The Sowind Group has named a new president of its American operations. Sowind, which owns Swiss luxury watch brands Girard-Perregaux and JeanRichard, is planning a US expansion strategy for the Girard-Perregaux brand and the new president will be working closely with Sowind CEO, Michele Sofisti, and Girard-Perregaux managing director, Stefano Macaluso, to oversee this process.

“I am very excited and honored to join an iconic brand like Girard-Perregaux,” said Michael Margolis, the man who has been chosen to do the job. “I have admired the brand and its heritage from afar for many years.”

Girard-Perregaux does have an impressive and illustrious heritage. Although the Girard-Perregaux name was not established until the year 1856, the brand is generally considered to have been founded in 1791, by an orphan named Jean-François Bautte, when he signed his first watches at the age of 19. Bautte, an industrious youth, learned the various trades associated with watchmaking and became popular for the extra-thin models that he made. When he set up a manufacturing company in Geneva, Bautte decided to keep all of the various watchmaking trades under the one roof, and idea that was quite innovative at the time. In his lifetime, Bautte went on the trade with all the European courts and was even visited by the future Queen Victoria. Since that time, the company that would eventually become Girard-Perregaux has been renowned for innovation, style and prestige.

Some historical highlights:

• 1867 – Girard-Perregaux won a prize at the Paris Universal Exhibition for a new tourbillon design. (The tourbillon was developed around 1795 by Abraham-Louis Breguet as a way to counteract the negative effects that gravity has on the more sensitive pieces of the watch escapement. By placing the escapement in a rotating cage, the pallet fork, balance wheel and hairspring were more insulated against shocks, gravity, magnetism and imbalance within the watch itself. Many variations on the tourbillon have been developed since.)

• 1880 – Constant Girard-Perregaux developed a wristwatch concept for German naval officers. Although Kaiser Wilhelm I ordered the watches and 2,000 were made, wristwatches did not gain in cultural popularity until the following century.

• 1889 – Constant Girard-Perregaux’s masterpiece, the famed Three Gold Bridges Tourbillon won a gold medal at the Exposition Paris Universal Exhibition; this piece so dominated the industry that it was disallowed from further competition in 1900.

• 1930 – Predicted by Girard-Perregaux some fifty years earlier, the wristwatch exceeded the pocket watch in popularity.

• 1945 – The rectangular, art deco inspired model was created. Fifty years later, it was revived and called the Vintage 1945.

• 1966 – Girard-Perregaux’s in-house R&D team developed the first high-frequency movement, at 36,000 vibrations per hour. These chronometers performed so well that, in 1967, a full 70 percent of certificates issued by the Neuchatel Observatory were awarded to Girard-Perregaux High Frequency Chronometers.

• 1970 – One of the first Swiss watch companies to get on board with the production of quartz wristwatches, Girard-Perregaux set the universal standard frequency at 32,768 Hz.

• 1981 – Girard-Perregaux was also one of the first to return to traditional mechanical timepieces after quartz had turned the Swiss watchmaking industry upside-down. Girard-Perregaux released a pocket watch containing the three gold bridges Tourbillon.

• 1992-1993 – Italian entrepreneur, architect and former racecar driver, Luigi Macaluso took over Girard-Perregaux and signed a “co-branding” agreement with Ferrari.

• 1997 – Villa Marguerite, the building that would house the new Girard-Perregaux museum was purchased.

• 2004 – The first Girard-Perregaux boutique opened in Gstaad.

Margolis, the man who will now bring Girard-Perregaux into the US in the 21st century, was born in the States. He graduated from the University of Connecticut with a double major in Latin American Studies and Foreign Languages; he is fluent in English, Spanish, Portuguese and German. Margolis has held positions at Crest Reprographics and at Nikon. It was while working for TimeZone.com, however, that he developed a passion for luxury watches. He moderated that site for almost 11 years before taking a job with Hublot as US sales director. Now he will be overseeing Girard-Perregaux’s advance into that same marketplace.

“Mike is a remarkable individual, with true passion for the craft,” said Sofisti. “We are glad to have him on board to lead the US team into this new phase of the brand.”

