The “First Omega in Space” Speedmaster, missing its “controversial” leaf seconds hand.Let’s get one thing straight – the new “First Omega In Space” Speedmaster that you see above is awesome.  It was released this March at Basel World and it really looks the part of vintage Speedmasters.  Based on the Reference 2998 worn by Astronaut Wally Schirra into space aboard the Mercury Atlas 8 mission in October of 1962, this watch seeks to, and I believe succeeds in, capturing the hearts of all those watch fans out there that think of the vintage Speedmasters as the quintessential watch (seriously, ask anybody, even those guys with the Voutilainens and Pateks what the greatest watch ever made was, and there is a good chance they’ll say the 1960′s Speedmaster). 

But, this watch has raised a few eyebrows with the die-hard vintage fans.  Click through for Ben Clymer’s critical analysis of what Omega got right, and what Omega almost got right with this new watch.

Last fall, we were the first to introduce you to the decidedly automotive-inspired watches of Autodromo. The young brand’s Vallelunga, Brescia and Veloce models are exercises in well-thought through design and great builds, especially for the refreshingly affordable prices which are well south of a grand. The watches have been a hit with everyone from motorheads to diehard watch geeks who usually sniff at anything with a battery (yes, they’re all quartz, get over it).

While we loved the time-only pieces, a line of automotive watches cries out for a chronograph and Autodromo has been dropping hints for a while now. Today we bring you the first look at Autodromo’s new Vallelunga Chronograph.

Mitchell developed a racing seaplane, the Supermarine S6B, which won the Schneider Trophy on 13th September, 1931. During the contest the aircraft reached 340 mph (547 km/h). In 1934 the Air Ministry announced that it was looking for a new fighter plane. Mitchell, whose company was now part of Vickers Aviation, decided to adapt his Supermarine seaplane, in an attempt to meet the requirements of the Royal Air Force. The new all-metal single-seat fighter plane, the Supermarine Spitfire Mk. I, had several technical features of the earlier racing seaplane. It had the same structure and aerodynamic lines. However, it had a new engine, the 1030 hp Rolls Royce Merlin and carried 8 machine-guns. The first Spitfire prototype appeared on 5th March, 1936 and flew at 350 mph (563 km/h) and could ascend at approximately 2500 ft (762 m) per minute. With its slender aerodynamic lines and elliptical-plan wings, it was claimed at the time, to be the smallest and cleanest aircraft that could be constructed around a man and an engine. The Royal

In the late 1930s, TWA was garnering attention and passengers with its new fleet of Boeing Stratoliners. The planes could travel coast to coast in only 14 hours – quick enough for most passengers, but not for TWA majority stockholder Howard Hughes. Hughes wanted an even more powerful plane – one which could fly faster and further. He turned to Lockheed Aircraft to build the new plane, the Constellation. Hughes’ one stipulation was that the project remain top secret throughout its development. To achieve the unprecedented power required by Hughes, Lockheed designers sought a more dynamic engine. The engine they chose, the 18-cylinder Wright R-3350, was outfitted with propellers over fifteen feet in diameter. To integrate these powerhouse engines into the plane’s overall design, a very unique airframe took shape. Adequate ground clearance for the long propellers necessitated extraordinarily tall landing gear struts. To mitigate the front-gear length, the fuselage sloped slightly downward at the nose. For better control, a large tail surface was required, but the height of a single, large tail would not fit most airport hangars of the day. A triple-fin design solved the problem. Development remained secret until World War II, when commercial planes were requisitioned for wartime service. The aviation industry was shocked to see how technologically advanced the
