Movado has landed the honor of designing, producing and marketing a new watch line for Ferrari S.p.A., the iconic sports car manufacturer and race team. The agreement is a multi-year, worldwide license that will give Ferrari and Scuderia Ferrari brand a new partner and new outlets for distribution.

Ferrari chose to end their relationship with their previous partner, Panerai, in the hopes that the Movado Group will reach a wider audience with their more affordable luxury watches. Ferrari intends for the Scuderia Ferrari watch line to be more accessible by the general public which Movado should be able to help accommodate. Movado will use their wholesale distribution outlets to market the watches globally, as well as Ferrari stores and the Ferrari online store. The watches will also peak at $ 2,000 which is a dramatic decrease from the prior watch line.

Chief Executive and Chairman, Efraim Grinberg, of Movado Group, Inc. announced that the “Ferrari Formula 1 cars and Ferrari Road cars will provide great inspiration” to their design group. The watch collection is expected to include captivating, recognizable designs combined with the high quality expertise and skill that is part of Movado’s reputation. Grinberg stated that Movado “looks forward to collaborating with them to design an innovation collection and to satisfy the requests of Ferrari enthusiasts” all around the globe.

Movado has a history of partnering with well-known brands to create elegant and stylish watches. Founded in 1881, the Swiss company has formed a solid reputation as one of the world’s leading watchmakers and has earned 200 international awards for their watch design and time technology. Brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Coach, ESQ, Lacoste, Ebel and Hugo Boss have learned that a partnership with Movado Group is a sure and successful method of broadening their accessory line.

What should fans expect? The new watch line will, no doubt, be of expert craftsmanship and innovative technology with an elegant design and distinction. With the inspiration of cars that reek of speed, grace and beauty, the partnership of Movado and Ferrari is sure to produce outstanding timepieces that will have fans eagerly waiting the unveiling next year.

When should we expect to see the new Movado-Scuderia Ferrari watch line? It was announced that the collection will be ready for launch at the 2013 Annual Watch & Jewelry Fair which is held in Basel, Switzerland in March of every year. The wait is sure to keep watch aficionados counting the days.

Hublot has partnered with Ferrari and designed the Big Bang Ferrari, a new watch in their Big Bang Collection. In an amazing collaboration of design, technology and mechanics, the Big Bang Ferrari watch will leave you captivated.

Sporting a large 45.5 millimeter case, a cylindrical bezel and a sapphire dial that shows the inner workings, the Big Bang Ferrari impresses with style and a sense of the dramatic. Hublot has incorporated features that were inspired by Ferrari, such as wrist straps with tone on tone stitching used on Ferrari upholstery and a minute counter with hands and markers reminiscent of the Ferrari dashboard. The dial’s minute counter is positioned at 3 o’clock beside a round yellow date window. With Ferrari in mind, the Prancing Horse is featured in relief at the 9 o’clock position. In fact, all the innovations featured on the watch emphasize the relationship to the Ferrari automobile world. The idea being that the watch is more streamlined and mechanical creating a new signature for the brand.

The Big Bang Ferrari comes in a new material by Hublot termed Magic Gold. It is a scratch-resistant 18-carat gold that Hublot developed in its foundry during the beginning of 2012. The watch is also available in satin-finished Titanium. The case is adorned with six of Hublot’s countersunk signature H-shaped screws.

A new quick-change system was developed for the watch straps allowing for two interchangeable straps. This concept originated in relation to the safety seatbelt mechanism of the Ferrari. The strap comes in Black Rubber or Black Gummy Alligator with Black Rubber décor.

The Hublot-Ferrari partnership came about in November 2011. In fact, the agreement between the two states that Hublot is the exclusive watchmaking partner in the full range of Ferrari’s brand image and commercial activities. Quite the achievement. Hublot was at hand in Japan in March 2012 at the Ferrari Racing Days Suzuka to unveil the watch for the first time. It was put up for auction to support the Ishinomaki City earthquake.

