracelet, has a price tag of 11.200,- Euro. The version that I’d prefer, with a leather strap, has a price tag of 9.900,- Euro. Then there is a beautiful Master Compressor Geographic in rose gold, with a price tag of 36.500,- Euro. The watch I reviewed here doesn’t come cheap, but compared to other world timer watches of true watch manufacturers it is not that steep.

Thanks to Jaeger-LeCoultre for providing the watch. Make sure to visit their Facebook page as well.

Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso GMT 18 Jaeger LeCoultre Grande Reverso Duoface Watch Review

As I write this review I am actually freshly back from a visit of the Jaeger-LeCoultre manufacture in Le Sentier, Switzerland. In the watch industry the Jaeger-LeCoultre manufacture is considered a special place because it is a serious factory where both cases and movements are made – which is a rare combo. I got to see a lot of Reverso cases being produced and realized just how complex they are to manufacture. A simple case requires dozens of steps that involve both hand and machine work. The efforts are necessary to achieve the right shape, polish, and of course unique case flipping mechanism.

The original Reverso was produced in 1931 for British polo players stationed in India. The elite group wanted a watch they could wear while playing the game without too much risk of damage. At the time watch crystals were mostly glass and were relatively fragile. The Reverso case was designed to flip over and reveal a polished piece of solid metal to protect the crystal on the other side. The flipping case mechanism has of course been modernized a bit, but retains the same basic system as developed about 80 years ago. Last year Jaeger-LeCoultre fervently celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Reverso which involved the release of many new models, limited editions, and a closer look at the heritage of the watch. For review I had the pleasure of checking out one of the newer pieces – the Grande Reverso Duoface (also sometimes just called “Duo”) timepiece (ref. Q374.24.21).

Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso GMT 7 Jaeger LeCoultre Grande Reverso Duoface Watch Review

The Reverso comes in a range of sizes and style. The largest of modern watches are the super-sized Reverso cases in Jaeger-LeCoultre’s highest end models such as the Gyrotourbillon II and the Triptyque. The Grande Reverso is a step down from that. The more square Squadra is a handsome sporty option as well. Then there are smaller men’s versions as well as a few sizes for the ladies. The Grande Reverso case is 32.15mm wide and about 52mm tall. That length of the case prevents it from looking small. I would not say that the piece wears large, but it certainly doesn’t feel petite. The Reverso is a super classic look. Those three horizontal lines in the case above and below the dial really make it look distinctive, and the overall look and feel of the piece is ultra-classy. No where will a Reverso look out of place.

The case flipping function is slick and well-engineered. Hell, the brand did have 80 years to work on it. There are spring-loaded ball bearings that help it move easily and snap securely into place. Originally the Reverso has a plain metal caseback. Jaeger-LeCoultre early-on realized that this space was useful for custom engravings, enamel paintings, etc… Today for example there is a special Reverso website where you can customize your own and Jaeger-LeCoultre will make it for you. The brand also realized that if they created complex movements, the watch could have two dials. This Duoface is a perfect example of one of those pieces.

Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso GMT 13 Jaeger LeCoultre Grande Reverso Duoface Watch Review

In this case Jaeger-LeCoultre decided to use each side as a different time zone. So this is a nice two timezone watch with the date. The idea is that you just flip over the watch to see the time zone elsewhere. One side has the time with subsidiary seconds dial and an open-date indicator. The other side has another time zone with a day/night indicator. That latter side would be use for what is often referred to as “home time.” It makes for a useful travel watch, and as a benefit each side is aesthetically different giving you the option to “wear it light or dark.”

Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso GMT 22 Jaeger LeCoultre Grande Reverso Duoface Watch Review

Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso GMT 14 Jaeger LeCoultre Grande Reverso Duoface Watch Review

Each dial is very much reminiscent of the Reverso’s historical look. The brand is careful to ensure that detailing is impressive by giving the dials machine engraving and crisp printing. The black colored dial also has luminant for night viewing. The best part is that the overall Reverso look is not only highly art deco in style, but also very legible and useful. It is hard to not be a Reverso fan. The design is timeless, looks good on most people, and even after all this time the flipping case concept is still fun. Others have tried to replicate the idea of a double sided watch, but no one does it better than JLC.