Margolis will assume office on Thursday, March 1.

I couldn’t help but write about this. You might already know about these, which means you think they are as cool as I do. Nike has decided to build a limited edition set of the Nike MAG shoes from Back to the Future Part II as part of their “It’s About Time” collection. These shoes have until now only existed as movie props. People have been begging Nike to actually make them for years – and here they are. There will be 1,500 pairs made – every single one will be auctioned off on eBay from now until September 18th, 2011.

class="alignnone size-full wp-image-32574" title="Nike Mag shoes 5" src="http://cdn.ablogtoread.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Nike-Mag-shoes-5.png" alt="Nike Mag shoes 5 Nike MAG Shoes From Back To The Future Actually For Sale" width="600" height="490" />

Every kid who has ever seen the Back to the Future movies has wanted at least part of what they saw in the films to be real. 26 years later and we don’t really have much. No time machines, no hover boards, no flying cars. Not even flux capacitors. And we certainly don’t have self lacing, self drying shoes that make cool wooshing noises. Though we have had shoes with lights in them for a while… And look at the state of our civilization now. The 2011 Nike MAG doesn’t fully live up to its 1989 promise, but is here and is a reality as a perfect replica. All the tech toys we wanted it to have aren’t here, but it does light up and has a battery charger that comes with it.

class="alignnone size-full wp-image-32569" title="Marty1" src="http://cdn.ablogtoread.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Marty1.jpg" alt="Marty1 Nike MAG Shoes From Back To The Future Actually For Sale" width="600" height="752" />

class="alignnone size-full wp-image-32576" title="shoe5" src="http://cdn.ablogtoread.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/shoe5.jpg" alt="shoe5 Nike MAG Shoes From Back To The Future Actually For Sale" width="600" height="300" />

While this is not a watch, and it does not tell the time, it is tangentially related to time travel. Good enough right? It is however a very cool collectible that many people will eagerly try to buy. Why did Nike make them? Well last year they released the Dunk 6.0 DeLorean shoes as a limited edition of 1000 pairs that were a silent nod to the 25th anniversary of the original Back to the Future. I think the easy success and publicity those shoes had helped fuel the decision to make these MAGs.

class="alignnone size-full wp-image-32575" title="Nike Mag shoes lights" src="http://cdn.ablogtoread.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Nike-Mag-shoes-lights.jpg" alt="Nike Mag shoes lights Nike MAG Shoes From Back To The Future Actually For Sale" width="600" height="471" />

class="alignnone size-full wp-image-32570" title="Nike Mag shoes 1" src="http://cdn.ablogtoread.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Nike-Mag-shoes-1.jpg" alt="Nike Mag shoes 1 Nike MAG Shoes From Back To The Future Actually For Sale" width="600" height="396" />

According to Nike the full proceeds from auction sales for all 1,500 pairs will go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation that is dedicated to finding a cure and treatments for Parkinson’s disease. This means that the entire project is essentially for charity. Nike claims the shoes are a direct aesthetic replica of the movie prop shoes from the film. In Back to the Future Part II Marty McFly actually travels to 2015 – so perhaps in a few years we will get the real deal. I do not believe that the Nike MAG 2011 shoes will be commercially available outside of the eBay auctions.

class="alignnone size-full wp-image-32572" title="Nike Mag shoes 3" src="http://cdn.ablogtoread.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Nike-Mag-shoes-3.jpg" alt="Nike Mag shoes 3 Nike MAG Shoes From Back To The Future Actually For Sale" width="584" height="606" />

class="alignnone size-full wp-image-32571" title="Nike Mag shoes 2" src="http://cdn.ablogtoread.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Nike-Mag-shoes-2.png" alt="Nike Mag shoes 2 Nike MAG Shoes From Back To The Future Actually For Sale" width="597" height="521" />

The auctions started last night and I believe go for 24 hours each. All 1,500 pairs are available in eBay’s Fashion Vault. Sizes for the shoes are 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13. As cultural icons these shoes are great. If I had a pair it would be really hard to wear them. I have a feeling that most of them are going to go for very handsome prices. Question by Locked Bunny

Just wondering. Everybody knows that Ted DiBiase will be the WWE Champion and the new Face of the WWE soon, but nearly everybody hates him, and those who like DiBiase love him as crazy! That’s like John Cena! The morrons of the IWC hate those 2 guys, but the REAL WWE Universe loves those guys. Both are not bad wrestlers at all! Ted DiBiase is quite possibly the best wrestler of all time! John Cena is a decent wrestler, and not as bad as people claim him out to be.

