Industrial North Design from the United Kingdom designed and produced two watches, the Britannic and the Vanguard. In 2007, automotive stylists Andy Shaw and Rob Silkstone decided to produce watches using precision engineering. What about cutting solid pieces of stainless steel using a wire with 32.000 volts (EDM technique), to be able to maintain 0.002mm tolerances.

Industrial North Design

According to co-founder Rob Silkstone, the industrial heritage in Great Britain is something that should be part of the design of these watches. Both watches, the Britannic and the Vanguard are custom made by engineers that are also responsible for manufacturing precision parts for jet turbine engines for Rolls-Royce.

Vanguard

Industrial North Design also stresses that the sapphire crystals are from UK ground, the straps made to measure in England and that the mechanical movement (ETA2824 which we’ve seen in a lot of other brands as well) is being assembled and calibrated in the UK as well.

Britannic

The result of years of hard work is evident in their Britannic and Vanguard watches. They are exactly what they should be, representing this typical industrial look and breath Great Britain. What about the Fibbonacci spiral that has been etched in the dial of the Britannic? These watches are limited to 15 pieces each.

Caseback Britannic

Did I already mention I love solid case backs? I can imagine that – depending on the level of collecting – some people might find every movement interesting to see through a caseback, but I prefer to only peek at movements that are something special. I rather see something cool engraved in the stainless steel, like the Royal Oak chronographs from Audemars Piguet or the BR series from Bell & Ross. Therefor I love the case backs of these Industrial North Design watches. The screws give it an industrial edge, the ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ inscription is something fun and I love their logo.

The Industrial North Design Britannic and Vanguard watches are available for 2600 GBP (each). Custom work can be done as well, like a custom acid etched dial design (adds 600 GBP), a custom laser engraving on the back (600 GBP), custom made strap (400 GBP) or a made to measure strap (100 GBP). Also availble with PVD coating (sets you back 1800 GBP). Watches are available 6 – 8 weeks after ordering.

Have a look at their website for more detailed information and electronic brochure.

Entirely new this year from Vulcain is the 50s Presidents Chronograph Heritage.  Inspiration for the new watch comes from Vulcain’s early involvement with Spanish football team, Real Madrid, whose coach Francisco Bru used a Vulcain chronograph in training exercises for his players, and even credited the watch with helping them win the 1934 Spanish Championship. With a chronometer-certified movement, the new Presidents Chronograph Heritage continues the theme of precision timing, set to throwback good looks. Did we mention it’s a monopusher as well?

Raymond Weil maestro Quantieme a Aiguille

Raymond Weil maestro Quantieme a Aiguille

After devoting twenty-six years with a Geneva watch company, Raymond Weil decided to found his own company in 1976. The RAYMOND WEIL brand was born. Since then, Raymond has poured his expertise and heart into making his brand an international success. Maybe it is his two daughters who are performing artists that brought about his appreciation for music and the arts. Whatever his inspiration, the watchmaking industry has benefitted as his musical inclination has brought grace and beauty to his brand. The company continues its legacy with Raymond’s son-in-law and grandsons.

The maestro Quantieme a Aiguille is a classic luxury watch for the ages. It is housed in a steel case with a silver dial that is decorated with a sunray guilloche adornment in the main region and a concentric musical stave theme. It carries two indicators at 3 and 9 o’clock which display the temporal passage of the date and the seconds. Black Roman numerals mark the dial with blued steel hands to indicate the time. The back sapphire glass case exposes the watch mechanics armed with 33 jewel bearings. The maestro Quantieme a Aiguille produces 38 hours of power reserve. To finish the ensemble, it sports a brown alligator style strap.

Raymond Weil watches come in a myriad of styles and designs featured in their Ladies and Gents Collections. Many of the timepieces are dedicated to the arts:

  • Maestro
  • Othello
  • Amadeus
  • Fidelio
  • Traviata

The Othello Collection, celebrating Raymond Weil’s tenth anniversary and inspired by William Shakespeare, helped the brand in becoming an international success with its refined ultra-thin case. Raymond Weil continues its tribute to the arts and world of music through the brand’s extravagant advertising campaigns. The latest campaign was conducted in the lavish Victoria concert hall in Geneva where the models were featured wearing Raymond Weil watches. It expresses the family’s “true love, appreciation and respect for the arts.”