Considering Hublot is a brand that was born in 1980, they have achieved a stellar reputation rather quickly. Their dedication to quality and exquisite craftsmanship took them to the rank of leading watchmaking brands. The “Art of Fusion” concept where unique materials were created and used for their brand and the blending of Swiss Watchmaking Tradition and 21st century Watchmaking Art has led Hublot to renowned worldwide prestige. The Big Bang Ferrari watch is just another step forward on their remarkable journey.

Cabestan Ferrari watch 133 Cabestan Scuderia Ferrari One Watch Hands On

Mamma mia! I finally got some hands-on time with the ultra, ultra elusive and exclusive Scuderia Ferrari One watch built by Cabestan only for VIP Ferrari customers. I originally wrote about this Cabestan Ferrari watch back here in 2010 when previewing it. Now I got some hands-on time with one of the rare pieces and can easily say that it does feel like a real Ferrari on the wrist.

In America boys are raised with cars as being the ultimate luxury toy that they desire from well before they can drive. It isn’t uncommon for kids to have posters of super cars in their room and eagerly anticipate the day they may be able to afford even a budget model. That day doesn’t come for many people but that doesn’t stop them form lusting over these powerful and impractical machines. To a large degree that is what makes the high-end car industry so powerful – the fact that people are bred from a small age to want one. In at least the United States the same isn’t true with watches at this time. Perhaps that will change in the future. I can hope and with the amount of marketing dollars being pumped into the media it might happen a bit sooner than later.

Maybe a good way of moving in that direction is the marriage of cars and watches in successful packages such as this. Ferrari has had an interesting history with watch brands. I think that this small partnership with Cabestan was one of the most successful in terms of creating an amazing product. Right now the only watch brand that will be making Ferrari-branded watches is Hublot. We will see what cool products will come as a result very soon.

For those people lucky enough to ever own one of these Scuderia Ferrari One watches life is good. Cabestan is a limited production Swiss brand with a truly fascinating recent history. Their master watch maker is one of the most talented guys around and this piece was designed by the idea-king Mr. Ruchonnet who is responsible for many of today’s other most interesting watch concepts.

The Scuderia Ferrari One was a design evolution on the original Winch Vertical Tourbillon. The movement is mostly the same, but the case and concept are quite different. The case on the watch is beautifully designed and crafted. It feels so good on the wrist and hearkens the look of Ferrari engine parts and tools. It is possible that I am wrong but I think the case here is titanium. The little details that promote this theme are intense and highly engineered. I am not enough of a Ferrari expert to appreciate them all. The base watch itself has some wild features to it that just adds to how much this is a gear-head’s watches.

Bulging corners on the watch part of the winch connection system. Only the top two ones are for operating the watch though. This is where the winch system comes in. Cabestan provides a tiny mechanical winch that you attach to the case. Attaching it to the left side allows you to wind the movement (which has a three day power reserve), and right side is for changing the time. It works beautifully in an oddly over-engineered manner. The winch itself is made up of about 40 parts. It is a testament to horology that something that like even exists as it sits on the tip of your finger and even has a sapphire exhibition window to see the parts. The internal mechanism mostly acts as winding limiter to prevent you from over-winding and damaging the movement.

As the winch detaches there is risk of losing it. It actually stores in a special compartment in the watch deployment clasp. Good thinking Cabestan. Lose the winch and the price is about 4,500 Swiss Francs for a new one. The winch system was fun but proved to be a bit impractical. Moving forward on watches such as the Cabestan Trapezium, the brand has engineered the need for the winch out of the watch concept. It will remain a special thing of legends in the watch world and a sign of things that can come out of this industry.

The Ferrari watch of course retains the winch concept, but the piece also comes with a stylus you can use for winding it and adjusting the time. It is a very unique system and you’ll be amazed at the details if you ever get to play with one. The movement itself is a watch nerds dream. Most people will have no ability to appreciate it or understand what they are looking at. The movement combines a vertical tourbillon and fusee and chain transmission system. It is incredibly accurate for a mechanical watch and tells the time on moving drums. Overall indicators for the watch are the time with seconds, and a power reserve indicator.