So, is it true?

IWC Question&Answer:

Question by Elite One ™

I know…OMG it’s Elite One, he is back, well NO I am not fully back. Believe me I will make a full return but I think you guys like the question of the month from me so I will try to be on Y!A as much as I can. NO I did not die. NO I did not get hacked. I have just been very busy like I said 3 months ago. For the new users who don’t know me, add me as a contact and look at my answers, questions, etc.

ANYWAYS…. What do you think about Randy Orton. He is the most talked about superstar on the IWC, he is a heel who gets cheered like a superhero making him a tweener not a face, he has the attitude, the gimmick (which some old school fans despise), and he has the charisma and just there presence. Do you think he is going to make a bigger legacy than his father? Do you think he is going to be the next Rock or Stone Cold? What is your opinion on him and what do you expect from him in the future.

Please Star

The Future of the WWE?

Question by Jarek C

1979 Hulk Hogan made his official WWF Debut. He left and returned to re-debut later in 1983, when Hogan’s popularity exploded and he became a virtual icon to the people and Hulkamania put the WWF on the map.

1985 Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat made his WWF debut and would go on to become one of the great legends of Pro Wrestling

1988 “The Heartbreak Kid” Shawn Michaels made his debut as one half of the “Rockers” and would go on to surpass other Legends to become an Icon of Wrestling.

1990 Survivor Series marked the debut of the Undertaker who like Shawn Michaels would go on to become a Legend and Icon in the WWF-E

1996 The WWF was graced with Rocky Maivia, who would go on to become a Legend in the business under the new ring name The Rock.

1995 Star performer Steve Austin made his arrival into the WWF, and would later adopt the name “Stone Cold” years later some would consider him the greatest WWF-E performer of all time.

All the Superstars above paved the way for the business in some way shape or form. Be it through their wrestling prowess, their ability to entertain and captivate the crowd, or usher in the highly praised “Attitude Era” Each of these men began as small time wrestlers, many of whom were booed and disliked at some point in their careers. However, once given the chance and the right push and marketing, they became the Superstars, Legends and Icons that we have in the business today. For 10+ years these men have done all they could to entertain the fans, some to a slightly lesser extent then the others, but nevertheless the sacrifices they made are still appreciated, long after their careers have been over. Those that still compete are nearing the end of their careers whether we care to admit it or not, the stars we grew up with will not be with us much longer.

So where does this leave us currently, and in the future? Right now we are ‘graced’ with the performances of John Cena, Batista, Edge in addition to Christian and both Hardy’s, along with Triple H. These stars are currently ‘ruling’ the roost in the WWE. They receive the big pushes, the World Titles and the Main Event status. The latter 5 have been with the WWE for the past 10 years. Each of whom aside from Triple H is around the age of 35, so if used properly they could be around for at least the next 5-10 years.

But it’s become painfully obvious that several of these Superstars (aside from Christian) are not quite cutting it with the fans. They demand new blood, new people, new contenders in the spotlight…or do they?

I’ve found in the last few months that the IWC and many fans seem to shut away the new Superstars that come into the ring. Is it because they are awful in the ring? Not at all. Do the gimmicks not fit? They fit fine. Are these fans trying to compare the new Superstars to the Legends they grew up with? It seems like it.

Jack Swagger, DJ Gabriel, CM Punk, Ricky Ortiz, R-Truth, MVP, Shelton Benjamin, Evan Bourne, Tyson Kidd, Kofi Kingston, Hurricane Helms, JTG, Shad.

Most of whom with the exception of Punk & Swagger receive small pushes and are kept in the lower to mid-cards while the aforementioned group of Superstars constantly fight in the Main Event. So what does this lead to? Recycled Main Event Storylines, almost no mid-card stories, and essentially the group of newer Superstars are thrown in random matches that at the end of the day really don’t mean anything.

