Earlier this week, Sotheby’s held their auction of Important Watches & Clocks in New York, the event saw a record number in sales, totaling more than $ 8.8 million. Of the 384 lots that hit the block, 350 of them sold, 93% of which brought prices within or above pre-sale estimates. The biggest sellers of the day? A pair of very special Patek Philippe wristwatches that fetched $ 482,500… each.
One of the big selling Pateks was a Ref 96 HU (Heure Universelle), which is a yellow gold worldtime watch dating to 1937. It is in fact, one of the earliest known examples of a worldtime wristwatch, and being a Patek, it is exceedingly rare. We’re suckers for worldtime complications, and this watch is a great example of why. “An icon of function and form” as we’ve previously stated. The Ref 96 HU’s selling price set a world record for a Patek Philippe worldtime in a Calatrava case.
The other big seller, a Ref 5013P, is a platinum minute repeating perpetual calendar with retrograde date and moon phase. A bit of a mouthful to describe, as one of the most complex Pateks ever made should be. Its 515 parts come together in a platinum tonneau case built in 2004.
Other highlights from the auction include a cloisonné enamel dial Vacheron Constantin Ref 4720 that sold for $ 170,500, a pair of complementary silver-gilt enamel and pearl watches circa 1860 that brought $ 236,500 and a silver and marble floating turtle mystery timepiece made by Cartier circa 1930. That last piece may sound a little strange, but it’s definitely worth a second look. Read a little more about it and see a picture over at their site, right here. We’ll just say it involves a turtle floating inside a silver dish, marking the time as it goes about its way.

You may have heard of the Flying Officer, the Gallet’s most famous model: a two register chronograph with cities of the world listed by time zone around the dial and a rotating bezel to track times across said time zones or measure hours elapsed (by placing the 12 at the location of the tip of the hour hand). Harry Truman even wore one that was a gift from his staff. (See the pictures below.) But did you know the original Flying Officer is actually a really innovative timepiece, for more than one reason? We bet you didn’t. But, here, Eric Wind explains why Truman’s watch was so important, and so cool.
Click through for the full story on the original Flying Officer plus original advertisements, pictures of Truman’s own watch, and other interesting tidbits.

This November 29, Jaeger-LeCoultre, alongside auction house Artcurial, will host the largest sale of JLC pieces in history. This will be a veritable feast for vintage and important JLC collectors, and they have given us an early look at some of the piece available. Included are, in our very humble opinion, some of the coolest watches of the 20th century.
The sale will include an original American Deep Sea diving watch (you can see 2011′s tribute here), and original Polaris, an original Reverso from 1933 with blue enamel dial (a red enamel Reverso recently sold for around $ 35k), an unique Atmos clock, and a super cool watch called the Geophysic Chronometer, this one in gold.
The sale will take place at the Hôtel Marcel Dassault, Paris on Nov 29, 2011. Previews will run in Geneva at the Hotel de La Paix from Nov 12-14, 2011 and Paris at the Hotel Marcel Dassault from Nov 24-28, 2011 and are open to the public.

Question by bradwelljackson
Of course I could look this up myself, but what I want to know is if any US citizens already know, without looking it up, why the Liberty Bell is so important. What important event(s) is involved with the Liberty Bell?
Please, no cut-and-pastes. As I said, I want to know what the average US citizen already knows about the Liberty Bell, without looking it up.
Answer by staisil
On July 8, 1776, with the Liberty Bell ringing out from the tower of Independence Hall summoning the citizens of Philadelphia to hear the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence by Colonel John Nixon.
The Pennsylvania Assembly ordered the Bell in 1751 to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of William Penn’s 1701 Charter of Privileges, Pennsylvania’s original Constitution. It speaks of the rights and freedoms valued by people the world over. Particularly forward thinking were Penn’s ideas on religious freedom, his liberal stance on Native American rights, and his inclusion of citizens in enacting laws.
As the Bell was created to commemorate the golden anniversary of Penn’s Charter, the quotation “Proclaim Liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof,” from Leviticus 25:10, was particularly apt. For the line in the Bible immediately preceding “proclaim liberty” is, “And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year.” What better way to pay homage to Penn and hallow the 50th year than with a bell proclaiming liberty?

Answer by Mary
There not important in terms of programing but they are fun to participtate in. However, some rumors can get incorporated into storylines, for example when Matt Hardy first returned to the WWE to take on Edge who had stolen Matts real life girlfriend, Lita.

new rolex Question&Answer:
Question by Mom, can I have some money
A very successful lawyer parked his brand new Porsche Carrera GT in front of the office, ready to show it off to his colleagues. As he got out, a truck came along too close to the curb and completely tore off the driver’s door.
Fortunately, a cop in a police car was close enough to see the accident and pulled up behind the Porsche, his lights flashing. But, before the cop had a chance to ask any questions, the lawyer started screaming hysterically about how his Porsche, which he had just picked up the day before, was now completely ruined and would never be the same, no matter how hard the body shop tries to make it new again.
After the lawyer finally wound down from his rant, the cop shook his head in disgust and disbelief. “I can’t believe how materialistic you lawyers are,” he said. “You are so focused on your possessions that you neglect the most important things in life.”
“How can you say such a thing?” asked the lawyer. The cop replied, “Don’t you even realize that your left arm is missing? It got ripped off when the truck hit you!!!”
“OH, MY GOD!” screamed the lawyer. “MY ROLEX!”
Answer by Roberto S.

Question by Gulfstream_five_fifty
The Hit and Run Case
A very successful lawyer parked his brand-new Lexus in front of his office, ready to show it off to his colleagues. As he got out, a truck passed too close and completely tore the door off of the drivers side. The counselor immediately grabbed his cell phone, dialed 911, and within minutes a policeman pulled up.
Before the officer had a chance to ask any questions, the lawyer started screaming hysterically. His Lexus, which he had just picked up the day before, was now completely ruined and would never be the same, no matter what the body shop did to it.
When the lawyer finally wound down from his ranting and raving, the officer shook his head in disgust and disbelief.
“I cant believe how materialistic you lawyers are,” he said. “You are so focused on your possessions that you dont notice anything else.”
“How can you say such a thing?” asked the lawyer.
The cop replied, “Dont you know that your left arm is missing from the elbow down? It must have been torn off when the truck hit you.”
“Ahhh!” screamed the lawyer. “Wheres my Rolex!”

Question by brooklyn: How important is the black rubber plug on the bell housing of a 2003 ford explorer?
I have a 2003 ford explorer and I recently had the transmission rebuilt. When I collected the truck I noticed a small amount of oil/transmission fluild around the black rubber plug on the bell housing on the transmission and upon closer examination I found that the rubber plug was damaged(it had a hole in it). Should I be concerned? Should I take the truck back for them to replace this plug?
Best answer:
Answer by testpilot61
Simple answer is YES. The sooner the better. Have the transmission shop inspect the fluid your seeing. With a new rebuild you should not be seeing any leakage of fluids at all.
If the shop is responsible they will be more than happy to make any necessary repair at no additional cost.
What do you think? Answer below!