The maestro Quantieme a Aiguille showcases the refinement, workmanship and elegance that has made Raymond Weil an international brand. The family has continued its legacy of precision and timeless sophistication and grace. The Maestro Collection is all the finer with the maestro Quantieme a Aiguille in its portfolio.

With February making its first appearance in 2012, it’s still not too late to check out Cartier‘s new watch models they introduced to the market this year.

The Rotonde de Cartier Annual Calendar

The Rotonde de Cartier Annual Calendar

The Rotonde de Cartier Annual Calendar made its first appearance this year at the watch show in Geneve. It’s a very large time piece with a case measuring in at 45 millimeters. The watch offers a new capability in which the crown adjusts all functions of the watch. Two versions of this watch are available. The first is available with an 18-karat white gold case and a black leather strap. The other version is available in pink gold with a brown leather strap. The function that makes this watch so unique and appealing is the multi-layer dial. Each layer is in charge of keeping track of a specific time. The first layer of the dial contains a weekday scale. The next layer out contains roman numerals for displaying the current hour. After that one will see the month scale and then last but not least, a minute track that runs in the outside rim. By the 12 hour roman numeral, one can find a date window, another great calendar function of The Rotonde De Cartier Annual Calendar. This luxurious time piece contains blue sword shaped minute and hour hands that point to the hours while red hammer shaped hands with only the tips showing, point to the week and month scales.

The Rotonde de Cartier Perpetual Calendar

The Rotonde de Cartier Perpetual Calendar

The Rotonde de Cartier Perpetual Calendar is available in two versions just like the Rotonde de Cartier Annual Calendar. The first variation contains a polished round pink gold case. The other version offers a polished round white gold case. Both of the cases measure in at 40.5 millimeters in diameter, a decent average size watch that will fit just about any man. Both come with black alligator straps that contain gold clasps. The gorgeous silver dial is elegantly decorated with guilloche. The dial contains blue sword shaped minute and hour hands that point to large black roman numerals which indicate the hour. There is also a centrally located thin blue pointer that points to the date displayed on a circular scale inside of the outer rim. Located at the hour six, one will find a retrograde weekday indicator. Located at the hour twelve, one will find a disk that shows the month as well as a leap year. The crown is an absolutely stunning feature of the watch. It is decorated with cabochon blue sapphire and beads.

2012 has been good to Cartier so far, it will be difficult to top what they have accomplished thus far.

A lot of designers feel that the best time to introduce a new collection is the first part of the year. With the beginning of 2012 still in the present, one can expect to see several new lines coming out. Baume & Mercier happen to be one of those designers who feel that the first of the year is the best time to go public with new luxurious designs.

Baume & Mercier introduce new wrist watches this new year. New Baume & Mercier designs have been added to the Linea collection, the Hampton collection and the Capeland collection. These new luxury wrist watch lines are all Hampton inspired. The elegance and luxurious lifestyle of seaside living is presented through these brand new time pieces in a way that is sure to make every watch guru want to own one.

The Linea collection was first introduced by Baume & Mercier in 1987. The line has come a very long way since then. Watches in this collection are offered with a case diameter measuring at 27 mm or a case diameter measuring at 32 mm.  This 2012, Baume & Mercier added new watches to the 32 mm family, making note of the watches generous size. Also in the Linea collection, Baume & Mercier released a brand new trapezoidal diamond bezel setting, sure to attract many potential buyers.

The Hampton collection is the poster child for the Baume & Mercier brand.  Inspired by a museum piece dating back to the 1940′s, the Hampton collection gives off a sense of fine casual living to those who wear it. The Hampton collection is best known for its noticeably rectangular case that holds a certain vintage look. Before 2012, the men’s Hampton line did not contain a style offering a stainless steel bracelet. To complete the men’s line and to offer another watch to the women’s line, Baume & Mercier is releasing two new automatic models that have an ergonomic integrated polished and satin-finished bracelet with a new triple folding security clasp. The new security clasp is not only very simple to open but also safer.

The Capeland collection is yet another vintage inspired wrist watch line, which seems to be a big trend now in the fashion media. This collection was modeled after a 1948 single-push piece chronograph model. The Capeland collection is best known for its classic styled round case. 2012 has offered many new things to the Copeland collection such as new two toned colors for the dial and the addition of a larger case size.

2012 has been very kind to Baume & Mercier thus far. The luxurious designer brand is off to a great start.

