Well, we can’t say we saw this one coming.  The guys over at Timezone have just announced that the Gronefeld One Hertz has been named the Timezone Watch of the Year, upsetting such logical favorites as the Patek Philippe 5270 Perpetual Calendar Chronograph, The Jaeger-LeCoultre Grand Reverso Tribute to 1931, and the Vacheron Constantin Patrimony World Timer.

This is an important win for independent watchmakers everywhere, and what is so impressive is that we have to assume that the vast majority of the 29% of the TZ population that voted for the One Hertz has never even seen one!

Still, congratulations to Tim and Bart Grönefeld, two of the most talented watchmakers (and nicest guys) we know in the industry today.  Visit their official website here for more info and read our posts on Grönefeld from months past.

Here is a video of the Timezone award winning watch as explained by Tim and Bart Grönefeld themselves:

Celebrities, models and fashion icons throughout the world are choosing to accessorize themselves with trendy watches from the high-end luxury watch and clock manufacturer Jaeger LeCoultre.

The top ranking British Formula One driver Jenson Button was also spotted wearing a Jaeger LeCoultre timepiece – the Master Compressor Extreme LAB.

Jaeger LeCoultre Master Compressor Extreme LAB

Unlike many traditional watches, the Master Compressor Extreme LAB is powered by Jaeger LeCoultre Calibre 988C and is also the first completely lubricant-free timepiece. The watch is guaranteed to provide full performance for several years and features the ability to resist extreme temperatures. The timepiece also has two time zones, black-diamond pallet stones and a carbon and titanium design.

French fashion model and actress Elisa Sednaoui was seen wearing the Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso Duetto Duo watch in pink gold.

“Reverso to me is the perfect combination of elegance, minimalism and modernity,” said Sednaoui. It’s the effortless class, the true jewel, that makes you feel ultimately chic and strong. It has been a perfect companion, from day to day life till Venice’s red carpet…. And I believe it brought me lots of luck!”

The elegant timepiece features a stainless steel case, sapphire anti-reflective crystal material, 45-hour power reserve, mechanical manual winding movement and is available in a variety of different designs.

American actor Ezra Miller was seen sporting the Jaeger LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition Tourbillon With Perpetual Calendar watch.

This particular timepiece made for gentlemen features automatic calibre 987 movement, an alligator leather strap, perpetual calendar with moon phases, and is available in a variety of different cases.

Jaeger LeCoultre watches have also been spotted on actors Jon Hamm and Jeremy Renner, German actress and former fashion model Diane Kruger, Italian model and actress Margareth Made, British model and actress Kaya Scodelario and American singer, songwriter and actress Kelly Clarkson.

The Swiss luxury watchmaker originated in 1833 when Antoine LeCoultre founded a small workshop in Le Sentier, Switzerland where he crafted and manufactured high-quality timepieces. LeCoultre’s invention of the millionometer established the metric system as the standardized measurement for watches, and in 1847, the company produced the first movement with a crown winding system, which replaced the necessity for the use of keys to set the time.

The workshop soon turned into a manufacture, and within 30 years, LeCoultre had crafted over 350 different timepieces with chronograph functions and repeater mechanisms. The Jaeger LeCoultre brand was coined in 1937 when Edmond Jaegar challenged Antoine LeCoultre’s grandson to manufacture a timepiece from his own design.

Since the partnership began, Jaeger LeCoultre has produced high-quality, high-end luxury timepieces.

Diane Kruger wearing Jaeger LeCoultre with black band

Kruger got her first Jaeger LeCoultre for her 18th birthday

Actress and model Diane Kruger received her first Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso for her 18th birthday. This gift from her mother sparked Kruger’s love for luxury watches, a passion that has not only lasted through her illustrious career but granted her the honor of being the ambassador of Jaeger LeCoultre for almost four years.