The original Winch Vertical Tourbillon has two windows to see the dial with a middle section separating them. The Scuderia Ferrari One still has the middle section, but just one sapphire crystal over the entire face of the watch. This is where the Ferrari logo sits – on a carbon fiber middle rod. Very much in line with the Ferrari look. The movement itself is something anyone can enjoy. It is very cool to operate and watch in action. Cabestan has done an extremely good job with it. The concept has quirks of course, but you genuinely feel that it is something worth what they charge.

Ferrari is notoriously picky in the items they allow to have their name on it. Cabestan originally didn’t expect for the project to go through – but the design and base watch impressed the Ferrari people enough to green light the project. As you can see on the rear of the watch, it is limited to 60 pieces. That isn’t very many watches and Cabestan reportedly doesn’t even know who most of the owners are as most were sold through Ferrari to customers directly. I am pretty sure you needed to have a Ferrari car to even be considered to buy one of these. Price wise it is actually like having a Ferrari on your wrist.

Is this the ultimate accessory for Ferrari owners? Probably. 100 years from now I wonder what people will think of it. Will they remember what Cabestan was all about. Will the watch make sense? Will they realize that it is a Ferrari approved design? Seeing things like this bring together so many worlds I love that it is hard not to get giddy. The Cabestan Scuderia Ferrari One is an interesting horological rarity borne out of passion and the mutual respect that two brands had for one another. The owners of these watches are more than lucky. Price was well north of $ 300,000.

A date that will certainly become an anniversary in the years to come is November 5th 2011, which is when Jean-Claude Biver the CEO of Hublot watches and Luca Cordero di Montezemolo President of Ferrari announced ‘a pooling of resources and information’ that will cover both in terms of brand image and commercial activities.

Jean-Claude Biver and Luca Cordero di Montezemolo

This was announced during the traditional Mugello international circuit near Florence where Ferrari World Finals were winding down the season. Hublot executives are ‘excited to be the exclusive watchmaking partner for all Ferrari activities.’  This merger allows Hublot to hold the title of “Official Watch” and “Official Timekeeper” including partner in all Ferrari special events. It is also worth noting that Ferrari is a leading luxury provider in China, where Hublot currently has 3 boutiques and is planning the opening of 12 more by the end of 2012. Although this union has enabled Hublot to establish their brand with affluent Ferrari aficionados, their clientele are already accustomed to indulgence with the Hublot luxury watch line. And what better indulgence than a Hublot “Baby Million Big Bang” that sports 891 diamonds more than half of which are brilliantly cut bringing it to just under 21 carats of luxury all of which are carefully crafted on its white-gold bracelet, 44mm black dial. This fine self winding chronograph is a nice addition to any wrist behind the wheel of a Ferrari. It is modestly priced at 302k, although you can still opt in for a Hublot “Big Bang” that might be a bit more apropos behind the wheel of your Bugatti.

Hublot also continues to amaze the world with its recent technological breakthroughs when it unveiled its newest creation the “Magic Gold” on December 15th at its factory in Nyon, Switzerland. As anyone will attest, 24k gold is a popular material used on luxury watches with the only drawback being the softness of the metal picking up fine scratches. What makes the “Magic Gold” special is the incorporation of high-tech materials like carbide, enabling it to bind with the gold and make it scratch resistant. Biver also intimated of a “new line” that would incorporate this ‘new material’ to be released by March of next year.

Magic Gold

The certainty with Hublot is its continued desire to be the world’s most respected manufacturer of luxury. Additionally,  China has emerged as a firm competitor on the world markets and millions of Chinese are being exposed to this type of opulence for the first time, solidifying the Hublot brand as the leader of luxury items in the years to come.