This particular Grande Reverso Duoface watch has an 18k rose gold case. There are steel versions as well but I have to say that gold suits the Reverso very well. I know there are 18k white gold versions, but you might as well just get a steel one at that point. If you go gold, go rose or pink gold for a case like this. The color looks great with both the silvered and black colored dials. The blued steel hands on the silvered dial are classic – and Jaeger-LeCoultre even flame blues their hands in-house.

Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso GMT 10 Jaeger LeCoultre Grande Reverso Duoface Watch Review

Pull the case to the side and you’ll see the perlage decorated back plate. It adds a nicely machined look and frames the rest of the case well. On the wrist the watch is extremely comfortable and feel slimmer than it is. It is very interesting to me how rectangular-shaped watches have a very distinct feel on the wrist compared to round watches.

If you are a guy who likes modern sized watches I don’t recommend going for a size any smaller than the Grande Reverso case. If it is still too small for you then check out a Squadra. Attached to the case is an alligator/crocodile strap. Of course it looks nice and I like how it is fitted directly to the case with very little gap. Funny how gaps between a strap and case keep some watches from looking their best. The deployant clasp on the strap is quite nice. It has a hidden fold-over deployant and what you see is just a very elegant rounded buckle piece. Very nice.

Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso GMT 8 Jaeger LeCoultre Grande Reverso Duoface Watch Review

Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso GMT 5 Jaeger LeCoultre Grande Reverso Duoface Watch Review

The majority of Reverso movements are manually wound. This has a lot to do with the space and style of the movement. Though there are a few automatic Reverso watches around. Jaeger-LeCoultre of course makes all of their own movements. The shame in a watch like this is that you can’t see the movement. Even opening up the case is something that only an expert should do. That makes sense as there are hands on both sides. For those wanting a more “pure” horological experience there are watches in the Grande Reverso range very similar to this piece that have an exhibition style caseback on the second dial side of the watch.

Inside this Grande Reverso Duoface is a Jaeger-LeCoultre caliber 986 manually wound movement. All features are controlled via the crown and it has a power reserve of about 48 hours. It is a slick movement and all I could have asked for in addition to the existing features would be a power reserve indicator. For me, I really like it when manually wound movements have those. Price for this excellent Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso Duoface watch is $ 19,300 in 18k rose gold and about $ 10,200 in steel. It is a classic, and an easy decision to own.

We’ve been doing our best to keep you up to date on the very best of Basel World 2012 (see posts here).  There will be literally dozes of more posts to come on the topic, but for now, we thought we’d show you something old in the middle of all the releases.  You are looking at an original Jaeger-LeCoultre Geophysic, from 1958.  This is a true cult watch among vintage collectors, and here’s why:

“1957 – 1958 was designated International Geophysical Year. This was an international scientific effort in which 67 countries took part in making observations and carrying out experiments in various aspects of the earth sciences such as seismology, electromagnetism, glaciology, radioactivity and solar activity. The Jaeger LeCoultreGeophysic” wristwatch was inspired by the Geophysical Year. To publicise the effort, watches were given to the crew of the the US Nautilus, the first nuclear powered submarine, after its trip under the North Pole in 1958. This watch was made to be anti-magnetic to 600 Gauss to combat the effect of magnetic fields that could disturb the timekeeping qualities of the watch. 1038 pieces were made in stainless steel and 30 in gold. After 1962, the Geophysic was fitted with an automatic movement and renamed the “Geomatic”.”

So what this what is is one of those 30 solid gold Geophysics.  And, the thing is entirely original and for sale tomorrow via Anquorum Geneva with an estimate of 8,000-12,000 CHF.  Perhaps the rarest trait of this original Geophysic is that it still retains its factory crystal.  A crystal isn’t a big deal in most cases, but on thish particular watch, the lume plots were actually applied to the crystal and not the dial – so in the vast majority of Geophysics you see for sale (which is rare in itself), you wont see any lume plots due to the replaced crystal.  Cool, no?

Click here for details and below for live photographs of 1/30 gold JLC Geophysics, a true cult classic.