The Reverso design originated in 1931 with British colonial army officers in mind: The watch’s case rotated to protect the dial from impacts while displaying the personalized and engraved back. Soon after this design came to light, another model adopted the concept and recreated the swiveling watch case with a feminine touch. Many different versions of the Reverso have been created since, but this Art Deco inspired model will always stand out through its unique elegance and style.

For the Reverso’s 80th anniversary last year, Jaeger LeCoultre celebrated femininity and the model’s personality by revealing a new design, the Grande Reverso Lady Ultra Thin. Diane Kruger, regarded as a woman that perfectly embodied the values of the Reverso, was chosen to be the face of this new watch. The mechanical, manually-wound Grande Reverso Lady Ultra Thin has 93 parts, 18 jewels and a 40-hour power reserve.

Kruger values time as of the essence, whether in work or simply just in life. “I am a stickler for timekeeping, so a watch is essential to me,” she says. Her feminine values also represent a breakthrough in the male-dominated luxury watch collector’s world: “It is something you can keep in the family as an heirloom to pass on to your children, which is incredibly important to a woman.”

As Kruger’s modeling and acting careers developed, her watch collection followed in suit. In 2007, Kruger found the perfect accent to her Venice Film Festival dress in the Jaeger LeCoultre Diamond 101 Joaillerie watch. She attended the 2009 Cannes Film Festival in a Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso Squadra Lady in pink gold, and subsequently donned the Jaeger LeCoultre Joaillerie 101 Art Deco watch to Cannes 2011.

Kruger visited the Manufacture Jaeger LeCoultre in June 2010, an experience that she says altered her entire view of watchmaking and especially her perception of the brand. “I had no idea how much expertise goes into making just one watch-each complication requires hours of craftsmanship,” she says.

Although Kruger has accumulated quite a few Jaeger LeCoultre pieces by now, one may wonder if she has a special love for a specific watch. The answer is that Kruger’s favorite is still her very first- the Reverso she received for her 18th birthday.

Proto Zero Master Grande Tradition a Repetition Minutes

The "Proto Zero" of Jaeger LeCoultre's limited edition Master Grande Tradition a Repetition Minutes

Jaeger LeCoultre recently unveiled its “Proto Zero” watches, to be sold exclusively at Hong Kong’s recently opened Jaeger LeCoultre Boutique at Heritage 1881. Jaeger LeCoultre is working in conjunction with the Hong Kong charity End Child Sexual Abuse Foundation (ECSAF), which will receive 10 percent of all the proceeds from the sale of the watch.

“Proto Zero” watches are essentially the hand crafted prototypes of a select number of limited edition watches in the Jaeger LeCoultre collection. They have been refurbished, tested for quality control and meet the exacting standards of Jaeger LeCoultre. The scarcity of these models combined with their historical significance make them coveted pieces for any serious collector. Typically, prototypes have been stored at the Jaeger-LeCoultre watch factory in Vallée de Joux, Switzerland, and are not sold.

The End Child Sexual Abuse Foundation is a non-governmental philanthropic organization initiated in 1998 by actress and clinical psychologist Josephine Siao. Says Jaeger LeCoultre CEO Jerome Lambert: “Jaeger-LeCoultre is proud to present the unique ‘Proto Zero’ to the connoisseurs of Hong Kong. We are particularly proud to support the charitable cause of End Child Sexual Abuse Foundation with these one-of-a-kind creations. We perceive this project as a meaningful collaboration between our brand and our supporters to join hands in contributing to a good cause.”

The “Proto Zero” watches available at the Heritage 1881 Boutique are:

  • Master Grande Tradition a Répétition Minutes: A hand-wound 44mm titanium, it features a sapphire case back and an alligator strap. It has a power reserve of 15 days and is water resistant to 50 meters.
  • Master Grande Tradition à Tourbillon 43: An automatic 43mm watch displayed in a platinum case.
  • Reverso Gyrotourbillon 2: Equipped as Jaeger LeCoultre’s pioneering reversible model, this piece’s case flips around so that the back can be displayed. A 36 mm x 55 mm x 15.8 mm with hand-winding mechanism.