New year, very new watches. Invicta‘s 2012 series watches are breaking the mold with designs quite like no other.

As a part of the Russian Diver Collection, Invicta has partnered with contemporary artists to design watch faces.

Native New Yorker, Erni Vales, and British artist, Nick Gentry, are commandeering this limited edition series by introducing a wave of novel looks for the watch company. These two artists collaborated in 2011, creating designs that are trendy and appealing to a younger audience.

Vales created 3 of his own timepieces for the 2012 series. All three watches have a colorful retro look, and a similar cartoon bear design on the watch dial.

Panda Suit

Invicta's Panda Suit timepiece.

They are called Lace Twin, Leather Twin and Panda Suit; and they are certainly not “suit and tie” watches. These contemporary timepieces have industrial-looking straps that are juxtaposed by their brightly colored watch faces and cartoon bears.

Lace Twin, Leather Twin and Panda Suit take a new spin on watches. They give them a third meaning. Not only can watches be for telling time or looking nice, but they can also have an artistic appeal. They can tell a story, or be a conversation piece.

Erni Vales’ timepieces are not made for the mundane businessman. They’re made for the skateboarder, rave-goer and modern art junkie. A whole new concept in watches.

Breaking the mold, so to speak, comes with no surprise from an artist who started out tagging on the subway cars of NYC. His work, now based out of Miami, is called “Evil World.”

Nick Gentry provides an equally novel contribution to Invicta’s contemporary art series.

Gentry is fascinated with the cyber culture of the 21st Century. He is well known in the contemporary art world for his floppy disk art – creating human faces out of a compilation of floppy disks. His bold artistic messages have gained Gentry the highest level of respect in the United Kingdom’s urban art scene.

Gentry designed one very sleek watch for Invicta. Taking the namesake of one of his paintings, The Secret Key Invicta watch is super classy and unusual.

Its watch dial is an interesting piece of art, and its case is rectangular and slightly arched.

The combination of its sleek leather strap and artistic interior will, perhaps, give this timepiece a broader audience.

Invicta’s art series introduces an exciting and refreshing look at watches, just in time for 2012.

Philip Stein was the first watch manufacturer to introduce ‘Natural Frequency Technology’ into its timepieces. It recently debuted a limited edition watch incorporating that technology to raise awareness about mental health illness affecting adults and children.

This year has been a stellar for Philip Stein, from breakthrough sleep studies to celebrity endorsements and the development of new products that are designed to make people feel better. In April 2011 they released “Fruitz” a chronograph that was created with the collaboration of Jeff Sparr, artist and founder of Peace Love Studios (PLS). Mr. Sparr said, ‘Peace Love Studios is a growing community of mental health advocates and artists dedicated to breaking the silence and eliminating the stigma surrounding mental illness that affects millions of individuals and families.’

Fruitz 'Peace Love' Jeff Sparr

Philip Stein partnered with PLS and community artists to create the limited edition ‘Fruitz’ watches that feature uniquely designed oversize dials with seeds instead of numbers, curved second hand markers, colorful silicone straps and the proprietary natural frequency technology that has become synonymous with all Philip Stein chronographs. Although Jeff Sparr paints to regulate the affects of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) he wears a Philip Stein Chronograph to help him regulate his level of stress and increase his focus. He has battled the effects of OCD all his life and is driven to the continued effort of his foundation to help persons with mental illness. It is estimated that 26 percent of the U.S. population suffers from a diagnosable mental disorder. Matthew Kaplan co founder and CEO of the PLS foundation said, “We have helped over 6000 persons since we started and approximately 80 organizations are on a waiting list and are humbled by the response of our efforts.”
The Peace Love Foundation will be hosting the first annual fundraising event on May 17th 2011 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island and will be supported by community advocates that have enabled this organization to pursue its noble cause. For every Fruitz watch that is sold Philip Stein will donate 10 percent of the gross profits to the PLS foundation which provides the necessary access to healthcare that is essential for individuals suffering with mental illness. In addition, each Fruitz watch sold also provides five children the opportunity to participate in the Paint 4 Peace program that teaches art as a way of building confidence, motivation and delivering a message of hope and love.

Earlier this month, Swiss manufacturer Roger Dubuis introduced their entirely new La Monégasque line of watches within the historic Monte Carlo district of Monaco.