So when the Pillars of the WWE (Triple H, Shawn, The Undertaker, Edge, Christian, Both Hardy’s) all become injured or retire, who will be left to take the reigns? A large group of lower to mid-card wrestlers. Now one could argue that they are all too young to be receiving a big push, but that is not true as most of them have been wrestling for quite some time now.

If the business does not push the Superstars now while the Legends are around to promote them, then the Superstars will probably never be as big as they could be until it’s too late. If you were to wait until the Pillars who hold the business up leave, then there won’t be anyone left to gradually take their spot.

So where will the WWE be in the next 5-10 years? MVP was the subject of a 5 month losing streak. Shelton Benjamin has competed in countless MITB matches and has yet to be rewarded with anything other then a boring US Title reign. Kofi Kingston doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. CM Punk was made to look like a paper champion last year and has had his character numbed down immensely. Helms made a return to a fairly big pop and had all the momentum going with him in his feud to take the US Title from Benjamin, and then he got Orton’d. The same can be said about R-Truth. Cryme Tyme remain the most over Tag Team in the company and have yet to be capitalized upon. There are numerous examples for Jack Swagger, Tyson Kidd & DJ Gabriel, and right now the future of Evan Bourne seems shaky at best.

So where will these Superstars be in the
he future? Still stuck in mindless minuscule plot lines in the Mid-Card section where the fans give half hearted pops for? Or will they finally be pushed accordingly and become the Superstars, Legends and Icons of tomorrow?

John Cena, Rey Mysterio, Evan Bourne are some of the guys that are going to be great in the future years.
John Cena is going to be great because he’s got strength and is one every championship except the Intercontinental title.
Evan Bourne is a great superstar who is rising up fast in the popularity meter and he can become champion one day.
Rey Mysterio is one of the best athletes out there that has won the World Heavyweight Championship in a Triple Threat Match.

All of these guys are exaples of what will happen to some of the superstars you mentioned.

Question by The Clown Prince of Crime

1. Will it finally capitalize The Rock vs Stone Cold in every sense of the feud like how most IWC regard Cena/Orton as Rock/Austin? Or will it fail to epitomize The Rock vs Stone Cole just like John Cena vs Batista last year at Wrestlemania 26 failed to emulate Hulk Hogan vs Ultimate Warrior?

2. Will it top Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels (either Wrestlemania 25 or 26, u’r choice) as the greatest match of PG Era? Or will their career as the two icons of PG Era fall flat in comparison to two injury ridden veterans cause their match can’t define the PG Era like Taker/HBK could?

Answer both to win BA.

1. Not a chance. Cena and Orton combined don’t have a fraction a Austin’s charisma.
2. Nothing in the PG era will top HBK/Taker.

IWC = Happy. Me = Not happy. He’s been champ before. Nothing new

IWC = Happy. Me = Happy. I prefer him heel though and would like to see him as a heel World champ

IWC = Happy. Me = Happy

IWC = Mixed. Some happy, some not happy. Me = I wouldn’t care either way

IWC = Upset. Me = Not happy or sad. Cena is a top guy that has the credibility to go over Taker, but I think he should just retire undefeated like I’ve said over and over again therefore noone can complain

IWC Question&Answer:

Question by Unholy Alliance

Almost every single IWC guys said Ted Debiase and John Morrison will be better than each other’s partner Cody and Miz, but take a look at them now. While Cody Rhodes is cutting decent promos and is improving with his new gimmick, Ted Debiase is living under his dad’s shadow and it’s extremely boring to watch him. While Miz is holding US title and MITB case at the same time, Jomo is going nowhere. Will IWC’s prediction will be proven right in future or is it gonna be like this forever?

BQ: who else finds R Truth extremely annoying

I don’t know why anyone would consider him that. He has one of the most boring personalities in the WWE. I don’t care how good he is in the ring. Without mic skills and charisma, he won’t be the standard-bearer of the WWE. Well, that is unless Raw goes from TV-PG to TV-G.