The Heritage 1881 Boutique is the third Jaeger LeCoultre boutique in Hong Kong, and the first outside of the Vallee de Joux factory to feature the unique and aesthetically stunning “Wall of Movements.” The wall is an approximately 15 foot transparent display that exhibits the evolution of nearly two centuries of Jaeger LeCoultre’s collection of watch calipers. This formidable installation is just one of the many features that makes the Heritage 1881 Boutique such a point of pride for the Jaeger LeCoultre organization, and the perfect milieu for the “Proto Zero.”

After many sleepless nights of deliberation, it was time for a change. I sold my Lange 1815 to make room for something new in the collection. What would it be? After much hunting and poring over catalogs and visiting dealers, I decided on a Jaeger Le-Coultre Reverso Grande GMT (RGGMT from here on) in steel. The standard alligator strap wasn’t very flexible or comfortable for me, and left the watch sitting high, so I went for the bracelet model.

_3036170 copy

That was in early 2009. Two and a bit years on, am I still in love?

_3036201bw copy

_3036296bw copy

Let’s back up a little. There are three things that can happen to a watch after you’ve owned it for a while: either it grows on you, you like it as much as you did originally, or you grow bored of it and wonder what on earth possessed you to buy the damn thing in the first place. The 1815 was one of the former category. Living with it for six years just reaffirmed how much thought and refinement went into the design and execution of the watch. Would the RGGMT be the same?

_7038507 copy

_D90_DSC2532 copy

The RGGMT offers fantastic bang for the buck. Not only do you get an inhouse, shaped movement (the Cal. 878 with 276 parts), it has a useful complication – second timezone on a separate dial, settable by +/- pushers; it runs for eight days and displays remaining power reserve; day/night for the two timezones; subseconds; GMT offset of second timezone; and finally, a big date display. JLC also put them through their 1000 hour ‘Master Control’ timing and regulation test, which is evident in how well it keeps time. Oh, and it’s effectively two watches in one, because of the very different dials. What more could you ask for?

_3100_DSC0512bw copy

_D90_DSC2559 copy

Actually, a watch that shows both timezones on one face with a second hour hand is much easier to read. And one that puts the power reserve on the side which will be right side up when the crown faces your winding hand (the RGGMT shows it on the back dial, which means you have to wind the watch upside down or awkwardly with your left hand) would be nice. And generally I know whether it’s day or night, so those indicators aren’t generally that useful. I also found the second timezone quite useless when travelling to Nepal, which has a 5h 45 minute GMT offset (to be fair, though, almost all GMT watches would have this problem). There’s also the small matter of the case being made of steel so soft that all you have to do is merely look at it to induce a scratch. Oh, and the bracelet is made of the same material, too.

_780_IMG_1052b copy

_3100_DSC0542 copy

With all that criticism, you’d think I regret my purchase. On the contrary; it’s actually a very satisfying watch to own – I just don’t use it the way the makers intended. Both of my dials show the same timezone. The silver guilloche dial, with its blue hands and field of stars on the night portion of the day/night display, is a beautifully classical, elegant watch. I wear it on the bracelet for formal occasions, or with a soft Nomos cordovan strap for everyday use. The rear dial is matte black with pilot-style markings and luminous hands and indices; I found a rubber strap with vertical grooves that echo those in the case, completely changing the look of the watch into something much sportier – in the way a Royal Oak is both refined and rugged, I suppose.

_D90_DSC3249 copy

There’s also the sense of occasion you get when strapping it on, because the Reverso is really a piece of watchmaking history. Like everything else – cars especially – it’s gotten fatter and more complicated, but ultimately the DNA remains intact, and that’s what’s important.

_7038684 copy

What about the scratches? Well, I’ll go with the school of thought that says they are a mark of patina and character. (But I’ll still keep a Cape Cod handy for the times when it gets too much!)
