Seiko Corporation of America, a subsidiary of one of the world’s best-known manufacturers of timepieces has launched a ‘Giving Hearts’ campaign this year in support of the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women® crusade.

Concerned that heart disease claims the lives of one in three women who suffer from it, The American Heart Association has committed to educate and raise awareness of a disease that many tend to associate primarily with older men. The website at GoRedForWomen.org provides a valuable resource for women seeking information, needing to connect or looking for solutions. “We are committed to fighting this #1 killer that is preventable,” says the site. “We encourage women and the men who love them to embrace the cause.”

To support and help publicize this noble endeavor, Seiko USA has designed a special watch this year and is contributing $ 15 of every one sold through March 1, 2012 (with a minimum $ 100,000 contribution.). The company has also launched a ‘Giving Hearts’ web page on their site where consumers are invited to design their own virtual hearts and dedicate them to loved ones via email or for display in the public forum. (You can pick from a variety of patterns, borders, decorations and dedications.) Visitors may vote on their favorite designs and enter to win a free watch.

Called the Go Red For Women Seiko Tressia, it’s a slender women’s dress watch with a black ion bangle-style bracelet with a jeweler’s clasp, Swarovski crystal accents and an AHA heart logo on the face. It’s selling for $ 177 online and is even water resistant up to 30 meters. “Tressia’s heart is in the right place,” says Seiko. Now you can be sure your special valentine knows that yours is too.

Save a woman’s life. Give her pretty jewelry.

I own a large and enviable collection of luxury watches. I never wear them as I feel like people who wear this kind of accessories are just trying to impress people in a materialistic way. My parents are not flashy at all, they are the most humble people I have ever known but when it comes to me they give me a lot of gifts I feel uncomfortable about. I have talked to them about this but they think that I’m exaggerating. I’m an artsy 20 year old who listens to jazz, classical, experimental electronica and Radiohead. I brought some of the cheapest with me to college but I still do feel uncomfortable about them.
-I’m not a hipster Stephanie. I’m more of a J Crew type of person. I like to keep it simple, and I also like the good kid kind of look even if I’m not as good as I look.

-They did not buy it for themselves. This is the weirdest part, cause I know that they would feel embarrassed of wearing something like this.

Timex is a brand that most all watches lovers know about, but we tend to not think about Timex watches that often. That might be a shame because Timex has an important history in the American watch industry, and is also a brand that today offers a lot of watches. Timex sort of shot themselves in the foot by making too many budget watches for people with bad vision or the elderly. Not that anything is wrong with that, but style and quality conscious people typecasted the brand as boring. Those watches do exist, but in the last few years Timex has been offering more fun timepieces that focus on fashion as well as their history.

Most Timex watches are $ 200 and under, with the majority of watches in this article being priced at under $ 100. Many of these are part of the Timex Originals collection or other lines that offer contemporary timepieces with a very of a retro flair. Even the ubiquitous Timex Easy Reader is getting more treatment as Timex has celebrated the king of dorky watches by offering them in new colors and materials. I never thought I’d enjoy wearing a sub-$ 100 watch with a name called “Easy Reader” as much. My favorite is at the top of this post with the black case and tan leather strap.

Timex makes a lot of watches, and because of their volume they can offer a pretty decent watch for even $ 75. You can get a lot of bang for your buck, but these are not what you would consider high-end pieces. The watches have quartz movements and mineral crystals, with steel and plastic cases. Overall they make for excellent fashion accessories, gifts, or watches for people who “keep breaking their watches.”

I was pretty impressed with Timex’s focus on handsome styling and colors. They did a good job at reinventing classic watches in terms of feel and proportions. While you can get a camper style Timex in purple plastic – aside from some interesting colors – there isn’t really anything dorky about these watches. This is me making an appeal to fellow watch snobs that a Timex can be on your radar when looking to make a sensible budget buy.

Part of many Timex watches is their special Indiglo night-light feature. These helpful backlights are usually operated by pressing in the crown which lights up the dial. Watches with Indiglo are great and I would love to see more high-end pieces offer stuff like that. It is a feature that is easy to miss on watches that don’t have it. You can get a lot of these watches on Timex’s website or at a range of stores. Certainly something to look at during the holiday gift buying season.

The website Groomstars.com is founded on an interesting idea – that being the concept that men are hard to shop for (especially when it comes to gifts for special occasions). As the name of the site implies, the focus of the site is offering gifts for the men who participate in weddings (not like routinely or anything). Along with the fact that guys are not super easy to shop for, most gift websites usually have items that either appeal only to women, or are gifts guys don’t normally want. Groomstars strives to offering an enticing selection of male-minded gifts, and like many other gift based websites, Groomstars also features most (if not all) of their products as being personalized.

Featured products including a range of decent quality pens, holders, valets, watch cases, clothing accessories, hobbyist goods, nice tools, and other things men usually like, but wouldn’t normally buy for themselves. I actually appreciate the selection a lot. It is as though someone waded through most of the obvious (and many non obvious) gifts a man would like and presented them in an easy to navigate place.

Longines, now the official timekeeper of the Kentucky Derby and its home track Churchill Downs, recently was able to award the winners of the 2011 Kentucky Derby with a Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph watch. Longines recorded a winning time of 2.04 minutes as the running time for “Animal Kingdom” the winning horse. The Swiss brand rewarded the horse owner Barry Irwin, jockey Johnny Velazquez, and trainer Graham Motion each with the classically inspired timepiece. Participation with the well-known high-society event is important to the historic brand that is fighting for a larger share of the US high-end watch market. It is also part of an overall trend of watch brands taking more of a key role in popular US cultural events.
