There is a lot to love about Basel World – the obvious, like 1300 exhibiting timepiece manufactures all within a square mile – and there is a lot one can do without – the long days, endless meetings, bathrooms oddly placed in smoke-filled stairwells and seeming total unavailability of lunch food beyond bratwurst.  But, without a doubt the best thing about Basel World is getting to see friends you don’t often see, sitting down over a beer and just having fun.  You see, the watch world is, at the end of the day, a rather small one, and the majority of us are dear friends.  Sure, we may write for this blog and they might write for that blog, and person X might slave away tirelessly and brilliantly with little aclaim, while person Y might be a media darling, but at the end of the day, we are all friends and while Basel is business for all of us, we make sure to take a night off from the glad handing to do what we want to do – and this post shows you exactly what we want to do.

Since I’ve been coming to Basel World, i’ve joined some good friends, like Frank from Monochrome, Gerard from In2Watches, and Robert-Jan from FratelloWatches for a saturday night of schnitzel and beer.  Last year, the group grew to include several other friends, like Ernie from Watchuseek, the Grönefeld Brothers, and Stepan Sarpaneva.  This year, the group grew to include several more friends – so many friends in fact that we took over the entire restaurant.  And, since we were all together already, it seemed like the perfect place for the folks from Timezone to present the “Watch of the Year” award to the Gronefelds.

Click through for a detailed photo report on our favorite night of the year at Basel World – schnitzel saturday shared with many of our friends, and many of the greatest watchmakers in the world.  See who you can spot after the jump, and we hope you enjoy this look at the very human side of the watch industry.

Jacob and Theo were mostly busy hanging out with cosplayers.
What an interesting cosplay this is eh? I love the hair, but could do without the poofy parts in the back.

used rolex Question&Answer:

Question by Robert Bethell

I get called spoiled and rich a lot by my friends and kids at my school. I am really interested in computers and technology, so all of the money I make goes to that stuff – which I personally buy – I have a Macbook Pro, Xbox 360, 2 other laptops, an Ipod Touch, Droid X, Ipad, 3 Bose stereo systems, a 46 inch television in my room, and other electronics. Now that is stuff that I buy with my own money – its like other people who buy weed, sports cards, clothes – technology is my hobby and I spend money on it.

But I get called spoiled because of what my parents have given me. The car I currently drive is a Chrysler 300, Bentley Grill. Its not the greatest car, but a lot of my friends think a 16 year old shouldn’t be driving it. I have tons of watches, from Rolex, to Guess, to Seiko, and all my clothes are from brands like Burberry, Lacoste, Armani etc.

However, these weren’t always mine. All the stuff listed above was my dads – he passed away 2 years ago, and obviously I was the one who was able to use his material possessions being his son. If he didn’t pass away, I wouldn’t have any of the stuff listed above. When people call me lucky or rich or spoiled, I just say I am not. Im not lucky that I have that stuff – I would trade all that stuff and every thing I own for my dad back. But I dont feel like getting into the whole sob story.

How should I respond to my fellow peers.

Answer by Chris Forman
Hello,
I am currently in a situation like you, being an average 13 year old boy.
People use to do that to me but i found a way to resolve the incident.

I just told my friends that i paid for this stuff with the money i earn’t doing … Unlike them I didn’t spend my money on sweets and magazines I spent my money on things which I actually wanted and have finally got with the money i earn’t doing … .

Hope this helps.
Chris

Technology is also my hobby and i plan to make a buisness out of it in the future. I am only 13 year old but i have programmed applications, also i have built several computers and also i have fixed alot which means i have had the money to be able to go out and buy the amazing items. Below are just a few.

Wii, iPod Touch, Bose Comfort 3 headphones, 19″ Samsung TV, Loads of designer hoodies, Hackintosh (PC Version of MAC), Apple Magic Mouse, Apple Wireless Keyboard, 2 x Belkin N1 Routers, Airport express, 3 copys of Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate).

So yes.

Just tell your friends you have earn’t the items you listed with your bear hands

Question by Jay: What should I do about my dads friends?
I was at a family function the other day and a few of my dads friends from his child hood were there.

I get along with them all even though they are in there 40′s and I am 24. Anyway, they don’t really like my dad all that much anymore. They won’t say it to his face but everyones knows the reasons.

They are: He is really wealthy but really cheap. He wears a fake rolex. He is a member at a country club but doesn’t use it b/c they charge a small booking fee to play golf- so it’s just a status thing for him. He is so cheap he eats ham sandwhiches on white bread everyday. He doesn’t help out any of his kids me included. Also, he makes 100+k a year but the only nice things he has are stuff my step mom bought him. (She spends way more on him, then he does on her) He is generally mean and puts people down.

Well anyway, me and his old buddies have alot in common. We all play golf, smoke cigars, tell dirty jokes ect. We all like to have a good time and live life day by day. Should I continue to hang around these guys? My dad doesn’t know I am buddies like that with his friends. I feel bad b/c they were his friends first.
RE/ Joey F: I see your point. But as for the fake rolex. He wears it b/c he doesn’t think any one can tell the diff. I say don’t wear a fake if you don’t approve of the real thing

RE/ eno: Smoking cigars and telling dirty jokes is a solid foundation for good friendships if you want to hang out with other cigar conesours. Dirty jokes- what can I say. If you have the same sense of humar as someone else ya tend to like em. Good thing I didn’t tell you about our shared love of Scotch Wiskeys as well.

To the both of you, no one makes fun of him or says anything malicious. No one has said anything they wouldn’t have said to his face. It’s just these things that I mentioned kind of make it a drag to hang around him. It’s not mean, it may be a personal preference of activities, but it is the truth.
